THE HISTORY OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
The University of Central Oklahoma
was first known as the Territorial Normal
School, created by the Oklahoma
Territorial legislature in December 1890
to educate teachers for the one-room
school houses being built across the
growing territory.
Central’s first students met in
Edmond’s First Methodist Church. In
1892, construction began on the school’s
first building, Old North Tower, still
standing today. Over the next century,
more buildings would be added, moved,
torn down or rebuilt. Grass would give

Each of the University of Central
Oklahoma’s five undergraduate colleges
awards a graduating senior the title of
“Class Marshal.” These five students
have the highest grade point averages
and number of Central credit hours in
their respective colleges.
The honorees each receive a Class
Marshal stole, signifying the highest
degree of academic excellence. First presented in 1994, the stoles have become
a UCO tradition, now enhanced by the
bronze Class Marshal graduation gown.

Sarah Tehga De Toy is an
Elementary Education major with a
minor in Leadership and a 4.0 grade
point average in the College of
Education and Professional Studies,
where she was named Outstanding
Undergraduate Student. From Luther,
she has been active in numerous campus organizations, as well as a member
of the Women’s Varsity Rowing Team
2007-09. Other memberships include
Kappa Delta Pi (president 2010-11)
and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies, National Science Teacher
Association, Emerging Leaders
Scholarship Council and Women of
Many Ethnic Nationalities —
W.O.M.E.N. (officer 2008-11).
Recipient of the 2012 DaVinci-Martin
Scholar Award, she was on the
President’s Honor Roll 2007-12,
received the Freshman Standout Award
and has been named in Who’s Who
Among American Students in American
Universities & Colleges. She received
several academic scholarships, including
the Emerging Leaders Scholarship and
Tuition Waiver, 2007-10. She plans to
teach and to pursue a master’s degree in
elementary education with Montessori
certification.
Kelvin Le is a Biomedical
Engineering major with a 4.0 grade
point average in the College of
Mathematics and Science. From
Oklahoma City, he has been president
of the Robotics Club and a member of
the Engineering and Physics Club,
Mortar Board and the National College
Senior Honor Society. He was named a
CURE S-STEM Scholar and received
the Goldwater Scholar Honorable
Mention and the Outstanding
Biomedical Engineering Project honor.
Other recognitions include the
President’s Honor Roll, and the
Engineering and Physics Achievement,
the General Chemistry and the
Multicultural Student Achievement
awards. He recently received a National
Science Foundation fellowship. He
plans to pursue a Ph.D., with graduate
work in electrical engineering.
Katherine M. Rogers is a Vocal
Music Education major with a 3.97
grade point average in the College of
Fine Arts and Design. From Crescent,
she has been a member of the
Cantilena Women’s Choir, the Concert
Chorale, the American Choral
Directors Association and the National
Association for Music Education. She

received the Freshman Achievement
and the Legacy scholarships and was on
the President’s Honor Roll seven semesters, the Dean’s for two. She plans to
pursue a career in vocal music education, hoping to teach in an elementary
or middle school.
Annie Nhi Truong is a
Management Information Systems
major with a 3.97 grade point average
in the College of Business
Administration. From Oklahoma City,
she has been a member of Delta Mu
Delta International, Phi Theta Kappa,
Alpha Chi and the Golden Key
International honor societies. She is a
longtime member of the Vietnamese
Choir at the Cathedral of Our Lady of
Perpetual Help. She was on the
President’s Honor Roll, was a 2012
Milton Bast Award nominee and is a
member of the Association of
Information Technology Professionals.
She plans a career in information technology and to pursue a master’s degree.
Kaylen R. Washbourne is a
Criminal Justice-Police major and
Sociology minor with a 4.0 grade point
average in the College of Liberal Arts.
From Edmond, she has been a member
of Sigma Alpha Lambda national honors society, as well as Eta Tau, UCO’s
chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the
national criminal justice honor society.
She received the Finney Scholarship for
Criminal Justice and multiple tuition
waiver scholarships from the School of
Criminal Justice. She plans to become
an Oklahoma City police officer.
