The Tall Trees Path The hidden treasures of a quiet village This diversified and pleasant path allows to understand the village of Rouairoux identity : a hilly landscape , fields , conifer woods bordered with , chestnut-trees, nice rows of beeches, kitchen-gardens surroundedwith stone walls , small orchards with apple-trees, many streamlets along the slopes, lovely rural hamlets, farm-buildings lost for agriculture but having a new life with city-dwellers . And above all, far from the busy road, in the valley, calm and peaceful. Rouairoux 12 km - 4h Elevation: 400m By the way Rouairoux in Occitan is Roairos, that means :’bois de rouvres’=oak wood. The small village of Rouairoux remained involved with religion. You will be able to see many Crosses and Calvaries all along, which are on the processions ways. One of them ‘loucamis das morts’ (the deads’path), is an indication for the time of the protestant reformation. In Lacabarède, the catholic worship was forbidden, so the catholic inhabitants were buried in Rouairoux. To avoid the protestant garrisons, they used to go far away, cross the river Thoré and carry the dead persons to the church by the deads’path (loucamis das morts). Acces: on the D612, in Lacabarède, take the direction :Anglès/Rouairoux and stop at the carpark next to the ancient station on the right after the bends. Departure: From the car-park , go westwards on the Green Way (la VoieVerte) for 2 kms. After 3 small houses on the left , go under the bridge, just after, turn left and go up a small slope to reach the bridge; go up the wood and follow the grass path. At Puech Fouyé, in front of the wash-house, go on the left, you see houses, leave the road and take the path on the right bordered with stones and hollies. In front of the fence, turn right and go up a steep path for 1 km. Join the crossroad, turn left direction MasRedon ; pass the Calvary and 150m further, turn right on the path bordered with hollies. At the crossroad, go straight on. At the crossing, go straight on; the path goes up gently; walk for 700m. At the crossing, go on the right, the path is shared with cattle; go down gently, cross the stream and go to the road. On the road, go down on the right and straight on. Go through the place ’Cavaillès’, pass the bridge and 25m further, join the village by a small sinuous concrete path on the left. Along the standing stones, straight to the ‘château de Caylus’. Go on the alley to the D52, turn right, 100m further, take the right again on the stone-path; go down this path, pass next to the water-station; 100m further in the turning, go down straight on the path along the field. When the path cross, go down on the left; cross the small road and straight on. In front of the small house 40 on the Green Way ,turn left and join the starting point.
