Installation Instructions for the DS1520 and DS1530 Seismic Vibration Detectors 1.0 General Description The DS1520 and DS1530 are Seismic Vibration Detectors designed to detect break-in attempts to vaults, safes, night deposit boxes, automatic teller machines, and other enforced physical areas. The DS1520 is primarily used for the protection of vaults, safes, cabinets, and walls. The DS1530 is primarily used for the protection of night deposit boxes and automatic teller machines. 2.0 Specifications • Input Power: 9.0 to 15.0 volts DC. Two volts AC maximum ripple peakto-peak. • Standby Power: There is no internal standby battery. The unit should be connected to DC power sources capable of supplying standby power in the event primary power fails. Four hours minimum of standby power is required for U.L. Listed Requirements. • Current Draw: 10.0 mA, maximum. • Alarm Output: Form C relay contact rated at 100.0 mA @ 28.0 volts DC. Transfer on alarm for 1 to 2 seconds. • Tamper: Normally closed tamper switch rated at 100.0 mA @ 28.0 volts DC. • Sensitivity: Five sensitivity levels. • Sabotage Protection: Multi-point tamper sensing system detects removal of cover, removal of detector from its mounting surface, and attempts to burn the detector. • Temperature Range: Operational: -4 to +131° F (-20 to +55° C), (32 to 120° F, 0 to 49° C for U.L. Listed Requirements). Storage: -58 to +158° F (-50 to +70° C). • Relative Humidity: Operational - 90 percent @ 86° F (30° C). 3.0 Accessories 3.0.1 Testing Accessories VS A14: Self contained test transmitter. VS A15: Hand held test transmitter. VS A16: Movable test detector. Detectors, Bells. Human Activity may also be a factor. 4.1 Range The range of the detector is dependent on the sensitivity setting of the detector and on the type of material used in the construction of the vault, safe or ATM. Because the unit is dependent on the vibrations caused by an attack, any gaps or cracks in the material will result in reduced performance of the detector. First, it is necessary to determine the maximum range of the detector, based on the type of material used to construct the vault, safe or ATM, then the number of detectors required for the installation can be determined. Range 4.1.1 Range Guidelines for Vaults The following chart shows the range of the detector as a function of the type of material used in construction of the protected area, the sensitivity setting on the detector and the possible methods of attack. These figures should only be regarded as a guide in planning an installation. The actual range is determined on site with a field test. Range can vary significantly depending on construction material. A detector should also be placed inside or on the vault door. The detectors should be surface or recess mounted, and placed high enough to keep clear of safes, document cabinets, and deposit boxes. Mounting plate for use when mounting to concrete walls. Recess mounting box for use when mounting in concrete walls. Weather resistant mounting box. Steel mounting plate for use when mounting to steel surfaces by welding. VS A5: Floor mounting recess box. Similar to the VS A2. VS A6: Movable mounting kit with day and night position plates. VS A7: Key-hole protection kit. VS A8: 5 mm Spacer kit for use with the key-hole protection kit. VS A9: Armored cable kit. Flexible stainless steel conduit 6.5 feet long (2 meters) and 8 conductor cable. VS A10:Metal junction box, sabotage protected. VS A11:Plastic cable insert for use with square cable conduit. VS A12:Plastic cable insert for use with round cable conduit. VS A13:Plastic cable insert for use with double cable inlet. . It is recommended that a written plan be prepared to define the location of each detector on the vault. This will enable you to determine the amount of detectors needed to give the vault complete coverage. A fold out plan will help in doing this (see the following diagram). Otherwise, use the chart below to determine the maximum detection radius [listed in feet (meters)] which will provide sufficient coverage of the entire unit to be protected. The ranges shown are guidelines only -- it is important that the operation of the detectors be verified by testing after installation. G re f 2 G max 1 3 5 4 G min Sensitivity Setting 1. Mounted fixed, close to the hinge providing a short distance to the junction box. 2. Mounted on the key-hole protection plate to cover the key-hole. In the armed position, the lever will cover the key-hole. Connect the lever contact in series with the alarm output relay. This inhibits the arming of the alarm system if the lever is still in the day position. 3. Mounted with the movable mounting kit. Mount so that the cable prevents opening the door when the detector is in the night position plate. Place the day position plate on a wall next to the opening side of the door, or on a wall close to the safe. The following drawing shows examples of these 3 mounting options. In order to provide maximum protection, the detector must be mounted as closely as possible to a door hinge Detection Range Scr ooge M cDu ck Mounting Option 3 Scr oo ge McD uck 5.1.2 Safe/Document Cabinet Protection: one detector If planning to protect a safe or document cabinet with only one detector, mount the detector between and as close as possible to one of the door hinges (either on the body or door) as shown in the diagram below. It is advisable to add a magnetic contact to the door as well (this is required for a UL Complete Mercantile safe rating). 5.0 Planning the Installation - General Considerations The detection ranges shown in this guide are intended as guidelines for ideal installation conditions. Actual detection range may be affected by situations such as partitions inside the safe and non-continuous surfaces in the safe’s construction. Typically, one detector is used to protect each safe door. It is important to test the installation thoroughly. 5.1 Planning Safe and Cabinet Protection 5.1.1 Safe and Document Cabinets - Multiple Detectors If mounting inside the body, mount a detector on a space which is clear and easily accessible (e.g. the ceiling). Also mount a detector on the inside of a door, close to the hinges. It is advisable to also add a magnetic contact to the door. 5.1.3 Filing Cabinets Normally the lock to the cabinet is located on one side of an upper drawer. If so, mount the detector on the side of the cabinet close to the lock. If high security is required on one drawer in particular, mount the detector on that drawer. Mount the night position plate on the drawer and the day position plate on the side of the cabinet. If mounting outside the body, mount a detector on a wall at the same height as the the detector to be mounted on the door. DS1520/30 Installation Instructions 5.2 Planning Protection of an ATM Unit Mount Detector near access door/panel Displ ay Typically, the door is the only exposed side of the safe used in an ATM unit. When this is the case, an attack is most likely to occur against the door, therefore the detector should be mounted on the door for maximum protection. Otherwise, the protection is planned the same as for a safe. Cash Dispe nse r • Mounting See the following figure for the specific mounting holes to use during each installation. The plate must be mounted so the counter-sunk holes face away from the mounting surface. Soften/quiet the chute and landing surface with rubber insulating material to attenuate the noise created by the falling cash boxes. 6.0 Installation 6.0.1 The Detector - Location of Major Items The DS1520/DS1530 consists of a cast aluminum housing, with outside dimensions of 3 x 3 3/4 x 1 inch (w, h, d) (8 cm x 10 cm x 3 cm), and a weight of 10.2 ounces. Removing the cover screws (2) and the cover from the base plate gives access to the connection terminals, sensitivity adjustment control, and the main mounting holes as shown in the following drawing below. A = Holes for mounting the detector B = Hole for mounting the plate to the concrete expansion plug C = Hole for marking the mounting hole for the VS A14, if used. After the plate is mounted to the surface, rotate the plate 180°, and using the “C” hole, locate the spot for drilling the hole. Reposition the plate after marking the spot. Define the location for the VS A1. - Mark the location for the Plate's expansion plug. - Using a 1/2 inch (12mm) drill bit, drill out the hole for the expansion plug. - Drill the hole at least 2 1/4 inches (6cm) deep. If the surface finish is thicker than 1/2 inch (12mm), drill the hole deeper. - At least 2 inches (5cm) of the expansion plug should be in the concrete. Longer bolts may be needed. - Place the expansion plug into the concrete. - Make sure the top end of the plug does not stick out of the concrete. - Bolt the mounting plate into place. Do not completely tighten yet. - If used, mark the location for the Tester's expansion plug (lower right cut-out of the mounting plate). Note: Make sure that when the Tester is mounted, it will not be in contact with the mounting plate. If the surface finish is thicker than 1/2 inch (12mm), drill the hole deeper. - At least 2 inches (5cm) of the expansion plug should be in the concrete. Longer bolts may be needed. - Place the expansion plug into the concrete. - Make sure the top end of the plug does not stick out of the concrete. - Bolt the Tester into place. Make sure it does not come in contact with the mounting plate. 6.04 Mounting the DS1520/DS1530 Directly onto Steel In some installations it is recommended that the detector be mounted directly onto the steel surface. 6.02 Tools Required The following tools will be needed during the installation: • The VS A1 Mounting Plate (also can be used for the drilling pattern). • A power drill (with a hammer facility for concrete or brick). • A high speed steel drill bit, # 29 (for 8/32 tap) [(3.3mm for M4 wire tap)]. • A high speed steel drill bit, 1/2 inch (12mm). • A concrete drill bit, 1/2 inch (12mm) (for the expansion plugs). • An 8/32 tap (M4 wire tap) (to mount the VS A1 mounting base to steel surfaces). • Oil to cool the drill and wire tap during steel mountings. 6.03 VS A1 Mounting Plate The VS A1 is a Mounting Plate that can be used to mount the DS1520 and DS1530 onto steel or concrete surfaces. Whenever the detector is to be mounted on concrete, the VS A1 must be used. You will have to drill and tap the mounting holes. • Define the exact location of the detector. • Use the detector as a template and mark the location of the three holes to be drilled. - These are the holes that will hold the DS1520/DS1530 to the steel surface. Page 3 • Drill out these three holes with a # 29 drill bit in a high speed drill. - Drill the holes at least 1/4 inch deep. • Thread these three holes with a 8/32 tap. - Use a little oil to lubricate the tap while threading the hole. - After threading the holes, use a 1/2 inch drill bit in a high speed drill to smooth the surface around the holes and to remove burrs. • Mount the detector to the surface using the three 8/32 screws provided. • If a VS A14 Test Transmitter is to be used, it may be installed in the detector’s right-hand bottom corner at this time. 6.1 • Mounting: - See the diagrams below. Indirect Mounting of the DS1520/DS1530 to Steel In some installations, indirect mounting of the detector is recommended: Night Plate Pin Day Plate Mount the Night and Day plates to the mounting surface with the bolts provided. • Use the VS A4 mounting plate when welding to steel. • Use the VS A6 for Day/Night applications. • Use the VS A7 when keyhole protection is required. G max 1 5 6.1.1 Indirect Mounting to Steel Using the VS A4 • Clean the mounting area of any paint or other surface finish. • Place the VS A4 on the mounting surface. - Make sure it can not move during the welding process. • Weld the VS A4 to the mounting surface. - First weld points A, B, C, and D (see the following figure). • Next weld the areas marked E and F (see the following figure). B E F C Gr ef 2 D Welding Points • Mount the DS1520/DS1530 to the VS A4 using the three screws provided. - Define the location of the Night position plate (Night position plate has the small pin in the lower right-hand corner). - Mark the three mounting holes. Prepare to drill and tap the holes. - Drill out these three holes with a # 29 (3.3mm) drill bit in a high speed drill. Drill the holes at least 1/4 inch (7mm) deep. - Thread these three holes with a 8/32 (M4) tap. Use a little oil to lubricate the tap while going through the hole. After threading the holes, use a 1/2 inch (12mm) drill bit or countersink in a high speed drill to smooth the surface around the holes and to remove burrs. - Mount the Night plate with the three bolts provided. - Define the location of the Day position plate. Use the three screws and anchors provided. - Mount the detector to the moveable mounting plate. 6.1.2 Using the VS A6 Moveable Mounting Kit The VS A6 is designed to enable Day and Night mounting locations for the DS1520/DS1530 on vault, safe, and cabinet doors. In the Day position, the tamper switch is open, preventing the system from being armed. In the Night position, the detector is fully functional. 6.1.3 Using the VS A7 Keyhole Protection Kit The kit includes the following: - A magnetized mounting plate, to adhere to two smaller plates. - The two smaller plates. These two plates are called the Day (unarmed position) and Night (armed) plates. The magnet ensures an efficient signal transmission between the Night plate and the detector. • The cable for the installation should be wired through the VS A10 Junction Box. • Mount the Junction Box and Day plate together on the side of the safe/ vault or a nearby wall so that cable will prevent the safe/vault door from opening when the detector is moved to the Night plate. • Mount the Night plate near the keyhole or dial of the door. - Be careful when drilling into safe/vault doors. Some doors may have printed circuit boards pre-installed behind the outer steel plate for drill protection. - Mounting the Night plate: remove paint or other surface finish on the mounting surface to guarantee proper connection. • The Moveable Mounting Plate contains a reed switch and a microswitch. Both determine whether or not the detector is properly in place. - Wire these switches in series with the alarm relay of the detector. - Only when the detector is on the Night position plate, and the alarm relay is not in alarm, will it be possible to arm. • Mounting Page 4 The VS A7 is designed to cover the keyhole with a hardened steel lever when in the Night (armed) position. This will stop an intruder from using plasticine explosives on the keyhole. DS1520/30 Installation Instructions - Define the location of the VS A7 on the mounting surface. - Remove irregularities on the mounting surface to guarantee proper connection. - Mark the mounting holes “B”. Prepare to drill and tap the holes. - Drill out these three holes with a # 29 (3.3mm) drill bit in a high speed drill. Drill the holes at least 1/4 inch (7mm) deep. - Thread these three holes with a 8/32 (M4) tap. Use a little oil to lubricate the tap while going through the hole. After threading the holes, use a 1/2 inch (12mm) drill bit or countersink in a high speed drill to smooth the surface around the holes and to remove burrs. - Mount the VS A7's backplate to the mounting surface. - If more space is needed to get the steel lever over the keyhole, VS A8 spacer plates may be used. - When done, always mechanically test the proper function of the release lever, the keyhole protection lever, and the microswitch. To make the box weather resistant: • Apply silicone insulation to all joints, mounting hardware, and holes. • After the detector and box have been mounted and tested, apply silicone insulation around the edges of the box lid and cover before and after it has been secured. 6.1.6 Using a VS A5 Floor Box The VS A5 is designed to recess mount the detector in vault floors. It may be used as a casting mold in new vault constructions. It may also be used in existing vaults after cutting a hole in the vault floor. The VS A5 features a heavy duty lid (1/5 inch thick) to accommodate heavy loads that may exist inside bank vaults. The cable conduit inlets are rubber sealed to prevent water intrusion. 6.1.4 Recess Mounting with the VS A2 The VS A2 is designed to recess mount the detector in concrete walls. Preferably, the recess box should be molded into the wall during construction of the vault. • Define exactly where the locations of the detectors will need to be (do not forget floors and ceilings). - Make arrangements with the construction crew to be on-site when they put up the concrete casting shutters (wooden panels). - At the predetermined mounting sites, drill two holes in the wooden panels. - Mount the recess box to the wooden panels using the two threaded rods provided for each installation. - Fasten the bracket in the tapered hole in the back of the mounting box. Weld Brackets to reinforcement bars To ensure proper detection, weld the VS A5 to the reinforcement bars within the concrete. This is done by mounting the L-shaped flat iron rod to the bottom of the mounting box, then welding this piece to the reinforcement rods. Weld r ods to reinforcem ent b ars 5.1.7 Using the VS A9 Armored Cable Kit The VS A9 is designed to be used as a protective transfer of cable from the door of a safe/vault to its body or an adjacent wall. It should be used together with the VS A10 Junction Box. - Weld the bracket to the reinforcement rods for the concrete. - Run conduit to the holes on the sides of the mounting box. - Attach the conduit to the reinforcement rods. This will prevent them from shifting or falling out during pouring of the concrete. - Seal the holes around the conduit and any hole not being used. This will prevent concrete from running into the box. - After the concrete has been poured and VS A2 recess box is accessible again, mount the detector on a VS A1 mounting plate, then mount the assembly inside the box. The VS A3 is a box designed to protect the detector from damage and excess humidity. This will protect the cable from the sharp edges. 6.1.5 Surface Mounting with the VS A3 A The kit includes the following: P lace rubber gasket between the box and the cover • The steel cable strain reliefs are used to secure the conduit within the detector (replace the plastic strain relief on the detector with the steel one). • The plastic cable entries fit in the cover of the detector. The two holes are made to fit the stainless steel conduit. A third knockout is available if needed. 5.1.8 Using the VS A10 Junction Box The VS A10 is a tamper resistant Junction Box. It has a hardened steel insert within the cover to protect it from drilling; it has a sabotage contact to protect it from being opened or removed from its mounting surface. Page 5 • Wiring • Mounting - Remove the cover. - Remove the PC board. - Mount the backplate to the desired location. - Replace the PC board. - Route the wiring to the PC board. - Secure the wire to the VS A10 with a tie-wrap. - Wire the system as necessary. - Test the system for proper functionality. - Replace the cover. Ground VS A10 Tamper Loop Alarm Loop Test P ower + 5.1.9 Using the Cable Inlets The detector is shipped with a cable inlet designed to accept only one cable. This cable inlet is designed to accept square conduit. To use this, the detector must be mounted on a VS A1 mounting plate. • The VS A12. This cable inlet is designed to accept round conduit. The diameter of the opening is 3/4 of an inch for use with 1/2 inch EMT. Ta mp er - + VS A14 - If using an end of line resistor (EOL), use terminal 6 of the detector to put the resistor in-series with the alarm relay. - To put both of the Movable Mounting Plate's switches in-series, connect the wire from the microswitch to terminal 4 of the detector. - Connect the alarm loop from the Junction Box to the center terminal of the VS A6 and to terminal six of the detector (if not using an EOL, connect it directly to terminal five). 6.0.3 Wiring the VS A7 Keyhole Protection Kit The Keyhole Protection Mounting Plate contains a microswitch that supervises the position of the lever. . • The VS A13. This cable inlet is designed to accept two flexible stainless steel conduits. It also provides a knockout for a third cable. The alarm loop should be wired in-series with the microswitch. When the lever covers the keyhole, the microswitch is closed and the system can be armed. 6.0 Wiring If using an EOL, wire it to terminal six of the detector to connect it in-series with the alarm relay and the microswitch. 6.0.1 Wiring the Detectors Bring the cable(s) to the detector. Feed them through the cable inlet and cut them leaving 4 inches of cable after the strain relief. Wire the terminals according to the following diagram. Fold the excess wire inside the wiring area of the detector. It includes a microswitch and a reed switch. They both are supervising whether the detector is in the Day or Night position. The alarm loop should be connected in-series with both VS A6 switches so that the system can not be armed if the detector is in the Day position. Power 1 + 2- DS1520 DS1530 When using the VS A14 Test Transmitter, the terminal block of the Movable Mounting Plate may be used to power the Test Transmitter. L ED Al arm 3 4 5 6 Tampe r 7 8 EOL - + VS A14 DS1520/30 Installation Instructions 7.0 Testing the Installation Grou nd 7.0.1 Manual Tests Check each installation for proper mounting and wiring.Apply power to the detectors and connect an ohm-meter to terminals 4 and 5 of each detector to ensure a closed alarm loop. Perform the following tests: • Scratch the protected surface directly around each detector with a screwdriver. Depending on the strength of the signal you generate, it may take 20 to 45 seconds to generate an alarm. This test simulates an attack with a drill or diamond disk. • Strike firmly with a hammer on the protected surface directly around each detector. Wait two seconds between strikes. After five strikes, the DS1520 will alarm. To protect the surface from damage, use a small aluminum plate between the hammer and the surface. This test simulates an attack with a hammer and chisel or hydraulic jack. This test is only valid for the DS1520. • Give one powerful blow to the protected surface directly around each detector. The detector will alarm immediately. This test simulates an attack with explosives. • Check the background signal level of the detector. This will aid in determining what + ambient noise may cause nuisance alarms. Connect a DC volt-meter to terminal 2 and the test point of the detector. Put the meter in the 3 or 10 volt range. Make sure all possible causes for ambient noise/vibrations are present and operating. This testing accessory is required for all installations. This test must be performed at all installations. 8 Preferably, the source of ambient noise should be removed first. If this is unsuccessful, then the range should be reduced. The VS A15 may be used with the DS1520 and DS1530 detectors or it can be used with the VS A16 Movable Test Unit. • Testing Procedure - Hold the VS A15 to the protected surface. - Start the testing at the end of the protection radius. - Press the red button on the VS A15 to activate the alarm causing oscillations (remember to hold the tester firmly against the protected surface). - An alarm should occur within 45 seconds. - If an alarm does not occur, move the VS A15 closer to the detector or test unit. - If an alarm does not occur at all, even while holding the VS A15 right next to the detector or test unit, check the system wiring. 8.3 The VS A16 Movable Test Unit • Replace the covers on the detectors. Check for a closed-loop condition on the tamper loop. • Connect the alarm and tamper loops to the control panel of the security system. Perform a functional test of both the alarm and tamper signals according the the panel specifications. The Movable Test Unit allows you to test the detector's range (range is equal to a G ref setting) in conjunction with the VS A15 Hand Held Test Transmitter. Make sure both units contain fully charged batteries. The VS A16 is for use on steel or metal surfaces only. 8.0 The Test System The VS A16 mounts to the protected surface with a magnet in its base. 8.1 The VS A14 Test Transmitter This remote test system allows you to test the detectors by activating the VS A14 Self-contained Test Transmitter. The Test Transmitter is mounted inside the detector. It is activated by supplying it with 12 volts. Upon activation, it will transmit signals that will alarm the detector. • Mount the test transmitter inside the detector. Make sure it does not touch the detector or mounting plate. • The Test Transmitter has only two wires. A Red (+) lead and a Black (-) lead. - Refer to the following wiring example for installations with a Junction Box. - Refer to the examples on the previous pages for other wiring options. DS1520/30 Installation Instructions • Testing Procedure VS A16 - Place the VS A16 onto the Movable Test Uni t protected surface where the real detector would go and turn it on. The LED will come on steady. - Activate the VS A15 Hand Held Tester at the end of the protection radius. - The LED on the VS A16 will turn off within 45-60 seconds to simulate an alarm. - If an alarm is not indicated, move either the Test Unit or the Test Transmitter until optimum coverage is verified.
