Zulu is a high yielding soft biscuit winter wheat that was added to the AHDB RL in 2014. It is robust with good allround agronomic attributes and good grain quality, delivering what growers and end users require from a biscuit
variety. It is suited to a range of markets; including distilling, making Zulu ideal for growing in northern parts of
the UK and Scotland.

Limagrain believe Zulu has greater yield potential
than the AHDB RL suggests. This has been shown in
external trials and more importantly, on-farm. The
trials data shown (Graph and Table), is from a BASF
trial at Rawcliffe Bridge, Yorkshire, comparing yields
between untreated and two fungicide programmes,
of differing cost, over a range of varieties.

Rawcliffe Bridge is a very high yielding site and the data suggests that Zulu is able to compete, not only in the
biscuit sector, but also against soft and hard feed wheats.

Revelation
Zulu’s agronomic characteristics make
it an ideal variety for growing in the
northern part of the UK. Limagrain
have carried out yield trials in Scotland
for many years, to ensure varieties
have the agronomic characteristics
required for this harsher environment.
The graph (left) shows Zulu compared
against the main commercial varieties
in the north, with a more typical farm
fungicide programme.
Feb 2017. Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2017/18. On the 1-9 scales, high figures indicate that a
variety shows the character to a high degree.

Zulu has good disease resistance with good ratings for both mildew and Septoria tritici – two diseases that are
considered of high importance in the north. Yellow and brown rust levels will require monitoring and a full,
protective fungicide programme implemented, in order to ensure the full yield potential of the variety.

Zulu offers good all-round agronomics with the characteristics of high tillering and a more prostrate growth habit,
suggesting its suitability for the earlier drilling date required by the northern regions. Zulu has more rapid spring
development than some other varieties – similar to Horatio.
Zulu is a taller strawed variety with good lodging resistance. Limagrain suggests growers use a split PGR programme
to ensure good standing ability, especially in high yield situations and northern regions, where good standing is
vital to ensure an easy and earlier harvest.
Limagrain believe Zulu is earlier to mature than the AHDB RL data suggests; a valuable trait that has been noted by
both the trade and growers, especially in northern areas of the UK. Zulu has a lower vernalisation requirement –
similar to Claire, so is suitable for drilling up to the end of February, offering growers’ flexibility of the drilling period.
Zulu has resistance for OWBM and SBCMV. Although distribution of SBCMV is low in the UK, prevalence would
appear to be increasing and variety resistance is essential for growers in the regions affected.
