. Grossnickle Church of the Brethren November 2015 LOVE FEAST AND COMMUNION Let us begin now to prepare for Love Feast, which will be observed Sunday evening, November 8 at 6:00 pm in the Parish Hall. We can begin by opening our hearts to the Lord, by seeking forgiveness from God and others, and by inviting others to share in the wonderful blessings that come from being obedient to Jesus’ commands and accepting His invitation to the Table. The evening will start with a time of reflection and repentance. Then we will follow the example of Jesus by washing one another’s feet. As an option, we also offer a hand-washing table. And, we share a simple meal of beef and broth and bread (with a vegetarian option available also). The service concludes with the celebration of Bread and Cup communion. Child care will be available for the youngest of our church family, and interested children of any age are welcome to come and participate in the meal and observe the feetwashing and communion. If you need a ride to Love Feast, please call the Deacons of the Month, Wayne and Karen Grossnickle, 301-293-2293. Our church practices open communion, so baptized Christians of any tradition are welcome to join us and participate fully, regardless of where you hold your church membership. “… Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19) FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP The Deacons invite you and your family to a Fellowship Meal/Nite Out at the Barbara Fritchie restaurant on Rt. 40 in Frederick at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 14. This is a new event and we hope many of our new members and guests, as well as our “usual” church family members will attend. The evening will provide a time of fellowship and getting to know one another better. We are planning to do a couple “get to know each other better” activities, but for the most part it will be an evening of eating and fellowship. Children are welcome; a children's table with goodie bags is being planned, however FREE babysitting will also be available at the Church as well. The cost for the meal will be $14.95 per adult plus tax and tip, which includes your choice of 1 of 3 meat options, sides, a salad and a dessert. A vegetarian option and a children’s menu will be available. A sign-up sheet is located in the Narthex, or you may contact Cathie Clemson at 301-293-3637 and let her know you would like to attend. A head count is needed by Sunday, November 1. We are looking forward to this event and hope that MANY will come. The Dunker, November 2015 Page 2 CELEBRATION CORNER Celebration Corner is a monthly column highlighting, with joy, events of the past month. This month we celebrate October events. John 12:26 says, “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.” We seek to ground our service in our discipleship. We serve because we follow Jesus who served so many in so many ways. October has been a busy month of serving in Jesus’ name. Though it happened in late September we want to celebrate the dedication, hard work and commitment of the Disaster Response Team that served in Loveland, Colorado the last week of September. Much was accomplished to beautiful songs of gratitude in response. Help offered to those who cannot afford it and who have been so devastated by flood, is help offered generously and in the Spirit of Christ. Diane Moser shares a personal statement – “Thank you to all of the people at Grossnickle who support the Brethren Disaster Ministries. It was a very meaningful experience for me this year and I am so glad I was able to go. Our group was divided up into 3 teams and were assigned to different houses. The project that I worked on was a log house that was being built by a couple who had been burned out of their mobile home in 2012 from forest fires and then flooded out a year later from severe flooding caused by a long period of rain. In addition, they operate an excavation and logging business on their property and lost all of the logs for four log houses in the fire and lost their house, more logs and some excavating equipment in the flood. Because they lived in a double-wide house trailer they did not have any insurance so they have had very little economic assistance. In addition to other adversities, they had a bad experience with some earlier volunteer groups. So they were reluctant to give BDM a chance to help them. On our first day we got quite a lot done chinking (caulking the logs) and laying tile. When we came back the next day the wife told us that they had sat in the house the night before and prayed to God to thank him for answering their earlier prayer that he would send them some good people to help them finish building their house. They were so very happy. We worked that day and when we came back the next morning they told us jokingly that they felt like they wanted to lock the doors at the end of the week and not let us go home. Each morning she would stop by and tell us that her and her husband sat in the house after we left each night and thanked God with such full hearts for the work that we had been able to do for them. Our group really felt God's call to help this couple because they had been through so much and their love of God was so very strong. They have been on my mind since I have returned and I have been asking God how we can continue to help them. I would like to ask you to pray for them and possibly send them some cards to help them keep their spirits up.” (The mailing address is posted on the hallway bulletin board.) “Field of Hope” Growing Project also held its annual Harvest Celebration Festival during the month. This year is the 10th anniversary of the project. It is also Foods Resource Bank (FRB)’s 15th anniversary. FRB is celebrating help given to 1,000,000 people across the 15 years and has established the goal of helping the next million folks in half that time, the next 8 years. The commitment and dedication of folks in 9 different Churches including our own, makes this project possible. October has also been a month of several treasured moments in worship. The first Sunday of the month we shared in World Communion Sunday, breaking bread and sharing the cup with Christians all over the world. Moving through the aisles to receive the bread and cup always reminds us of the relationships we so cherish in the faith, brother and sister, and our relationship to our loving God. Also in October the Senior High Youth lead us in worship. We are always grateful for the leadership of youth in worship, for creativity, willingness, and dedication expressed through this annual experience. And we are grateful our Church offers that opportunity to young folks to experience leading others in worship, being in front of people, speaking in public. Thanks so much to advisors Elvin Stottlemyer and Cathie Clemson for guiding and mentoring in this task. The Dunker, November 2015 Page 4 ‘HELPING HANDS’ Financial Folks This segment focuses on the many groups in the life of the Church who contribute a great deal to our life together. This space is an opportunity to learn more about these groups and a chance to see who participates in them. This month we feature the ‘helping hands’ of our Financial Folks. This month we highlight the dedicated work of three wonderfully willing folks who carry out the many and varied details of our financial life. Charles Delauter (photo not available) serves as our Treasurer and has for many, many years. Jeff Hurwitz serves as Financial Secretary picking up those responsibilities two years ago from Ray Hinkle. And, Trina Delauter serves as the Financial Administrator. Jeff handles the income side of the equation for our Church family. He cares for making deposits, tracking offerings, and carrying those heavy bags of change to the bank on the first Sunday of the month (when we give our “My 2¢ for Hunger” offerings). Jeff reports to the Finance Commission and the Church Board as well as the annual Church Business Meeting. Usually after the service on Sunday morning Jeff can be found in the “Old Kitchen” working with the commission to count the morning offering and see that it is deposited at the bank. We’re deeply grateful to Jeff for the dedicated hours it takes to do the work of Financial Secretary and for the faithful reporting that he does. He truly lends helping hands to our life together. Charles and Trina care for the expense side of our financial life together. Writing payroll checks, paying bills, completing extensive monthly reporting to the Church Board, accounting for the many special funds that exist and tracking special offerings are only a few of the things Charles and Trina do on behalf of all of us. Caring for our financial life is no small commitment and it requires many hours of dedicated service as bills come due monthly, individuals await reimbursement, and employees count on payroll checks. Assisting the Finance Commission and the Church Board with good information requires a reliable system of tracking expenses and regular comparison of those needs with income. Truly without the helping hands of these financial officers and staff, we would be at a loss. Please, when you have opportunity, extend your thanks to these willing servants who so regularly and faithfully assist us all through their steadfast efforts. KIDS KLUB BEGINS IN NOVEMBER KIDS KLUB, for children in Grades K through 5, will kick-off soon. The 2015-16 session begins Wednesday, November 4. Lois Ann Glessner will again direct this program by presenting exciting Bible lessons designed to help the children learn about God and the life of Jesus Christ. She supplements the lessons with fun-filled activities to illustrate the stories. The group meets weekly on Wednesday evenings in the Parish Hall from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Snacks are provided by parents according to a pre-arranged schedule. The Dunker, November 2015 Page 5 FINANCIAL UPDATE - 2015 As everyone is aware, the current economy is impacting everyone at many levels and this includes Grossnickle COB. We are extremely appreciative of everyone continuing to support the church and its many activities, and we are very fortunate to have such an outstanding congregation! Through the first eight months of 2015, we are currently behind our budget by approximately $24,000. This deficit is about 10 percent more than at this time last year. All commissions are working to keep expenditures as low as possible and we have been successful reducing in many areas. However, the budgeted giving continues to be behind. The Finance commission is in process of finalizing our 2016 budget and we want to continue to offer the same quality service to all church activities. We all recognize these are tough economic times and the church appreciates the great support our members continue to give to all of our regular and special projects. We certainly will appreciate any extra effort that can be made through the remaining year. Thank you and God bless! T.J. Houck, Finance Chair CONGREGATIONAL BUSINESS MEETING Our Annual Congregational Business Meeting will be held Thursday evening, November 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Lester Boleyn will serve as moderator. The items of business will be to approve the slate of officers and to adopt a budget for 2016. These items will determine our priorities for ministry in the coming year. All members of the congregation have a voice in this meeting. We hope for good attendance and good discussion. Another task of the Congregational Business Meeting is to call Deacons. Deacons serve as caregivers of our congregation and as those who prepare for communion and baptism. Please consider individuals or couples who could serve faithfully and well as deacons. We will be calling four deacon couples. Those persons whose terms are expiring this year are: Gene and Marilyn Gaver, Marion and Sharon Leatherman, Jeff and Patty Hurwitz, Randy and Kathy Gaver. All are eligible to be called again. We thank them for their faithful service! SENIOR HIGH HUNGER MEAL Invite your family and friends – all are welcome – to the Senior High Hunger Meal after church on Food Pantry Sunday, November 22, 2015. The meal in the Parish Hall will consist of soup and sandwiches. Attendees are invited to provide cake for dessert, and to donate the money they would have spent on a regular meal to help families in need in our communities. All proceeds will be used to benefit needy families at Christmas. For details, please speak with Elvin Stottlemyer, 301-293-2830. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause! However, by the time the Giving Tree is displayed, the gift items will be listed on the tree’s tags. (When you take a tag remember to sign your name on the sheet next to the corresponding tag number.) You may also have the option of providing a monetary donation. Please make your check payable to “Grossnickle COB” and note “for Giving Tree.” A donations box will be in the hallway, or you may give the card or check directly to Pepper Delauter. Please watch November bulletin announcements and the December issue of The Dunker for when cards and donations will be due to Pepper. “People Helping People” appreciates your continued generous assistance in helping the economically challenged families of our local area enjoy a merry Christmas!
