Class Overview: This course is one semester of a full-year required social studies unit in United
States history. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of US history from the end of the
Civil War (1865) until the Stock Market Crash of 1929.
Course Standards: course requirements are determined by Social Studies curriculum of the
Hazelwood School District and the Missouri state Course Level Expectations (CLE’s). For
Missouri High School Social Studies CLE’s visit:
http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/curriculum/GLE/documents/cur-ss-cle-0907.pdf
Units: The following large topics will be covered during the semester:
 (1) Sectionalism & Reconstruction (pre-Civil War to 1877)
 (2) Industry & The West (late 1800’s-early 1900’s)
 (3) Immigration & the Progressive Movement (late 1800’s-1920)
 (4) Imperialism & World War I (late 1800’s-1920)
 (5) The Roaring Twenties (1920-1929)
Themes of History: Throughout the year, the following key themes of history will be a focal
point. These themes are a focus of the course CLE’s and curriculum:
 Increase in size and power of the national government of the United States
 Increase in immigration and diversity of American culture
 Changes in civil rights and rights protections
 Increase in political access and participation
 Increase in the economic, military, and political power of the United States
Textbooks:
(1) History Alive: The United States (in-class; available for check out upon parent request)
(2) Primary and secondary sources to be handed out by teacher
Class Expectations: These are listed in the classroom. As high school students, members of this
class will be expected to exhibit responsibility and common sense. In general, always bring all
needed supplies to class, follow all directions, and keep profanity and rude behavior OUT of our
classroom. Also important to note is that all school expectations outlined in the student code
of conduct booklet will be strictly enforced in this classroom as required by HSD.
Supplies: Students will be responsible for bringing a pen or pencil and class binder w/ paper to
class every day unless told otherwise by the teacher. Textbooks are used in-class and available at
home upon parental request; however, they are not necessary for class completion as all need
materials will be provided by teacher.
Class Binder: students are required to purchase and bring a 1 inch standard 3-ring binder to class
by the end of the first week of class. This will be used for class PowerPoint handouts, class warm
up activities, and blank notebook paper for class activities (to be provided by student). This will
be checked after 2 class periods for a homework grade. The binder will be required in class as
part of a classroom expectation each day. Failure to comply will result in a referral notice, along
with contributing to low grade/test preparation.
Grading Policies: This class will follow Hazelwood Central’s grading policy: Learning
Activities (homework and class activities) will make up 30% of the grade, and Performance
Evaluation (tests, exams, projects) will make up 70% of the final grade.
-Late work policy: we will follow the “late work” school policies outlined in the student
information handout from the first week of school. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Warm ups: students are required and expected to complete daily warm up activities as soon as
class begins. These daily warm ups will be formative assessments to check for prior
understanding and comprehension, and will focus upon specific learning targets for each unit.
Classwork/Homework: Students will be expected to build towards their class goals of learning
partly through the completion of regular classwork and/or homework. Grading policy and late
work policy is above. Homework will consist of the Unit Review Guide (assigned at the
beginning of each unit and available in electronic format on Student/Parent Portal).
Exams/Tests: During the duration of the semester, there will be 4 unit exams, plus the semester
comprehensive final exam. These tests include challenging multiple choice questions that are
designed to prepare students for the types of social studies testing they will later experience on
the Government (11th grade) state End of Course exam.
Academic Honesty: any student found to be cheating, copying, etc. on an assignment that is
NOT A GROUP ACTIVITY will receive a “zero” grade for the assignment. Anyone caught
plagiarizing other’s work will receive the same discipline. It is important to note that NOT
CITING SOURCES for a research paper or essay is considered plagiarism, even if the assignment
is for “extra credit”.
Letter to the Parents
August 10th/11th, 2016
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
Let me welcome you and your child to our “United States History” class, and to Hazelwood Central High
School for your freshmen year! This class is designed to instill a love of learning and American history
that can last a lifetime. Materials, projects and tests will be BOTH challenging and ultimately rewarding.
We are proud of our Hawks and their achievements and believe that they are capable of amazing things.
Our course topics include the political and social history of the United States from the time period
immediately after the American Civil War (1865) until the end of the “Roaring ‘20’s” and the Stock Market
Crash (1929). Please ask to see your child’s course syllabus/outline and please review this with them. I
hope that you and your child will find this semester exciting and a good learning experience at the same
time. This is my first contact with you, and please note that your child will be expected to return this letter
signed by both themselves and you by Tuesday 8/16 (A-day students) or Wednesday 8/17 (B-day
students) for a homework credit (feel free to copy this syllabus and letter for yourself, as well). Please
note that this is also when the 1-inch class binder is due for a class check as well. Your signature and
your child’s is simply your acknowledgement that you have both read the class syllabus and understand all
class expectations and guidelines for the semester. PLEASE, feel absolutely free to contact me anytime for
any concerns (or just comments, too). My voicemail number is 953-7135, and my email is
[email protected]. Here’s to a great first semester!
