Discover SCUBA - Cape Fear Community College

Summer Camp at Cape Fear Community College
Embark on a Voyage of Discovery
SCUBA diving is a “life-sport” that someone can learn,
develop and enjoy throughout a lifetime. It is a great
opportunity to stay active, explore nature and meet new
friends. If your child has an affinity for the ocean, don’t
hesitate to find out if SCUBA is right for them!
Diving with SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing
Apparatus) equipment takes some getting used to, but
participants quickly realize how easy it is. The biggest
challenge most instructors have with the “Discover SCUBA”
program is coaxing children out of the water at the end of
the day!
“Discover SCUBA” is designed to provide a safe and fun
training program for children interested in what lies
beneath the ocean. This pool-based camp is the perfect
introduction for children to start their diving adventures.
Certified SCUBA instructors will introduce participants to
the basics of diving and snorkeling in a program designed
just for children. Each day is full of fun and engaging
activities that teach about the underwater world, diving
science, SCUBA equipment and water safety. At the end of
the week, campers will participate in an underwater
obstacle course using the skills they learned.
You should assess your child’s maturity, attention span,
reasoning skills and swimming ability before you register. If
you have questions about your child’s ability to participate
in this camp, please call the instructor at 910-465-1902.

Camp Curriculum
Snack Break
The certified instructors will cover one subject per day
(SCUBA equipment and its function, Archimedes
Principle, Boyle’s Law and Charles Law). Campers will
learn at least one new skin-diving skill each day, as well
as SCUBA diving skills (giant stride entry, underwater
hand signals, mask clear, regulator remove & replace
and proper buoyancy). In addition, campers will learn a
new SCUBA search pattern each day (circular pattern,
parallel pattern, expanding square pattern and jack stay
pattern). Campers will participate in daily land drills and
will complete an underwater obstacle course at the end
of the week.
Please pack a daily snack and drink(s)
for your child. Campers will not have
access to a refrigerator or microwave;
please pack any perishables on ice. You
must notify us at the time of registration
if there are known food allergies,
intolerances or health issues of which
camp staff should be aware.
Supply List
We will provide SCUBA equipment (includes buoyancy
control device (BCD), regulator, tank, weight and
wetsuit), but campers must bring the following items:
 Mask, snorkel and fins
 Swimsuit and beach towel
 Waterproof sunscreen
 Snacks and drinks (see right, above)
If you would like to rent a mask, snorkel and fins for $40,
please call lead instructor Inman Campbell at
910-465-1902.
Equipment & Safety Requirements
Safety is our priority. We will have at least two certified
SCUBA instructors supervising at all times and we will
not have more than ten campers at a time. Campers
must be comfortable going under water, and must be
able to swim at least 15 yards and float for one minute.
Under direction from one of our certified SCUBA
instructors, children will use a supplied air system that is
a SCUBA unit with a tank and regulator, and allows them
to float on the surface. The “BCD” (buoyancy control
device) is like a life jacket, which will keep them afloat
until the SCUBA instructor deflates their system and
descends with them at a max depth of 5 feet. Upon
returning to the surface, the BCD will be inflated and will
provide a safe and comfortable snorkel system.
