A History of Pizza
Pizza is one of the world’s most recognisable and loved foods, and has
become an icon of Italy over the ages.
Originally eaten as a plain flatbread, it was considered peasant food
because it was cheap to make, tasty and filling. For these reasons,
pizza became popular in Italy in the early 18th Century.
In the late 1800’s, Queen Margherita and her husband took a tour of
their Italian Kingdom. During her travels, Queen Margherita saw many
people eating the large flatbread, and being curious, she ordered her
guards to bring her one of these “Pizza breads”. She enjoyed it so
much, she started eating it every time she was out amongst the
people. This caused some worry within the Court.
Nevertheless, the Queen loved the bread, and took matters into her
own hands by summoning her Chef. She ordered him to make her a
whole variety of Pizzas for her enjoyment.
To honour the Queen, her Chef decided to make a special Pizza
especially for her – It was topped with tomatoes, Mozzarella cheese
and fresh basil (red, white and green to represent the colours of the
Italian flag).
This became Queen Margherita’s favourite food, which gained rapid
popularity throughout all the regions of Italy, and is still made today.
The Marinara Pizza is one of the most wellknown pizza and has a
topping of tomato, oregano, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. It is
named Marinara, not because it has seafood on it, but because it was
prepared for the fishermen by their wives when they returned from
fishing trips in the Bay of Naples.
