2B SOUTH LYON HERALD-Thursday, March 9, 2006 HOOPS: Season ends for Lions Continued from Front Page Photo by GREG SADLER A South Lyon swimmer competes in the 100 butterfly at last weekend’s Ann Arbor Huron River Rat Invitational. Two relay teams and one individual are heading to this weekend’s state finals. Lion swimmers heading to state finals By John Mueller SPORTS WRITER In a last-chance burst of determination, an additional South Lyon relay team qualified for the state finals this past weekend at the Ann Arbor Huron River Rat Invitational. The 200 freestyle relay team of Greg Sillence, Zack Kadykowski, Chet Jankowski and Matt Witkowski will be making the trip to Ann Arbor this weekend for the state finals being held at the University of Michigan. These four had previously qualified in the 400 freestyle relay after a second-place performance at the Kensington Valley Conference meet held Feb. 25. In addition to these two relay WRESTLE: Pair of Lions ready for Palace trip teams, Witkowski is heading to the state finals as an individual, having qualified to swim in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. The top eight finishers per event will earn medals this weekend. South Lyon was one of the smallest teams present at the KVC meet, but the Lions held their heads high and proudly represented themselves. Every tapered swimmer on the team dropped time, something that no other team in the KVC can claim. The squad had outstanding swims from Witkowski, clearly one of the most accomplished swimmers in the KVC. He domi- said. “They had great attitudes, given the fact that we weren’t winning much at the beginning of the season and we faced some challenges.” Theoretically, only one player — senior Ryan Marken — will not be back on next season’s South Lyon roster. “I think we’ll be very competitive,” Clayton said of the 2006-07 Lions. “Everybody is looking forward to enhancing their games.” Ann Arbor Pioneer defeated Ann Arbor Huron by a score of 70-56 in Monday’s 7 p.m. game; Pioneer and Dexter were to have played against Pinckney and Saline in last Wednesday’s semifinals games before tomorrow night’s 7 p.m. district title showdown. Back on Feb. 28, the Lions played their last Kensington Valley Conference game of the season against Howell and came up short, losing 46-44. A win would have given the Lions a share of second place in the final “They had great attitudes, given the fact that we weren’t winning much at the beginning of the season and we faced some challenges.” Daren Clayton South Lyon head basketball coach KVC standings. Zack Short led the Lions with 13 points in this contest, and McMullen and Eric Wedesky each contributed 11 points apiece. John Mueller is a sports reporter for the South Lyon Herald. Caristo and Chandler, a 171pounder, earned their trips to the Palace by placing in the top four spots at the individual regional finals held at Charlotte High School on Feb. 25. Both compiled “It’s a lot better that someone else is going, too.” NOW PLAYING Mark Caristo South Lyon wrestler 3-1 records on the day, and both finished in third place overall.
