Courage — Noun — the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear. Have you ever done something you knew was the right thing to do, even though you were scared to do it? Have you ever tried something that looked very hard, even though you weren’t sure you’d be able to do it? Deciding to put aside your fear and do something that scares you — even though it scares you — is courage in action, and you probably felt very good about what you did. And you should! Courage shows up in many ways all around you. Courage is standing up for a friend, helping someone in need or sticking with something that is hard for you to do. Sometimes, things that scare us are scary just because they are new, but trying new things is how we grow. As a young person, courage is one of the most important things you can develop. Having courage makes you a better person, a better student, a better martial artist and a better citizen. Why did the turkey cross the road? Because it was the chicken’s day off! What is it that even the most careful person overlooks? Their nose! SOAP CLOUDS This cool science experiment shows what happens when trapped water heats, expands, and vaporizes. You will need adult supervision and permission to use the microwave. 1. First, fill a bowl with water and drop a bar of Ivory soap into the bowl. This experiment will not work will all types of bar soap, so make sure you have Ivory brand soap. 2. Remove your soap from the water, let it dry, and place the bar in the middle of a plate covered with a paper towel. 3. Place the plate in the center of the microwave oven. 4. Cook your soap on high for two minutes. 5. Watch the bar of soap expand and erupt into beautiful, puffy clouds. Let your soap cloud cool for at least two minutes before you remove it from the microwave. Why did it turn into a cloud? The expanding effect is caused by the water that gets trapped in the air bubbles in the bar of soap. The water turns into steam as it is heated and, when that air gets trapped, it creates bubbles in the heated, soft, pliable soap. MAZE MADNESS Fall is here and it’s time to rake leaves!
