PRODUCING a 100 international quality academic papers this year is not out of the question for
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), said the deputy dean of Graduate Studies and Research.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, Dr David J Young said that over the last few years they have
seen a steady increase in research output.
"We measure the ability of our staff by output, how often they publish and where, how often they
patent and where does their research lead to," he said.
Last year he estimated that UBD had produced around 40 to 50 papers. In total, the university had
produced around 700 papers.
The other measure was how often papers were cited internationally, he said, adding that UBD research
had been cited by overseas researchers over 6,000 times.
Dr Young said that their goal was to have every active researcher produce at least two such
international quality papers, and by doing that, 100 papers was not out of the question.
"In order to achieve that, we need to identify and fund promising projects, either from the internal
funding from the existing budget or apply through the Brunei Research Council," he said.
There was also a need to further increase human capacity as a lot of young Bruneians will be going
overseas to study in top schools around the world with the goal of returning back to UBD to share
knowledge and expertise.

The deputy dean also highlighted their eminent professor programme, where internationally acclaimed
scientists or social scientists were invited to come work with local staff and students.
Alongside this, he said that the Graduate Studies and Research Office will also be lining up workshops
that will address a wide range of research skills, from statistics, ethics in research and scientific writing.
They also hope to file more patents this year, he said, noting they can be a source of financial return
for the university and the government.
