Fiscal Year 2011
July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011
Seasons
of Giving
There is no season
such delight can bring,
As summer, autumn,
winter, and the spring.
~ William Browne
The Liberty Hospital
Foundation works
throughout the year to
make a difference as a
farmer works his land –
each season is a time of
its own. Thank you to all
the donors who give to let
us grow and respond to
the needs of each season!
It is, generally, in the season of prosperity
that men discover their real temper,
principles, and designs.
~ Edmund Burke
T
he First day of a new Fiscal year – the Financial Season –
work has already begun to prepare for the annual audit and
the 990 IRS tax form. The Foundation is working from a budget
that was planned in April but as the new year dawns, the rubber
must hit the road and all the plans must fit with the designated
budget. The Financial Affairs Committee works to blend all the
ingredients needed for a successful year.
O
ur golf planning goes on in earnest in July when the heat
of the summer is pushing things to grow. We are midway
between our two big events of the year. Work to make the golf
tournament a success is in full swing. The golf season is always a
busy time with loads of committee work making preparation for
the big day. The fog lifted in time for the morning round to get
off and a beautiful day was enjoyed by all. 2010 Golf was a huge
success thanks to the committee’s efforts to raise funds and lower
costs. Over $12,000 was raised ABOVE the amounts given in
recent years. No job is too small or dirty for Co-Chairs Lynn Wood
and Dave Hinck. We could not raise this much money without the
help of Corporate Sponsor, UMB. Their dedication to the success
of the event is so meaningful. Longtime friends of the Foundation
Golf Tournament and knights on white horses, Karen and Mark
Mathes, sponsored the Putting Contest. We are
always grateful to longtime Hospitality
Sponsors, Alliance Radiology and Liberty
Emergency Physicians.
The Raffle Sponsors are critical
to our success – thanks to JE
Dunn, Eclipsys Corporation,
Faultless Linen, Liberty Hospital,
Polsinelli Shughart PC, and WJE
Healthcare Architects. Special
thanks to HyVee – Jeff Eslick
made a huge difference by
donating breakfast – and
to The Dish for giving
a special
rate for
delicious hors d’oeuvres. This event
would not happen without the
dedication of fifty volunteers who
make the day a logistical dream and
a lot of fun!
H
oliday Year End Season is when letters are mailed to
donors asking for help at year-end. Mailings go to
TreeHouse guests and donors to the Foundation asking them
to support our ongoing programs. TreeHouse takes on a special
quality over the holiday season when it is decorated and
provides a place for respite and recovery for guests.
Especially the winter of 2010-11 when the weather
was brutal on many occasions and record snows
made travel very difficult. Both family members and
patients themselves find TreeHouse a welcome relief
from the wear and tear a hospital stay can deliver.
TreeHouse volunteers, supported by Jean Moorefield,
Mary Willadsen, and Debbie Ralls in Volunteer Services,
are a delight to be around and a huge help to guests. The
house is so well cared for thanks to Tamera Evans, Rod Hart,
and the fabulous crew in Hospital Plant Services.
We ought to do good to others
as simply as a horse runs, or
a bee makes honey, or a vine
bears grapes season after
season without thinking of
the grapes it has borne.
~ Marcus Aurelius
A gift in season is a
double favor to the needy.
~ Publilius Syrus
No one thinks of Winter
when the grass is green.
~ Rudyard Kipling
Live in each season
as it passes.
~ Henry David Thoreau
P
lanning Season – new board members get up and running and
committees begin to function. In particular, the scholarship
committee hits its stride approving the plans for the year, analyzing
the applications, interviewing the finalists, and choosing a new
recipient of the scholarship. With seven students in the pipeline,
each year brings us closer to those students becoming full time
employees of Liberty Hospital. Most of the students in the program
work at the Hospital part time or over the summer. They are being
mentored by a nursing Director and begin to feel as if they are ‘part
of the family’. Our Scholarship students have the opportunity to
work at the Hospital as they are able and over the summer - at first
in the Education Department, building computer based learning
modules and supporting the educators, then later, as their education
permits, as Nurse Tech’s. The Oldag Nursing scholarship, given by
Jack and Nancy Oldag in memory of their daughter, Julie, supports
a current employee pursuing a BSN or MSN degree.
T
his quote is on the Marjolein Bastin calendar that hangs in the
Foundation office conference room. This beautiful calendar is
a reminder of Marjolein’s mission – to share nature’s beauty every
day. There are now four endowed days given by Marjolein. The
‘MB’ days at TreeHouse are special because she has also tied them to
a season to celebrate her love of nature. She has long observed her
birthday with a gift to charity – lovely! – and her first gift to Endow
a Day at TreeHouse followed many gifts to create the beautiful patio
and gardens that face the walking trail. The grounds at TreeHouse,
lovingly cared for by Hospital Groundskeeper, Bill Elder, and
his crew, could not better enhance the experience of staying at
TreeHouse. The chance to get away from the sounds and smells of
the hospital to TreeHouse is most appreciated by guests. Nature
pulls them outdoors and then starts the healing when guests
take a walk or spend time on the patio. Marjolein imagined the
grace and beauty of nature supporting the healing process when
she made her generous gifts. By giving $10,000 each year for
the following three years, she celebrated the seasons and Earth
Day. Her gifts total over $100,000 to TreeHouse.
Spring is nature’s way of

wilight Season – the twilight of the fiscal year is also the time
when Twilight at the TreeHouse is staged. The spring brings
with it both the green and new life but also the rain. This year’s
event was moved inside when the weather forecast was less than ideal
for an outdoor event. While a violent storm avoided us, the dew
point was beyond the comfort level and most guests were happy to
be in the air-conditioned lobby and bridge of the Medical Plaza East.
Committee chair, Marianne Hill, had to make the tough call but
her cracker-jack committee was ready to change plans and the event
went off without a hitch! Special thanks to Rogers Sporting Goods,
The Whittaker Group, and McClelland Law for
supporting the event at the Corporate level.
Over 230 people attended the evening
of music and BBQ. It was exciting to
raise $35,000 to support the work of
the Foundation.
This was also
the season
when Margie
Lemmon, resident
assistant for TreeHouse from the
opening, retired and moved to
Tennessee to be near family. She will
be missed! Brenda Grantham was hired
to be the second TreeHouse Resident
Assistant and started her new position the
week after the Twilight event.

an and Wanda O’Dell made a special gift to continue what
is now called the ABCD award. Originally given to support
employees who deserved recognition, a new gift from the O’Dells
allows the Foundation to continue the modified program that now
rewards nurses who perform Above and Beyond the Call of Duty.
Nurses are nominated for providing exemplary patient care and
excellence in clinical practice.
As the fiscal year was about to close, another special gift came from
Dr. Michael Lowe. Mike and his wife Lisa’s family and friends’
involvement with the Foundation motivated them to make a
generous gift supporting our most pressing need, TreeHouse.
There is an intersection in most people’s lives when they decide they
want to make a difference for an organization and their experience
with the non-profit makes them feel that the impact of their gift will
make a real difference. Their loyalty to the cause and the leadership of the
organization allows them to think about making a planned gift. The Liberty
Hospital Foundation is most fortunate to have friends who have made a provision in their estate plan
to make a gift to provide long lasting support. If you are interested in making a gift to the Foundation
through your will or through a life income plan, please call the office at 816-792-7014.
Thank you for your support of
the Liberty Hospital Foundation.
Your gifts make a difference
every season of the year.
Liberty Hospital Foundation Mission Statement
Guided by the Hospital’s strategic plan, our mission is
to provide financial support to The Liberty Hospital by
funding programs that will have a positive impact on
the patients and employees of the Liberty Hospital,
and therefore the community and the region. The
Foundation does this by identifying and developing
projects, raising money to support those projects, and
by carefully managing the endowed funds entrusted
to the Foundation.

This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one
that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not
concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or
unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young
and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life,
re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul,
and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent
lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.
~ Walt Whitman
