Prophets, Ladies, and Friends of the Grottoes of North America,
Greetings from your new Grand Monarch! Liz and I are
proud to serve as your representatives for the coming year.
We look forward to traveling around the Realm and meeting
as many of you as physically possible in the year to come.
is a lofty goal, but one that is attainable. It will take all of
us working together to achieve, but it is possible. If we fall
short of 14,000 members but still have more members than
we had last year, we still will have won.
Congratulations to Moe and Susan Evans on completing
what turned out to be a historic year for the Grottoes of North
America. They and their committee hosted a fine convention
in Orlando, Florida, with many fun activities for those in
attendance. The Convention was highlighted by the news
that the overall membership in the Grottoes of North America
increased for the first time in many years. We are excited by
the news, and anxious to see that trend continue.
Lastly, I want all of our members to focus on our
Humanitarian Foundation, the official charity of the Grottoes
of North America. As Grotto members, we need to remember
that charity begins at home. Although there are numerous
fine charities throughout the land, many of them masonically
affiliated, the Humanitarian Foundation is OUR charity. As
each Grotto looks for ways to spend their charity dollars, think
of the Foundation first, not as an afterthought. We trumpet
our good works for children with special needs all across the
land, but if we ourselves do not give our financial support to
our cause, how can we ask others to do the same? I am again
asking each of you to take on the challenge of supporting or
continuing to support the Humanitarian Foundation with the
purchase of one more Enchanted Lantern than you bought
last year. If you have never made a contribution in the past,
this year should be that year!
With the advent of the Fairchild
and Legacy Programs, there are
many ways to contribute to the
Foundation. I trust that one of
those programs will appeal to you.
The theme for my Grand Monarch’s year is “Grotto Is
The Music Of Life.” I believe that music has the ability to add
flavor and excitement to life, much like a movie soundtrack
adds excitement and suspense to a movie. In my life, Grotto
helps add the flavor and excitement to my life. It takes a life
that is already wonderful and makes it fantastic! Spending
time with Grotto friends across
the U.S. and Canada is one of
the joys of my life, and I can’t
imagine my life withoutthis
blessing.
Grand Monarch’s
Message
My focus for this year is going to
be three-fold. First, I want to see all of
the Grottoes return to their roots and
find what made them strong in their
early years. One way of doing this is to
work on proficiency in our ritual, starting
with our meeting opening and closing
ceremonies. Our ritual work reflects our
attitude toward our organization. Pride
in the way we perform our ritual will
translate to pride in the organization as a
whole, and I believe will result in a more
positive attitude that will be noticeable in
the Masonic community. We can’t expect
other Masons to hold us in high regard
unless we ourselves show that we cherish
the values that Grotto teaches.
In closing, I want to thank all of you
for the opportunity to serve you as your
Grand Monarch. It is truly an honor, and
not one that I will take lightly. There
are many challenges ahead, but if we all
work together, there is no goal that we
cannot achieve. Liz and I, along with our
committee, are planning a great convention
in Nashville, Tennessee. Information
concerning the hotel and various activities
are available on the website, and will be
featured in the next magazine. I hope you
will all plan to spend your summer holiday
with us and all of your Grotto friends in

Secondly, I want to continue the
positive trend in membership growth
for the Grottoes of North America. To do this, I am asking
each individual member, and each Grotto, to commit to this
goal. Each member should attempt to bring in one more new
member than they brought in last year. Each Grotto should set
a goal to, at a minimum, finish the year with one more member
than what they started. I have set a goal for the Grottoes of
North America to finish the year with 14,000 members. This
“Grotto is the Music of Life.”

Introducing Grand Monarch Rebmann
David Rebmann grew up on a small farm near Muncie,
Illinois, the fifth of six children of John and Janice Rebmann.
There he learned to ride horses, build forts, and swim in the
stream that ran through the farm. David attended school
and church in Muncie, and this is where his love of learning
began. In high school, David was a letterman in football and
wrestling, participated in the school plays and musicals, and
was active in student government, serving as senior class
president. After graduation, he attended Eureka College in
Eureka, Illinois, most noted as the alma mater of President
Ronald Reagan. At Eureka, David was a 4 year letterman
on the football team, a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha
fraternity, where he served as President, and served as
President of the Senior Class. David graduated in 1981 with
a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.
President Reagan has been quoted as saying that
everything good in his life began at Eureka College. In many
ways, David feels the same way. As a member of his college
fraternity, David began to learn the meaning of Brotherhood.
This experience would guide him toward the Masonic
fraternity in later years, and helped to shape him into the man
he is today. The best thing to come out of David’s time at
Eureka was when he met his wife Liz. She is his partner for
life and his best friend in the world. They married the summer
after graduating from Eureka, and will celebrate their 31st
anniversary this year. The joy of their life is their daughter
Jillian, who lives near them and works as a librarian in Peoria.
Upon graduation, David taught history and coached in
central Illinois for 2 years. He left teaching and worked for
a medical supply firm for 3 years, but still did not feel that
he was in the right profession. In 1986, David joined the
Illinois State Police as a Trooper. David spent 10 years as a
road Trooper in Chicago and Peoria. He became a detective in
1996, working on a variety of cases from theft and financial
crimes to child abuse and homicide cases. David spent 8 years
assigned to an auto theft task force, one of the most fulfilling
assignments of his career. The variety of work and the friends
he made over the years made his career with the Illinois State
Police something he will treasure forever.
David learned about Masonry from his father and
grandfathers. Following in their footsteps, he joined Horeb
Lodge #363 in Elmwood, Illinois, in 1988, where he is a
Life Member. He then became a plural member of Verlin
M. Showalter Lodge #1172 in Bartonville, Illinois, in 1999,
where he served as Master and Secretary. David joined Abbas
Grotto in 1990, and served as Monarch in 1996. He was
President of the Midwest Grotto Association in 2002-2003,
and served as a Trustee of the Humanitarian Foundation of
the Grottoes of North America from 1999 to 2004. In 2005,
David was elected Grand Captain of
the Guard in Overland Park, Kansas,
and has been serving on the Board
since that time.

Enchanted Smile Program
The Enchanted Smile Contest is our way to keep the focus on the children the Humanitarian
Foundation serves and to bring awareness to the Dental Care for Children with Special Needs
Program. Each Dr. of Smiles submits a photo of his clients to his Grotto Association. The Association
President selects a child to represent his Association and photos from all of the Associations will be
displayed at the Supreme Council Session where Grotto members can vote for their favorite Poster
Smile.The contest winner will serve as the Poster Child and will be used on Humanitarian
Foundation materials for the following year.

KOREY
Korey’s dental treatment has been sponsored through
Feramo Grotto in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her father, Jim,
joined Grotto because of the help their daughter received
through the Grotto Dental Program. He wanted in some
way to give back and decided to become a member of the
local Blue Lodge and became a member of Feramo Grotto.
During this journey he accepted an office in Feramo Grotto
and this year has served as Monarch. This is truly what you
call “paying it forward!”
Riley has received her dental treatment sponsored
through Zorah Grotto in Santa Clara, California. Her
mother, Dawn, is grateful for the help that she has received
in getting Riley’s dental needs taken care of through our
program.
With the high cost involved in caring for a special needs
child, it was a blessing for them to become part of the
Grotto’s Dental Program.

Humanitarian Foundation Matters
Your Humanitarian Foundation Trustees (HF) met in
Orlando at the beginning of the Annual Session of the Supreme
Council. As guardians of funds contributed around the Realm
for the Dentistry for Children with Special Needs Program, we
are mindful of the current state of our financial investments.
The highly volatile nature of the stock market has wreaked
havoc with many portfolios over the past two years, including
that of the HF. Ultimately, we have fared reasonably well,
actually growing slightly, compared with others who have
declined over the same period. We have truly been fortunate
to have been able to maintain the total value of our portfolio
at about $12M, while continuing to fund the dental program
and other necessary expenses in the budget at the same time.
That being said, I would like to enlighten the reader
about what actually happens to the funds when you make
a contribution to the HF. The Enchanted Lantern (EL)
contribution of $50 or the Fairchild Society (FS) contributions
of $250 - $25,000 are deposited entirely into the “Corpus”
of the Humanitarian Fund, (currently amounting to
approximately $8M). This is the “Untouchable” portion of
our fund, which we are not permitted to spend at all under
the IRS rules for charitable trusts. We can only withdraw
monies from the ”interest” made on the investments in order
to pay for the dental care for “our children.” In other words,
your $50 contribution does not go to work directly to pay for
a child’s dental care until after it has been invested and had
enough time to grow interest. This is why it is so important
to continue to contribute to the HF, in order to grow a large
enough “Corpus” to generate enough interest to pay the ever
increasing costs of the dental care. The “dilemma” is that as the
actual cost of health care continually rise (inflation) while we
may be having decreasing interest rates in bonds and constant
volatility in the stocks and equities. The financial markets are
risky at times and we realize a responsibility to “safeguard”
the Fund as well as the need to “grow” the value of the Fund
as much as possible.
The HF financial dilemma lies in the ever -increasing
number of children needing our assistance (Good Job by
the Doctors of Smiles!) and the inflationary increases in the
cost of that care (mostly hospital cost). Our budget, despite
repeated cuts and trimmings, has necessitated more draws
on the interest pool from investments. We should only be
drawing out 5% of our funds annually, in order to maintain
a large enough fund value. With 5% withdrawal rate, we
would need to seek 8% return on investments to abide by
this rule. (We averaged at best 3- 5% return) So far this year,
we have commitments necessitating draws of almost 10% of
our available funds. At this rate, we are very concerned about
sustaining our charity in the future. Unfortunately, the HF
will need to continue to make some cuts in their budget, due

to this shortfall. Your contributions are more
important than ever to meet the demands of
our highly successful program. There are
many more children each year.
Yes, I said shortfall! I know it is hard to believe with the
fantastic contribution levels of the past two years, since the
start of the new Fairchild Society levels. Over the past year,
still only 5% of all Prophets have purchased an EL. We hope
you will help do something about that this year. The statistic
that only 10% of those attending the Annual Session had
contributed to the HF so far this year was shocking to me.
Our goal is to have every Grotto achieve 100% of its Prophets
buying at least one (1) EL per year or the equivalent. That
would be wonderful, but we have a ways to go folks!
We strongly feel that it should be the goal in every Prophet’s
mind to achieve 100% participation of their Grotto in the EL
purchases. That’s the equivalent of one EL per member.
(100 members= 100 ELs.) After all, how important is the
Foundation’s Charity to you? Fifty dollars per member per
year is cheap when you put it into perspective! (That’s merely
disciplining yourself to commit $1 per week.) We need your
help. What can you do to assist us?
Over the past year, we are proud of the fact that the HF
has returned many dollars back to the Grottoes in the form
of remuneration to be used for charitable endeavors. We do
not hear much about how that money has been used by your
Grotto to help promote “Grotto.” Due to this financial and
budgetary difficulty, we find it necessary to reduce this budget
item amount coming out of the fund for the children. We want
to continue to reward good efforts by individual Grottoes and
acknowledge those who are contributing at a level equal to
or above the 100% EL purchases participation. In the coming
year, HF will remunerate 5% to the Prophet’s Grotto on all EL
purchases and FS contributions. For Grottoes achieving the
100% EL Participation level, HF will return 10% of the EL
purchases to the Grotto for charitable endeavors to promote
the name of “Grotto” in their local communities. We hope this
will encourage your Grotto members to contribute more and
strive to achieve true 100% support of the Official Charity of
the Grottoes of North America. All of our contributors to the
Fairchild (FS) will be acknowledged in the Grotto Magazine
as we have in the past. We feel strongly that these individuals
and groups truly rate our special recognition for the “spark”
of excitement they add.

Fairchild Society Program Circle Awards
Named for the Grotto’s Chief Founder, LeRoy Fairchild,
the Fairchild Society is for major donors who may choose
from a variety of levels including pledges. Prophets receive
corresponding emblems representative of their gifts.

Because of the tremendous generosity of the Prophets,
their family and friends, the Humanitarian Foundation is
proud to announce two new levels of giving to the Fairchild
Society. The Emerald Silver Circle is for a $2,500 level

Council Grottoes of North America
for the invitation to attend their
122nd Convention in Orlando, FL
in July. What an honor it was to represent the Daughters of
Mokanna, as Grand Monarch Moe Evans allowed me the
opportunity to speak at several events. The courtesies and
kindnesses extended to me were overwhelming and I thank
you. I will never forget that week as it was truly one of the
highlights of my year as Supreme MCO.
To the Grottoes, with Caldron’s, throughout the Realm,
where I did my visitations, I thank all you Prophets for all
the support you have given to the Daughters of Mokanna
and to me.

attending and supporting the Ohio Special Olympics for seven
years (at their own cost) and occasionally get help from Khana
Shar Grotto. Aut Mori would like to challenge other Grottoes
to get involved since the kids really enjoy the clowns.

For the third time in the past six years, Noruh Grotto has
conferred the Short Form Initiation Ceremony on their state’s
Grand Master. MWGM Frederick E. Kaiser Jr, along with a
class of twelve other Prophets were received into the Realm.
The conferral was conducted on all the Grand Presiding
Officers of the York Rite Bodies of Freemasonry in Michigan.
Each Grand Officer was presented with his own jeweled fez
of his office. Standing (l. to r.) Hugh Keller, David Cabler,
Richard Butowski, Michael Leonard, Frank Grebenok,
Steve Eliopoulos, Gary Paquet, Mark Olson, Don Gardner.
Seated (l. to r.) Roy Ickes, Mike Whiting, Louis Stevich,
MWGM Fred Kaiser, Dwight Humm and William Herlihy.
Samoor Grotto held a special toothbrush program at Sam’s
Club in Bradenton, Florida. Samoor had a great turnout of
Grotto members and sparked a lot of interest in the Grotto
and Humanitarian Foundation programs. They raised more
than $400 in less than 8 hours. Pictured below are Samoor

Zendah Grotto is growing! Willie Carreras shows off
his new recruits, who are all excited to get active at Zendah.
Gary Bryant and his son James are anxious to serve as
officers. James is currently serving as Worshipful Master
even though he is only 26 years old. Willie has promised the
Grand Monarch ten new Prophets this year, so he will still
be working. Zendah Caldron is very happy that three of the

CHILDREN!
The Grottoes of North America
started helping special needs children
in 1949 with a focus on Cerebral
Palsy research. In 1969 the Grotto
began a Dental Program to help
families with special needs children
since the most needed service, but not received, is dental
care. With many special needs children dental coverage
is the first service needed, but not received since dental
coverage is often the first insurance dropped by corporate
health programs.
The Grotto’s Dental Care Program is always the
secondary carrier when primary insurance is involved.
Our program does not cover patients who are covered
by Medicaid. The Humanitarian Foundation does not
cover any type of orthodontics, reconstructive jaw
surgeries or implants. All dental needs are required to be
pre-authorized for payment, except initial exam x-rays.
Applications are submitted to a local Dr. of Smiles then
the confidential application is sent to the Humanitarian
Foundation office for processing.
