How to Defrag Your Hard Disk in Windows 7
Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Disk
Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. It should run
on a schedule, but you can also defragment your hard disk manually.
1. Open Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking
Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Disk Defragmenter.
If you are
prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.
A screen similar to the following should appear.
2. Select (C:) and click on the Analyze disk button, which will take a few minutes. If the
number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.

3. Click Defragment disk and a pane similar to the following will appear,
where you can now see progress of the disk being defragmented.
Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size
and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the
defragmentation process.
NOTE: You can abort the defragmentation at any time by clicking on the Stop operation button.
4. When finished, click on the Close button.
