Celebrating 30 Years
Shaker Schools Foundation
From thePresident
The 2011 fiscal year was my third and final year as president of the Shaker
Schools Foundation. Guided by our Strategic Plan, governed by a
dedicated board, and supported by loyal donors who believe in the value
of a Shaker public school education, the Shaker Schools Foundation
experienced a busy and productive twelve months. And, for these same
reasons, our recent past has been a time of impressive growth.
I am pleased to report that the Shaker Schools Foundation’s
portfolio has remained robust, and we have continued to receive clean
independent audits. Our investments benefited from a strong second
quarter and finished at $1.896 million. Our Annual Fund continued to
grow and exceeded $115,000, thanks to the generosity of our donors.
In addition, we contained our operating expenses, such that we ended
with a surplus for the second consecutive year. Finally, the Foundation
continues to receive contributions to our new unrestricted endowment,
the Legacy Fund.
The Foundation exists to provide resources to enrich the
educational experiences of students in the Shaker Heights City Schools.
From July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011, we continued to focus on four
broad goals: raise permanent, unrestricted endowment; increase the
number of alumni donors; increase the number of donors in Northeast
Ohio; and increase the board’s efficiency. Elsewhere in this Annual
Report you will read the details of our activities.
During fiscal year 2011, our donors helped us to fulfill our mission
through grants to 44 teachers; awards to recognize the academic and
co-curricular accomplishments of 59 students; and through financial
support of the Minority Achievement Committee’s programs, school
libraries, and International Baccalaureate, among many other special
projects. The Shaker Schools Foundation also continued managing more
than 85 named endowment funds, publishing a quarterly newsletter, and
reaching out to Shaker alumni and donors. Our new video will give you a
sense of the Foundation’s positive impact on Shaker’s public schools (you
can see it at www.shaker.org/foundation). I do hope we have connected
with you throughout the year.
I have appreciated working with our board and staff, District
administration, and the School Board. Being in a leadership position for
the past three years has provided me with a very special perspective
on the community in which I have spent almost my entire life. Thus, it
is with deep gratitude and humility that I personally, and on behalf of
the Board of Trustees, commend all of our donors for helping to ensure
that the Shaker Schools Foundation continues to serve and support the
Shaker Heights City Schools.

Shaker Schools Foundation
30 Years of Growth,
Opportunity, and Service
I
n autumn 2011, the Shaker Schools
Foundation began celebrating its
30th anniversary. The nonprofit was
founded in November 1981 by citizens who
believed that Shaker parents, graduates,
and residents might make contributions in
support of extra programs that were not
covered by the school district’s budget.
One of the first foundations in the country
to raise funds for a public school system,
the Shaker Schools Foundation was
designed to receive “gifts and bequests for
scholarships, capital improvements, and
special programs for the ultimate benefit
of the students of the Shaker Heights
City School District,” according to Joseph
Ruggie, our first president. As has often
been the case, our community’s leaders
made a bold, pace-setting decision in
support of our schools – and thanks to the
generosity of the Foundation’s donors,
their vision is having dazzling results.
4
Celebrating 30 Years
Shaker Schools Foundation
The Foundation’s original purpose was
to “create opportunities for special and
advanced study. . . endow programs in
support of curriculum. . . help sustain this
community’s tradition of excellence in
integrated living and learning and other
scholarship aid.” At the end of the first
year, the Foundation’s assets were $41,651.
Today, they are close to $2 million.
Over the course of three decades, the
Shaker Schools Foundation has provided
more than $3 million for programs and
initiatives that help define the high quality
of education that sets Shaker apart from
other public and private school systems.
The Foundation is guided by its mission
to provide resources to enrich the
educational experiences of Shaker’s 5,400
students. Over the years, this has involved
a range of programs, but certain areas of
enrichment support have been consistent:
• Reading
• Math and science
• Social studies and history
• Humanities
• Music, art, and theater
• Achievement efforts
• Capital projects
• Technology
Through grants to teachers, awards
to students, special projects, and
capital improvements, the Foundation
supports innovation, research, aesthetic
enhancements, and special opportunities
for students that would not otherwise
be available. Early in its existence, the
Foundation responded to the District’s
desire to jump ahead of the technology
explosion and provide computers in every
classroom. Today, thanks to proceeds
from A Night for the Red & White and
donations directly to the Foundation,
Shaker students learn in environments that
feature projected learning and exciting
new technological tools.
2011 Annual Report
As the Foundation has grown over the
years, its operation has become more
sophisticated. With the hiring of the
first development director in 2001 and
additional staff in subsequent years, the
Foundation’s trustees have undertaken
several strategic planning processes,
continued to follow best practices in
fundraising, and adopted a series of
policies governing receipts, investments,
and expenditures.
Looking forward, the Foundation’s current
trustees and staff anticipate that with
thoughtful planning, good governance, and
a growing number of donors, the Shaker
Schools Foundation will have an everincreasing impact on the Shaker Schools.
The Foundation recently established an
unrestricted endowment, the Legacy
Fund, to receive planned gifts and provide
ongoing and significant financial support
for the Shaker Schools. This, in turn, will
help ensure that the excellence of a Shaker
Schools education will keep pace with
our global and multicultural society. And,
in recognition of recent trends in social
media, the Foundation created a video
(posted on our website and on You Tube)
and marked its actual 30th birthday by
launching its own Facebook page.
The world around us continues to change,
but the Shaker Schools Foundation is the
beneficiary of two constants: a committed,
bright, and passionate Board of Trustees
and an equally committed and generous
community of donors. Indeed, some of
our current contributors have been with
us for three decades. (They are indicated
on pages 8 to 13.) Through the continued
growth of the Shaker Schools Foundation,
the future for our children, schools, and
community will be bright.
5
Year in Review
July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011
The Shaker Schools Foundation’s Strategic Plan continues
to form the framework that guides its activities. The plan’s
four goals are:
Increase the Shaker Schools Foundation’s permanent,
unrestricted endowment. The Endowment Committee
completed all written materials for the Legacy Fund and
is receiving commitments through pledges, bequests,
and other planned gifts. As of June 30, 2011, more
than $225,000 in cash was contributed, and known
expectancies from trustees total another $780,000.
Increase the percentage of alumni donors to the Shaker
Schools Foundation. The Alumni Committee continues
to improve connectivity with Shaker graduates, through
a Facebook page and expanded services to reunion
groups. In summer and fall 2010, the classes of 1950,
1960, 1970, 1980, 1985, 1990, and 2000 enjoyed tours of
the High School hosted by Foundation trustees. A new
group of docents has been established to help with
these tours. The Foundation also hosted a breakfast for
the 2010 inductees into the Alumni Association’s Hall of
Fame. Importantly, the Foundation has been working
with representatives from the Classes of June 1950 and
January 1951 on a significant gift that will help Shaker
students achieve their potential, regardless of family
income.
6
Celebrating 30 Years
Shaker Schools Foundation
Increase the number of Northeast
Ohio donors to the Shaker Schools
Foundation. The Foundation connects with
its supporters through events, personal
phone calls, and a quarterly newsletter.
The Donor Stewardship Committee
planned and hosted an evening about
the International Baccalaureate Program
on November 18, 2010; about 85 Annual
Fund donors attended. We also partnered
with the district to host two briefing
breakfasts with the superintendent in April
2011. In addition, we hosted a reception
for parents of the Class of 2000 in an
effort to keep local parents of alumni
informed and connected to the schools.
The Foundation also provided special
recognition for its top 20 (non-board)
donors, who collectively contributed
more than $185,000 to the Annual Fund,
Auditorium Campaign, named funds, and
the Legacy Fund in FY2011. Corporate
sponsors of the Foundation receive yearround recognition, including Red & White
sponsor packages. A record number of
24 corporate sponsors partnered with the
Foundation in 2011. Finally, the Foundation
introduced a new video to tell its story
through the voices of donors and the
students and faculty who have been the
beneficiaries of its support.
Increase the efficiency of the Board.
Orientation sessions were conducted
for new trustees to provide an overview
of Foundation policies and procedures.
Committee meetings focused on the
establishment of goals for the year so
that projects and activities could be
accomplished effectively. Bimonthly
trustee meetings provided important
information for the trustees to assist
them in marketing the Foundation to the
community.

Enrichment Grants
Annual proceeds from many of the Shaker
Schools Foundation’s endowed funds
support teacher grants that enrich the
education of Shaker’s students. During the
2011 fiscal year, the Foundation distributed
$11,424 in 26 enrichment grants to 44
teachers. Sample grants in elementary,
middle, and high school buildings
provided:
• Support of basic skills among
Kindergarteners and their families at
Lomond and Mercer elementary schools;
• Supplemental reading materials with a
global emphasis and math enrichment
activities in the K-4 buildings;
• Two of National Geographic’s floor-sized
maps for time-limited use by fifth and
sixth graders at Woodbury;
• Achievement gap activities at Shaker
Middle School;
• Materials for the Science Olympiad and
Latin Club, enrichment activities for
the study of French and Spanish, and
support for the engineering classes at
Shaker Heights High School.
The Foundation also provided $22,077
in additional funds to support special
projects, such as music lessons, camps,
and travel assistance for underprivileged
students; enhancements to library
collections; and high interest educational
materials for special needs students.
For the MAC Scholars Program, the
Foundation raised $5,000 from the Harry
K. Fox and Emma R. Fox Foundation
and $4,000 from Key Foundation. The
Foundation also helped raise $30,000 from
the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation
to support implementation of the
International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Program.
