We believe in preserving our marine life and environment while inspiring the human spirit through leadership in education, research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release. •C learwater Marine Aquarium is a working marine animal hospital. • In 1984, Clearwater Marine Aquarium successfully rehabilitated the very first dolphin to survive a stranding in Florida. Sunset Sam remained a resident at the Aquarium until 2001. • T he Aquarium is one of only five active facilities treating endangered sea turtles afflicted with the fibropapilloma virus. Thanks to this program we have released more than 60,000 hatchlings into the Gulf of Mexico over the past 8 years! • T he Aquarium responds to cetacean (i.e. dolphin and whale) and sea turtle stranding events in the Gulf of Mexico and greater Florida region. CMA’s designated response areas include Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, and Levy County. •C MA became an integral member of the Southeast Region Stranding Network in 1979. Since this inception, CMA’s Stranding Team has responded to over 575 stranded cetaceans and over 1,500 sea turtles. •C learwater Marine Aquarium has been actively involved in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of 37 North American river otters since our otter rescue program began almost 30 years ago. • Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Summer Camp Program “Summer with Winter” was voted Nickelodeon’s Best Day Camp (2009). • In 2012, the Aquarium opened the R.O. Teachers, after scheduling your field trip, visit the Aquarium for free to plan your trip. Just present your teacher ID at the ticket window. Groups may visit the Aquarium any time. Group visits are a self-guided (Aquarium guide not provided) look at the Aquarium. An educational program may be added to a Group Visit. WHERE TO GO WHEN YOU ARRIVE We recommend that only the group leader check in at the Will Call window at the Aquarium. At this time the group leader will pay for the entire group and will receive wristbands for entry into the Aquarium and Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure. We suggest the remaining members of the group stay on your bus or other mode of transportation. The group leader can then return to the group and distribute the wristbands. This will assist with entry as everyone can then exit the bus and enter the Aquarium directly. Adopt one of our resident animals, learn about it in your classroom, and then come visit it here at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. (Pre K – 8) Learn about turtle anatomy, behavior and the differences between tortoises, water turtles and sea turtles. Interact with live turtles in the classroom to better understand their unique adaptations and commonalities, and then go out into the Aquarium and compare them to their sea turtle cousins. Find out what makes these shelled reptiles so special! Life Cycle Stories (pre K – 5) Discover Florida’s fascinating native animals and their life cycle stories. We will examine up-close the life cycle of a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling, using real skulls and shells to exemplify size. Then meet and greet some other Florida natives when we are joined by crawling critters of the deep for a private touch tank session. Operation: Winter’s Tail (K – 12) In cooperation with Hanger Clinic Learn about the chemical, biological, physical, and mathematical processes behind the most famous tail in the world as we walk step by step through the Hanger Clinic’s process as they created a tail for an orphaned dolphin injured in a crab trap line. From geometric design to the physics of water, this program is customized to meet different learning levels based on Sunshine State Standard benchmarks. upper elementary and up WONDERFUL WATERSHED (4 – 8) Do you know your watershed address? Explore the important features of watersheds including topography, head waters, aquifers, surface water and more! Discover what it means to live in a watershed and how water travels through it. Then figure out which watershed the Aquarium calls home and how to locate your home watershed! Tracking Hurricane Leroy (5 – 12) Unlock the secrets of our atmosphere as we discuss tropical storms and hurricanes from how they form to the destruction they can bring. We’ll focus on hurricane formation and tracking as your students transform into mini-meteorologists, watching over Hurricane Leroy. Finish up with a walk through our Hurricane Experience and feel hurricane-force winds in this movie-themed simulator. Water Quality (6 – 12) How does chemistry affect biology? We’ll share the importance of daily water quality testing for the resident animals at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Students will be able to apply what they have learned by performing real laboratory tests alongside our water quality team and learn about the abiotic factors that provide necessary life support for our rescued and rehabilitated animals. SOUNDS OF THE SEA (6 – 12) How is sound utilized in the marine environment? Explore how sound is used for communication, feeding behaviors, reproduction, and navigation. Learn how the differences in anatomy and physiology impact sound production. Discover how sound travels in water vs. air and how salinity, pressure, and temperature impact velocity of sound. Students will discover the connections between noise pollution and the impact on the environment as they listen to hydrophone recordings of our Clearwater Bay dolphin population. 5 GROUP VISITS & FIELD TRIPS selections S E AFTERSCHOOL ADVENTURE PROGRAMS S Clearwater Marine Aquarium Educational staff members come to your school once a week and conduct an hour long class for up to 30 children. We bring all our own materials, unique curriculum and knowledgeable staff. Our classes range in topic including dolphin behavior, turtle anatomy, bird life, ocean invertebrates, reducing your ecological footprint and more. We are able to modify our content if your students are investigating a certain topic on which we could expand. We offer K – 5th and 6 – 8th programming and would be happy to conduct one or both programs at your school. Custom adventures include a 2-hour long snorkel experience, as well as a narrated scenic trip by one of our Marine Life and Environmental Educators. During the snorkeling adventure, students/guests can get up-close with many of the area’s intertidal animals within the protected waters of Clearwater Bay. Sea urchins, crabs, sea stars, and snails are among the common finds. We customize this program to each age group so you are always within standing depth water. Sea Turtle Nesting CMA works to protect sea turtle nests up and down Pinellas County’s coastlines. Learn all about the loggerhead sea turtle life cycle through an exclusive video presentation that follows the mother sea turtle on Pinellas County beaches. Examine the anatomy of the sea turtle, including hands-on time with real turtle shells and skulls. Participants will have an interactive experience as we simulate the conservation efforts of our sea turtle staff. 9 OUTREACH S OFF-SITE PROGRAMS E No Bones About It! This program focuses on invertebrates. Learn all about the Gulf of Mexico’s smaller inhabitants that call CMA home through this hands-on look at sea stars, crabs, and sea urchins. The program will focus on describing these animals using our five senses, comparing and contrasting locomotion modalities, and discussing survival adaptations. Participants can apply what they have learned by touching some of these creatures to see how these spineless animals have adapted to live on our ocean floor. Flipping for Dolphins Have a class full of future marine mammal trainers? Flipping for Dolphins focuses solely on the work done by CMA with our three resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. The program will discuss learned and natural behaviors and how psychology plays a role in animal care as we discuss the biography of each of CMA’s resident dolphins. Students will learn about training methods, operant conditioning, and positive reinforcement as they apply real training methodology in an interactive activity by “training” one another to do fun behaviors. 10 OUTREACH S program descriptions (Continued) E program descriptions (Continued) Marine Animal Adaptations During this program, students will learn about scientific classification, learned versus natural behaviors, and the adaptations that sea turtles, otters, dolphins, fish, and sharks use to live in their environments. Students will participate in an interactive collaborative activity that will bring out the “wild side” of the group. Bringing Up Baby What does it take to care for an orphaned dolphin or otter pup? This program focuses on the younger rescued animals at CMA and the extra special care needed for these animal babies. Participants will learn how scientists work together to create solutions to complex problems. Students will apply what they have learned by learning how to make dolphin formula, and will view footage of our otter pups. Food Web Journey to Honeymoon Island State Park and meet with real rangers as you learn about the watershed food web. Learn how invasive species impact the native population and the importance of certain keystone species. Meet some unusual critters as you travel from uplands to coastal environments in your journey through the food web. Interdependency Join Clearwater Marine Aquarium for a fun snorkeling excursion into the local estuary. See what lurks beneath the waves and how these animals live, hunt, and hide each day. Travel along to local islands, sea grass flats, and sandbars as we find different seabirds, invertebrates, mammals, and more! Life Cycles Experience the life cycle in action as you learn about five different Florida species, including loggerhead sea turtles, nurse sharks, Eastern brown pelicans, North American river otters, and hermit crabs. These interactive lessons teach students about marine life and are available for use for the entire month as you need them. E Join us aboard our Catamaran “Nicholas’s Journey” to be a part of our Wild Dolphin Research Project and help us study our local dolphin population! August 2013, Clearwater Marine Aquarium initiated a photo identification study to document the lives of the bottlenose dolphin population of Clearwater Bay and Clearwater Harbor. To date, our field biologists have identified and cataloged more than 80 dolphins using pictures taken of their dorsal fins.
