Brr. I can’t believe that I am thinking about water. In January. After many days of rain and freezing rain. More
days of ice and melting ice. Brr. To quote Carol King, “Snow is cold, rain is wet. Chills my soul right to the marrow.” Brr. Despite the chills I get thinking about water, I am indeed thinking about water. There are good
reasons for it though.
One reason I am thinking about water is that the confirmation class has decided to raise funds to buy a water
well through the ELCA Good Gifts program. Here are a few facts about water:
768 million people do not have access to improved drinking water sources.
40 billion hours are spent every year walking to collect water in Africa alone.
Most of the world cannot take a hot shower, get clean water from a faucet or flush a toilet in their home.
ELCA World Hunger works with churches around the world to build wells, train local people to care for
wells, improve sanitation in villages and towns, and teach people how to purify their water so they can
cook and drink with it.
In the coming months you will be hearing more about the need for clean water and what we can do to help provide clean water for others.
Another reason for talking about water is to let you know what is happening at Pine Lake Camp this summer.
The 2017 summer theme is “The Water of Life.”
“When you’re at camp you’re typically near a body of water. A lake, a river, or even a faucet-we are
never far from a water source. Water is a literal source of life: over 60% of our bodies and over 70% of
our planet is water. Water is also a source of our spiritual life. Throughout the Bible we find stories
where water is used as a way God sustains, heals, revives, and saves us. “
“Campers of all ages will engage in this theme through a combination of Bible Study, worship, crafts,
games, environmental activities, and even challenge courses (depending on age). Each day centers on a
Bible story that teaches us about how water and life are gifts from God.”
A representative from Pine Lake camp will join us at worship on Sunday, February 26 to talk with us about the
2017 camp year and theme. The staff are enthusiastic and faith filled and excited to share the Word of God with
us and our children. If you want to take a look at the information before that date you will find it on Crossways’
web page: www.crosswayscamps.org.
“Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace,
and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus “Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.” ELW p. 25

Lent is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends
approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, doing penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement, and self-denial. This event
is observed by Christians in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, and Roman Catholic Churches. Some Anabaptist and evangelical churches also observe the Lenten season. Its institutional
purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial,
and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning
on Friday of Sorrows, further climaxing on Jesus' crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates
in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penance.
Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional or praying
through a Lenten calendar, to draw themselves near to God.. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional
commemoration of Christ's carrying the Cross and of his execution, are often observed. Many Roman
Catholic and some Protestant churches remove flowers from their altars, while crucifixes, religious statues, and other elaborate religious symbols are often veiled in violet fabrics in solemn observance of the
event. Throughout Christendom, some adherents mark the season with the traditional abstention from
the consumption of meat, most notably among Roman Catholics.
Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days Jesus spent
fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public
ministry, after which he endured temptation by Satan.
