While we named these values in 2016, they are a long part of our congregation’s heritage. In 1976, just a few years after UBC defined its conviction that the church must be open to people of all races, the congregation began a discussion about women’s leadership in the church. Later that year, Virginia Lou Mullins was elected as a deacon and was subsequently ordained in January, 1977. In her ordination, UBC joined with the earliest communities of Jesus followers in affirming that Holy Spirit calls both women and men to follow Jesus and equips us all for service in the Kingdom of God. Over the last forty years, UBC has been blessed by the leadership of many women. Below is a list of all the women UBC has ordained over the last forty years. Ordained Deacon Jane Allison Kay Behm Connie Benedict Mo Conville Jennifer Courtney Rosanne Crockett Darleen Dale Clara Dennis Jan Davis Iris Easterling Evelyn Gandy Linda Ginn Gloria Green Ellen Hall Sharon Harris Amy Hinton Julia Kelley Sherry Laughlin Jeannine Laughlin-Porter Donna Matthews Lida McDowell Betty Mitchell Virginia Lou Mullens Peggy Myatt Myra Myrick Thelma Myrick Jennie Noonkester Lucy Parkman Marion Poirier Fern Pearson Pat Robertson Lynda Thoms Karen Walker Beverly Williams Rosemary Woullard Ordained Chaplain Linda Snell McComb Ordained Minister Licensed Minister Ashley Gill Harrington Charlotte Ellzey Every effort has been made to go back through UBC’s historical records for a comprehensive list of ordained women. If someone’s name has been omitted please contact the church office so our record may be complete. These lunch meetings provide a time for congregational conversation and dreaming together about our future. Please bring food to share for our covered dish lunch (bring a pot). We also invite you to bring a special donation. After we paid all our expenses for the CHC process, we are just under $1,000 short. Help us pay off the last bit of those expenses by bringing a special donation to the lunch (put something in the pot). The Mississippi Book of Quotations written by David Crews of Oxford, Mississippi. The book is filled with quotations from and about Mississippi. Quotations from Mississippi writers, musicians, sports heroes, and everyday Mississippians. Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Fannie Lou Hamer, Oprah Winfrey, Elvis Presley, Archie Manning, Morgan Freeman, and John Grisham just to name a few. This is a perfect coffee table book. The book is divided into 65 categories. The 2000 quotations are comical, sad, and thought provoking. After reading this book you might understand and have more of an insight to our culture that helps us connect to each other. The author collected the quotations over his lifetime. When he was a young boy he formed a friendship with Faulkner while stealing apples from his tree. His friendship with Welty was formed by bringing her the New York Times each day. David Crews is a very interesting person himself. He has walked the 450 miles of the Natchez Trace, climbed the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, helped raise over 2 million dollars for a children's hospital and traveled the world. He serves as clerk for the federal courts of the Northern District of Mississippi. He and his family live in Oxford.
