Remote Access to Linux Lab
The following tells you how to access the Linux lab from a personal computer at home running
Microsoft Windows using a program called putty. You must have internet access on your home
computer. Putty allows you to create a remote connection to the Linux lab. It opens up the
equivalent of an x-terminal window on your home computer, which allows you to execute linux
command line features.
Step 1: Download “putty.exe”
First you must down load a program called “putty.exe”. It is free on the web.
You can find it at:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
or
search for putty.exe from google or yahoo. Download putty.exe onto your
personal computer.
Step 2: Run putty.exe
Note: If you have a dialup connection, be sure you are connected to the internet.
A putty configuration screen will come up.
For the Host Name (or IP address ) enter the IP address on one of the computers in
the Linux network. The valid IP addresses are:
157.201.194.201
“
“ “ 202
.
.
157.201.194.210
The Port must be set to 215.
Under Protocol click on SSH.
Under Saved Sessions: You may enter a name and click on the “Save Button”. This will
save the IP address and protocol information. Next time you start up putty you can click
on the “Load” button and you won’t have to retype in the IP address and port #.
Once this information is entered you may save it using the “Save” button
Step 3: Connect: Once the IP address, Port # , and SSH have been selected or loaded, click on
“Open” to make the connection.
A command prompt window, similar to your Linux X-terminal window should pop up
asking you to login.
Enter your Linux user Id and then your Linux Password. You should be logged on.
Once logged on you may use the g++ compiler, style checker, and run the test beds and submit
your assignments. You will have to use “Emacs”, “Pico”, or “vi” for your text editor.
Note: You will not have a windows interface like in the Linux lab, just the terminal window.
Note: You will be on your own. We won’t be discussing remote access in class, and you will
need to learn the editors on your own.
For more information on Remote Access or Copying Files from a remote machine to your linux
accounts see SSH in the linux tutorial.
