Nearly 200 volunteers work in the Arizona heat to paint almost 62,000 square feet of existing
buildings on the Roadrunner Elementary School campus.
The painting project took less than three hours and involved coating almost 62,000 square feet of
existing buildings on the site, event organizers said. Zero-VOC paints from AkzoNobel’s Glidden
Professional brand were used.
Glidden Professional expert painters also helped in the effort, GSHS said.
The existing buildings will now match the new “Safari” schoolhouse under construction on the campus,
GSHS said. The Safari schoolhouse is one of the many LEED-certified designed green schools the
group plans to “gift” to low-income public schools across the U.S.
“The makeover of Roadrunner Elementary School and the new schoolhouse will transform the campus
into an environmentally-friendly showcase,” GSHS said.

detectors, and energy-management systems.

Volunteers from Glidden Professional prep paint supplies.
GSHS said it plans to have two more “big volunteer days” in June at the Roadrunner Elementary site.
“As always, we welcome any skilled volunteers in the area who would like to take part in this historic
project,” the GSHS said.
Many other GSHS partners helped complete the work, including Alliance Bank of Arizona, American
Express, American Fire Equipment Sales and Service Corp., Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona,
Belgard Hardscapes, City of Phoenix, David Evans & Associates Inc., DeVry University, Empire
Renewable Energy, Hensel Phelps Construction Co., MAGNUM Companies, Stantec, Washington
Elementary School District, and Xerox.
‘Green Ribbon’ School
In addition, the U.S. Department of Education recently named the Roadrunner Elementary School as
one of the 78 “Green Ribbon Schools” in the U.S.; see: Obama Administration Names 78 Schools as
First-Ever U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools.
The federal recognition program honors schools that exercise a comprehensive approach to creating
“green” environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a
high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and
sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy, the agency said.

environments,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
