Nearly 200 volunteers work in the Arizona heat to paint almost 62,000 square feet of existing buildings on the Roadrunner Elementary School campus. The painting project took less than three hours and involved coating almost 62,000 square feet of existing buildings on the site, event organizers said. Zero-VOC paints from AkzoNobel’s Glidden Professional brand were used. Glidden Professional expert painters also helped in the effort, GSHS said. The existing buildings will now match the new “Safari” schoolhouse under construction on the campus, GSHS said. The Safari schoolhouse is one of the many LEED-certified designed green schools the group plans to “gift” to low-income public schools across the U.S. “The makeover of Roadrunner Elementary School and the new schoolhouse will transform the campus into an environmentally-friendly showcase,” GSHS said. The federal recognition program honors schools that exercise a comprehensive approach to creating “green” environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy, the agency said.
