diaferia gets his 2nd shutout of the season.
Pirates and Mets Split
The Yorktown Pirates split a doubleheader with the Westchester Mets winning the 1st game 1-0 and dropping
the 2nd game 3-2. Jim Webb, making his Pirate debut, made it a memorable one by pitching a no hitter. Webb
had a perfect game going into the top of the 7th and facing the leadoff batter walked him on a 3-2 count, struck
out the next batter and then induced a game ending double play to finish off the masterpiece. The Pirates scored
the only run of the game in the bottom of the 5th courtesy of a Dale Hughes bunt that was thrown wild by the
pitcher past the first baseman allowing Hughes to get to 2nd base and with 2 out John Boro came up with the
clutch RBI single to give the Pirates the lead and the victory in this great pitching duel. Andy DiNardo was the
Pirate starter the 2nd game and pitched 6 innings, allowing only 1 run, yet departed in a tie game into the top of
the 7th when the Pirates scored the go ahead run taking a 2-1 lead. However this lead was short lived as the
Mets rallied in the bottom of the 7th by scoring 2 runs and taking the victory. Leading the Pirates at bat were
Dale Hughes (2-3, double, RBI) and Paul Gornie (1-1, double)
Tribe 6 - Yankees 0
Yankees and Tribe lock horns in a tight 1-0 game through into the 4th when Greenwich plates 5 runs to put the
game away. Sean Darling kept the Yankees bats at bay scattering 5 hits, and except for the bottom of the 4th,
Yankees starter Chris Shafer pitched a solid ball game for the pinstripers.
Tribe 14 - Yankees 2
A 4-2 Tribe lead in the 6th balloons into 14-2 victory as Greenwich bats crank out 10 runs in a prolific inning.
Mike Munafo had a huge game both at bat and on the mound for Greenwich.
Game 1: Brewers 11 - Giants 0
Giants manage only one hit by Sean Freytesin in a losing effort. Brewer’s Mike Kammerer kept the Giants at
bay, Chris Presbyto went 3-3 with 2 homeruns, and Brent Kammerer was 2-2 with a walk.
Game 2: Giants 9 - Brewers 7
Giants jump out to a 6-0 lead, but the Brewers bats would wake up in the 4th, plating 5 runs to draw within 1.
After the Giants tack on 1 in the 5th, the Brewers storm back again and tie it in their half of the frame. A very
tense last 2 innings saw the Giants load the bases with 0 outs in the 6th. Brewer reliever Seth Alicea was
brought in to save the inning, and with a drawn in infield, he induced a grounder to 1st with the force play taken
at the plate, struck out the next batter, and then got the 3rd out with a fly ball. However, the Giants would load
the bases with 0 out once again in the 7th. This time Kagan Hudayar, who had pitched earlier tried to save it.
But a broken-bat bloop hit over a drawn in infield would yield the 2 runs that were the difference in the game.
Scott Munz closed the door with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 8th for the Giants.
