Task 3 For Task 3 you will be marked with an effort grade. You may do this task as a group project if you wish but you must let your teacher know who is in your group together. Each member of your group must also play a role which you decide in the task such as organiser or checker. Your Task is to build or design on paper a castle based on what you have learnt in lesson and your own research if you wish. Your budget is 150 shillings. Make a list of items you would like your castle to have and how much you have spent. You do not have to use all your budget. Castle Shopping List You are a Norman baron who has been given some land by King William. Your castle needs to be strong, in case rebels or a rival baron attacks you. You also want it to be comfortable, you are a very important person and will be living there. You never know when the king will visit you! However you only have a limited amount of money so you must choose wisely what you spend it on… BUDGET: 150 Shillings Item Square Keep Barbican Round Towers Cost 15 S 10 S 5 S per Tower What is it? This strong stone building will be at the centre of your castle and the place where most of the people live This stone gatehouse is used to protect the weakest part of the castle – the main entrance. You will need some guards for full protection You can have as many round towers as you want on the curtain (outer) wall of your castle. They strengthen the walls and give your archers useful places to shoot from Curtain Wall Wood: 5 S This surrounds the whole castle and has Stone: 15 a S walkway for your soldiers to patrol Guardhouse 5 S Murder Holes Stables 1 S each 3S A stone guardhouse can stand on its own in your castle courtyard or be attached to your castles keep or wall. It is useful to let some of your soldiers live there and it should be close to where they are going to be needed These holes in your wall allow soldiers to pour boiling oil on to your enemies below! Your knights will need somewhere to keep their horses. You will need to include a groom to look after them. Remember: make sure you do not put your stable somewhere where they can easily catch fire! Moat Drawbridge Portcullis 20 S 1S 2 S each A water filled moat around your castle will be a difficult obstacle for your enemies to cross. It will be even more effective if you buy a drawbridge. A Drawbridge can be raised when the castle is attacked making it hard for enemies to get into your castle These strong iron gates can stop an enemy long enough for your archers to shoot them. Using more than one means you can trap the enemy in a ‘killing ground’ between them. Well 7S Dungeon 4S Armoury 4S A well can be very useful if the enemy tried to starve you out of the castle A dungeon is a useful place to store food – and to imprison people you don’t like! Complete with an armourer – this is where weapons are made and stored Garderobe 4 S each These are medieval toilets! They are small rooms that hang out over the castle walls.
