The Intent:
In keeping with the idea that each member, student, healer, medium and minister

Ethics In Mediumship
The purpose of mediumship is to demonstrate the continuity of life, give
comfort and love, and to deliver peace and hope for the future.
There are two elements for the unfoldment of mediumship. The first is a qualified
teacher, and the second is a responsible medium.
We recognize that mediumship has become more accepted by society, with
media programs featuring specific mediums. We must do our part as well to present
mediumship in a responsible, spiritual manner that reflects integrity.
It has been common practice with spiritual truths for the teacher to personally
hand down the wisdom, knowledge and spiritual expertise to students. While books are
important, nothing can take the place of the teacher who shares his/her expertise,
experiences and wisdom, thus guiding the student from a solid foundation. Developing
an understanding of the Natural Laws that govern communication is essential. In order
to attune with Spirit, it is necessary to cooperate with Natural Laws.
A medium is a transmitter, a conduit between the sender and receiver. One
could define attunement as a heightened state of awareness to the spiritual and,
specifically, to the indwelling spirit and omnipresent spirit outwardly. The more
pronounced the attunement is, the better the effectiveness of the mediumship.
Mediums are cautioned against self-aggrandizement, sensationalism, seeking
recognition for vast material gain and developing inflated egos. All of this does not
reflect well on the religion of Spiritualism, nor does it demonstrate integrity. We must
remember that Natural Law will boomerang back upon those who behave improperly
and without respect to spirituality. The gifts of mediumship should be used for the
highest spiritual intent and the uplifting of the seeker, not to personally benefit the
medium.
It cannot be overly emphasized that there is a grave responsibility in the
practice of mediumship. Mediumship should be viewed with reverence, sincerity
of purpose and honesty. Integrity is paramount because a medium frequently
holds influence upon another person’s life
and never should view this
mediumistic gift as control or power over another.
Mediumship and the Client
The medium and client work in tandem during a reading. One delivers the
message from spirit while the other should be open in order to accept/interpret what is
received. It is common for a client to have questions, so they are to be anticipated. It
may be wise to suggest that the client has freedom of choice.
Professional Considerations
Return phone calls for appointments
Be on time
Provide a comfortable (professional) atmosphere
Dress decently
Be careful with fragrance
1
Honesty
Honesty is paramount in the medium – client relationship.
Do not promise what you cannot deliver, such as guaranteeing to communicate
with a spirit loved one.
Be honest with what makes you uncomfortable: two in a reading, group
readings, a partner listening or children present.
If you aren’t receiving information/communication for the client, tell them so. If
you’re ‘off’ that day, say so and conclude the reading.
Challenges
Occasionally mediums have difficulty with a reading. He/she may not be
receiving answers, spirit, or a client is disagreeing with everything said. It is strongly
advised to cease the reading and hand the client a program, suggesting they contact
another medium. Directing the client to the bookstore to select another medium is also
advised. This reading isn’t meant to be. In such an event, always be willing to refund
the donation or stress there is no fee. It is suggested that the donation is exchanged at
the conclusion of the reading.
Do not argue with the client. This person may not be ready to hear what you
have to say at this time in their life. Encourage them to take the information and reflect
on it at a later time.
NEVER predict death. Reword or rework what you see or feel. For instance,
give suggestions for spending more time together, being more loving to the person;
seeing a doctor; getting insurance in order, etc. (Let us remember, Spirit may not be
wrong, but WE may not interpret correctly. No one wants to convey a message that will
bring anguish to the client due to our misinterpretation.)
Exercise caution regarding interpersonal relationships of the client, such as
divorce. It would be appropriate to suggest books to guide them and/or counseling.
This is a professional relationship you are establishing, so it is necessary to
establish clear boundaries for appropriate behavior.
Readings are confidential. Do not discuss readings with other people. Please
remember the following:
Your performance will reflect upon the reputation of all of the mediums in
Cassadaga and the SCSCMA.
In our litigious society, caution must be exercised with a student of the opposite gender
(and same sex). Appropriateness should be considered when alone with a student. Listen to
your intuition.

Student Ethics
The purpose of mediumship is to demonstrate the continuity of life, give

important, nothing can take the place of the teacher who shares his/her expertise,
experiences and wisdom, thus guiding the student from a solid foundation.
Developing an understanding of the Natural Laws that govern communication is
essential. In order to open up our beings to dimensions beyond our earthly existence, it
is necessary to cooperate with Natural Laws.
One must attune oneself to the Infinite Intelligence in order to be an open
channel through which pure communication is received. A teacher will instruct the
student in the proper preparation for being a clear channel of Spirit communications.
Without proper instruction of awareness and attunement, the student will not be able to
succinctly receive.
It must be stressed that highly developed spirits absolutely do not control a
medium’s body, mind and emotions, nor do these spirits in any way control a client.
The element of free will is always at play. Spirits direct a medium in a loving manner
that conveys choice to the client.
Students are strongly discouraged from using mind altering drugs or hypnosis in
the misguided thought to enhance development or the experience. Additionally, such
behavior could lead to removal from the student program.
Honor Teachers and Students
Project a positive attitude about the student program. Do not bad mouth
teachers to other students and do not gossip about other students to other people. If
you are having difficulties with a teacher or student, talk to your Certifying Evaluator. If
that is the person you are having difficulty with, take your problem to the Certification
Committee.
