Our Whole School Newsletter
Dear Family
WELL DONE to our football
teams – we won two out of our
three matches this week and
demonstrated an excellent
team spirit – well done!
TODAY we welcomed two
paper craft experts into school
to give a demonstration to the
whole school – the children
– and adults present – loved
seeing what amazing things
could be made from paper.
The men will be back on
Sunday – if any child wishes to
have a go themselves and buy
the book (10AED) or book with
paper (20 AED) they can do so
on Sunday – this is a one day
only opportunity!
TRIPS AND VISITS are an
important way of making the
curriculum become alive – this
week, as well as meetings for
families about the Y4 and Y5
residential trips next term,
we have taken 150 children to
the Abu Dhabi Live exhibition
to learn about keeping fit and
healthy and our very youngest
children have been to learn
about the culture and heritage
of the UAE at the heritage
village. It is a great time of
year to be out and about – with
many more trips planned for
the coming weeks.
AL MUNA PRIMARY
SCHOOL
ABU DHABI
SPEAKING OF UAE culture
and heritage – remember two
big events coming up soon.
Our National day celebration
in school (full details next
week in the newsletter)
and the Aldar Academies
National day celebration on
26th November at 6.00 at
Zayed Sports City – in the big
football stadium. If your child
has expressed an interest in
performing they will bring a
letter home today with a slip
to be handed directly to me
on Sunday morning. Children
taking part will have a couple
of rehearsals in school in
the coming days with Mrs
Priestley, myself and some
professional choreographers.
Full details are in the letter.
We would like every Al Muna
child to attend – FS children
sitting with their families –
performers on the stage and
other children sitting together
to sing and maybe even to be
on the Al Muna Float! It looks
like it will be a spectacular
event with a fantastic
fireworks display at the end!
meet her – please can I ask
that we give her a couple of
weeks to settle in and get on
with what is really important
– learning how A Muna works
and ensuring she delivers
good lessons and helps every
child make as much progress
as possible.
ARABIC – the teaching of
Arabic is a very important part
of our work. We appointed four
teachers many months ago
to start with us in September.
One – Mrs Rana Al Halabi
in FS – arrived and is – as
we all know – doing a great
job. For reasons beyond our
control – two teachers did not
arrive and we were lucky to
gain the services of Ms Reba
and Mr Reda who are both
setting well. Many families will
know that our fourth teacher
– again due to circumstances
beyond our control – arrived
later then all of us would had
wanted. Miss Sara has now
left our school and the UAE.
This week we interviewed for a
replacement and I am pleased
to announce that we have
appointed Mrs Bouthaina Abu
Shammala. We know this has
been an unsettling time for the
children – but we are pleased
to have been able to appoint
an experienced teacher. She
knows that her brief is to work
hard to help the children make
as much progress as possible.
Naturally families want to
AL MUNA teachers are
brilliant. I am delighted that
ADEC recently invited Miss
Corr Mrs Langton and Miss
Skinner to talk to other
teachers in Al Ain about our
innovative desert schools
project – we are proud that
our excellent work is being
recognised by ADEC>
AFTER National day we will
be getting ready for our
Winter Souk Mr Howsen
ATTENDANCE
Well done to Bulbuls with
98.57 attendance last week.
Nov 2014
ISSUE NO.10
On Wednesday the 10th of December 2014, we will be having our
Winter Souk.
The Souk hours will be from 2:00 – to 3:30pm in the School ,
If you would like to book a table at a cost of 100 Dhs for that
day, please contact me on 050 444 83 92 or send via the email
[email protected] or [email protected]
We need to know how many tables you might need for that day
to help us set the plan in advance.
Table set up will be from 12.30pm in the school. You will find
your name on your table/s. I will be there to help out on the day.
As part of our Winter Souk activities, Friends of Almuna, (FOAM
) will be holding a raffle on the day, tickets for the raffle will
be sold and the proceeds will go to a Charity chosen by the
Children at the school, so if you would like to purchase tickets or
donate a raffle prize that would be much appreciated!!
I do hope you can support us on this occasion.

Football Match Report:
News from Mr
Duggan
Our first match was against
Al Mushrif. We knew it was a
tough match since we played
them. At first half we ended
with a score of 3-1. We already
predicted this. Our class of play
was amazing. Especially the
teamwork between Mahmood
and Ali. The second half was
much better. Saif and Zayed
were of great help keeping the
ball in play. The defenders did
the right things and stopped
the danger. Khalid was much
better, as all saves really saved
us from get and helped us to
achieve a better score. The
final score was 4-2 and the win
was to Mushrif. One goal to Ali
and one goal to Mahmood. We
were happy with the result as
everybody put great effort.
Soon after we faced ADGS.
We builded our confidence
and came with an exceptional
result and a hat-trick. The
kick of started and after few
minutes ADGS were in the lead.
Then yet again they scored 2-0.
We all still had hope in us that
we could win. Few minutes
later we scored. Yes! Our top
goal scorer Mahmood had
striked again. Mahmood scored
another one and we equalized.
What a wonderful half volley.
The birthday boy (Ali Elshrif)
was happy as he scored the
third goal and led Al Muna to
the lead. Half time. To end the
match Mahmood scored a goal
as he scored his hat trick. The
match was over and everybody
was happy. Group photo time
and soon all the squad left.

ADISSA Football League Round
4:
U9s Al Muna 3 – Al Mushrif 1
U9s had fantastic result
against Mushrif on Monday
afternoon. The Muna boys were
really focused and attacked
Mushrif from the start. Their
persistence paid off when Sami
Khedair came off the right
wing and slotted the ball coolly
past the oncoming Mushrif
goal keeper. The Muna boys
played some very attractive
attacking football and scored
their second just before
half-time, when Franklin
Saunders danced his way
around the Mushrif defence
and planted the ball firmly
past the outstretched arm of
the Mushrif keeper. Opposition
teams are struggling to cope
with Frankin’s scoring prowess
and it shows with five goals
to his name this season.
Muna rounded off the scoring
in the second half, with an
outstanding half-volley from
distance from Mohammed Al
Romaithi.
Riyad Hashem and Walter
Moloney formed a formidable
partnership in defence,
Mohammed Al Romaithi
worked tirelessly throughout,
his effort was rewarded with a
superb goal. Mushrif struggled
to cope with Sami Khedair on
the wing who gave an excellent
defensive & attacking display.
We are delighted for parents
to spectate during fixtures,
however, please remember that
only positive feedback from the
sideline is communicated and
try and refrain from ‘coaching’
your child, this often confuses
the children because there is
contradictory feedback coming
from coaches and then the
parent. Please refer to Al Muna
ECAs Code of Conduct for any
clarification needed regarding
parent conduct during fixtures.

SWIMMING DURING COOLER
WEATHER
Please note that the school
pool is heated to a maximum of
32 degrees and if for any reason
the pool is not at the correct
temperature or the weather is
unusually cold, lessons will be
cancelled.
We obviously don’t want to
discourage children from
swimming by subjecting them
to unpleasant conditions.
Swimming is a compulsory part
of our curriculum and to ensure
the greatest possible progress,
regular attendance is required.
We would advise that your
child brings an extra towel and
maybe a school sweatshirt on
swimming days. FS2 & Year
1 children may find a toweling
robe very useful when walking
to and from the pool.
Thank you for your cooperation
on these matters. We wish to
make swimming enjoyable as
possible for all children.
Please remember that children
should wear the Al Muna
swim kit and have their own
swimming cap.

News from Mrs Partridge
On Wednesday 5th November a team of 30 swimmers headed to Al Ain International School for
an all Aldar Schools Swim Meet Competition. Schools which entered were Al Ain, The Pearl, Al
Yasmina, Al Mushrif & Al Muna. It was a very competitive meet and the Al Muna team showed
no mercy to their fellow opposition! Throughout the event, Al Muna behaved brilliantly and did
not disappoint in their team and individual events. I am so very proud of each and every one
of them and a special ‘well done’ to Willa Khwaja & Hamdan Al Tamimi who received a medal
for their outstanding performance and team work. Also, a great big thank you to all staff and
parents who helped a this event!

A Note from Mr
Picton
Voice of Al Muna!
It has been a fantastic week at
Al Muna for Music! Round 1
of the Talent Show went ahead
successfully in classrooms.
Students got a chance to
show their talents to their
classmates, and then all voted
on one act to go through to
Round 2 (in 2 weeks time).
Some of the acts were shown
in the music room – I saw
some amazing magic tricks,
incredible musicians, rhythmic
drumming and expressive
dances. One of the acts that
didn’t get through to Round
2 so impressed Mr Howsen
that he invited them to be a
surprise act in the talent show.
You’ll have to wait till the 18th
December to find out who!
This week’s top blogger for
telling us what the most amazing
thing is that he has ever seen.
This week we have had whole
school singing assemblies to
teach the pupils songs for the
National Day celebrations. All
Aldar schools are learning
the same 5 songs (Pearl –
Katy Perry, Good Life – One
Republic (Chorus only),
Because you loved me –
Celine Dion, When I grow Up
– Matilda Musical, National
Anthem). Details of this
exciting event will follow, but it
involves all the schools singing
together.

The most amazing thing was
the Burj Khalifa water show.
The water was dancing with the
music like a real person and
the lights in Burj Khalifa were
flashing really nice

Dear Families
I am going to write a short piece
for the newsletter each week
which will cover many childhood
illnesses and ailments.
This week’s topic is Molluscum
Contagisum.
MC is a skin virus that can affect
everyone but is most common
in children aged between 1 – 4
Each small, pink/white wart/
spot typically lasts 6 – 12 weeks
but it can take up to 18 months
for your body to be completely
clear of the virus.
It is not a serious condition but
more of annoyance, in most
cases mild itching is the only
problem. Parents are usually
bothered more by MC than the
child!
Once you have had MC you are
usually immune.
Although it is contagious it is
in fact difficult to contract and
most people are immune.
The best way to avoid the
spread of MC is not to share
towels and flannels – which
we do not do at school and
communal toys should be
washed regularly – which we do
at school.
I have attached the lyrics to
the songs so you can practice
along with your child. NOTE –
some of the lyrics have been
changed.
Bursting the spots can cause
the MC to spread. If your child
is scratching an anti-histamine
will give relief which will in turn
reduce the potential spread.
Don’t worry, we are not
expecting every child to learn
every word!!!! I’ve highlighted
the main parts of each song.
All the songs are available on
youtube.
There is no convincing evidence
that any treatment works and
treatment should always be
avoided in children as it can
be painful and there is a high
chance of scarring.
Patient UK is an excellent
evidence based website
which discusses all medical
complaints, why we get them
and how to treat them.

This week’s story was ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’. Oliver really liked
‘blackcurrant’ juice, made using blackcurrants from his Grandpa’s
garden, so the children tried a range of juices to see which was
their favourite. You might even have children asking for you to buy
‘grapefruit’, ‘guava’ or ‘pomegranate’ juice whilst shopping! They
also learned about where different fruits grow and how they don’t just
magically appear in the supermarkets! The children enjoyed singing
this week’s number song about the ripe plums falling off the tree and
making their very own fruit salad. They were delicious! However, the
highlight of the week was their very first Al Muna trip to the Heritage
Village. The children had lots of fun and were so well behaved. They
did themselves and Al Muna proud! Well done and have a well-earned
rest over the weekend!
FS2
This very week we had an
extra special treat. We were
able to watch a funny and
entertaining production of
Aladdin in our own gym hall.
We have completed work
based on Aladdin and have
created amazing art based on
the production. Did you know
Aladdin had 3 wishes to make?
We thought about what we
would wish for and wrote them
down. What would you wish
for?
After working on Aladdin we
went back to our Jungle topic.
We have been studying animals
and their behaviour. We have
used alliteration to describe
them such as ‘leaping lion’ and
hot seating to question each
other in the role of a character.
In maths we have been
learning to count to 10 in 2s.
We know that we need to add 2
each time when we do this. We
have used games, songs and
number lines to help us learn
to do this. Some of us can even
count to 20!

Year 1 and Year 2
This week we have been thinking about genies and wishes and
magic lamps? I wonder if you recognise the story. Yes, we were lucky
enough to attend the theatre production of Aladdin in our very own
school. The children were delighted to see live actors singing and
dancing with a wonderful stage set to enhance their performances.
It inspired us to create magic carpets of our own and to talk about
travelling on a magic carpet to far off places and unknown lands.
We even made our own magic lamps out of pottery. In mathematics
we have been working on positional language. Please do help your
child by practising left and right whenever you can. Challenge them
to walk on the right, raise their left elbow and anything else you can
think of!
Year 2
This week has been an
extremely exciting week. Year 2
were given a problem to solve.
The Genie had lost his bag of
magical things so we had to
decide what we could make to
help him! We decided to design
and make our own magic
carpets. We are beginning
the design process this week.
We had a brilliant time at the
Aladdin show and we are using
this to give us ideas in our
writing! We are looking forward
to making our magic carpets
next week! Round 1 of the talent
show has also taken place in
the classes. It has been great
seeing all the different talents
our classes have.

Year 3 and Year 4
Year 3
As our exciting trip to Dubai approaches, year 3 have been finding
out lots about the Burj Khalifa. We’ve been researching and writing
non-fiction texts that many magazines would be happy to publish!
In math, we’ve been producing bar graphs and pictographs to
show information we have collected through surveys of the school.
More magnets in science this week - we’ve been learning all about
what magnets do and discussing the scientific vocabulary used to
describe them.
Year 4
To prepare ourselves for the eagerly awaited production of
Aladdin we started our week by looking at the story. We explored
the language features and used role play to empathise with the
different characters. The Aladdin performance on Monday was
everything we hoped it would be and we loved every minute. It was a
great stimulus for the excellent literacy work we have done for the
rest of the week. We have focused on correctly using speech marks
in our stories which has now, much to our teachers’ delight, greatly
improved! We have also been completing ‘Maths Missions’ based on
Aladdin. This involved using and applying skills that we have learnt
so far this year to solve challenges. We have to communicate and
explain our ideas and work with a partner to solve the task. Overall,
another fantastic week in Year 4. Well done everyone!
Here we are finding the perimeter of different magic carpets.

Year 5 and Year 6
This week we have been doing lots of work in preparation for watching
the amazing performance of Aladdin. In literacy we read different
versions and discussed the characters and events of the story.
In science we performed an exciting experiment to see if gases are
made during chemical reactions.
We also took part in Abu Dhabi Alive at the Sheikh Zayed Sports Centre.
We had the opportunity to take place in various sessions and workshops
to help up see healthy living and the things that we can do to be more
active and healthy.
Next week on Wednesday 19th November year 5 will be going to the
Emirates Park Zoo. If you would like your child to attend but haven’t
already sent the permission slip with 80AED into school please send
them in as soon as possible. The closing date for these slips is on
Sunday 16th November.
Year 6
This week the children in Year 6 have been fortunate enough to watch
the amazing theatre performance of Aladdin! In conjunction with the
performance, we have been looking at the features of playscripts and
the similarities and differences between playscripts and narratives.
Possibly the most interesting follow-up work we did was thinking
about which three wishes we would ask a genie to grant us if we had
a magic lamp! There were lots of children wishing to be football stars,
professional gamers, to own pets, to be millionaires and some simply
wishing for health and happiness. In maths we have been exploring
3D shapes and data handling; we hope that this work will continue to
support us as we draw nearer to our chocolate making and selling.
We have been carrying on with our learning in science by focusing on
‘Light’. Specifically we have been exploring shadows. Teachers and
children have had a tough time voting for acts to perform in ‘Al Muna’s
Got Talent’! Not surprisingly, we have a lot of very talented students
who can sing, dance and entertain! We are all looking forward to the
final show!
