Learning Log
Homework activities cover a range of learning styles and subject matter. The grid below shows activities around the topic of “Wriggle and Crawl”. Children
can also direct their own activities and ideas about the topic into the learning log. Homework is due back during week beginning Monday 27th March.
Key Skills children will be developing:
Research: Children understand that they can find a range of information from the internet and other sources.
Literacy: Using description and detail – noun phrases, adjectives and adverbs
Mathematics: Mental arithmetic skills, weighing and graph making and using graphs to answer questions; telling the time to 5 minute intervals (twenty past
three for example)
Science: Identifying and naming insects and their body parts, investigating and using observational skills.
Creative: Using a wide range of art and design techniques creatively to make products.



Creative Writing
Use some old boxes, bottles and materials to
make some creepy crawlies.
Create your own poster describing a mini-beast
you really like. Draw it, describe it…



Fun Maths





Write a list of adjectives to describe what
spiders look like; write a list of verbs to
describe what spiders do. Can you make
interesting sentences about spiders?
Write a letter to Miss Muffet and explain
why she shouldn’t be scared of spiders.
In ‘James and the giant peach’, the main
characters are insects. Can you write
detailed descriptions of them?
Wider World
Practise number bonds to 10, 20, 100.

Weigh different objects and write them down in
order from lightest to heaviest
Draw a bar chart to show how many insects you
found on your mini-beast hunt. Which was the
most popular?
Practise your 2X, 5X, 10X tables
Tell the time when carrying out different
activities at home.
Go on a min-beast hunt with your family, to the
local park or in your garden. Take photos or
draw any mini-beasts you find. See how many
different ones you can find!
Research


Go to the library and read stories, poems or
non-fiction books on mini-beasts. Write a
review of your favourite one, saying why…
Use the internet to find out about a weird and
wonderful mini-beast or look in books to find
out more information about it. Write 5 (or
more!) interesting facts.
Be a Scientist


Can you make your own Worm Hotel? With a
grown-up, read and follow the instructions to
make a Worm Hotel. Take photos and write
about what you see happening.
Draw a large picture of an insect and draw and
label its main features.
