Opened in 1982 as the UK’s first media centre, Watershed has developed an excellent reputation for bringing the best in world cinema to Bristol, attracting annual audiences of over 119,000. His main project is New Horizons of Film Education which is a kind of nation‐wide art‐house cinemas network based on a common educational programming for schools. The programme is aimed to all age categories between 7 and 19 years old. New Horizons Association was created in 2003 to organize New Horizons International Film Festival – the biggest film festival in Poland which main competition is aimed to directors who explores new horizons in film language, expression and storytelling. Maciej was nominated to the Warsaw cultural award in the category Person of the Year. www.nowehoryzonty.pl MATHIAS HOLZ is a programmer for Swedish exhibitor Folkets Hus och Parker, a position he has held for 7 years. His responsibility includes programming inner city art houses in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Helsingborg, as well as rural commercial cinemas and community center art houses. He also manages international contacts with the likes of Europa Cinemas and works with development projects regarding digital transition, live screenings and alternative content. Before his current position he worked as a booker for Swedish distributor Triangelfilm. His eclectic and incomplete academic career includes university studies in cultural history, drama and film. He also attended film school. GENERAL POLICY Our cinema’s main policy is based on the following points:  Quality and proximity  Being an Art‐house cinema  Developing a cinema education program towards schools and associations  Offering cinema to the underprivileged  Creating a real identity through film programming, by screening unique films in Belgium, especially documentaries  Developing partnerships in the interest of our film policy: festivals, cine clubs, premiere, associative partnerships… The Aventure was born 4 years ago. The first thing to do, in such a competitive area in the centre of Brussels, was to find a position in terms of programming. We decided to go and look for alternatives to classic distributors. We are now the only cinema in Belgium screening small productions, especially documentaries, which even have no distributor. The audience is following, but screening these productions requires much more work than classic films on the usual “network” (debates, special screenings, première, communication). We thus defend art‐house cinema, original version for films, long length programming (Searching for Sugar Man has now been screened for over 70 weeks in our cinema) and of course European productions. As already told, we try to offer more and more screenings for schools and associations around the different films we have. JEROME BRANDERS I was born in Cameroun in 1980 and I arrived in Belgium for my studies in 1997. I studied the political sciences (international relations) and a master in anthropology. During these 7 years, it is probably important to notice that i worked as a student in UGC. With first experiences in the humanitarian, then in an Art Gallery, I finally began in cinema Aventure when it reopened in 2010. I found there the opportunity to learn new skills in a very interesting area and took up the challenge to make the Aventure going better! It is now 3 years that the “Aventure” goes on. YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY Cinema House has a tradition in working with the young audience, mostly high school and university students. For five years, the cinema organizes thematic seminars (discussion club) where famous Bulgarian personalities present important films from the current repertoire in Bulgaria, as well as titles from the Sofia Film Fest program. The program is implemented by the Ministry of Education and with the active assistance of the Sofia Municipality, the National Film Centre as well as the cultural representations of the embassies. During last year’s autumn we organized a thematic programme "World of Cinema" together with the U.S. Embassy, which introduced iconic films of American silent comedy and gangster movies from the 30s. Currently, besides the usual student programmes, the Cinema House directs its efforts to the youngest viewers (4‐10 years old). DEYAN STATULOV I was born on August 4, 1973 in the town of Ihtiman. I graduated from National Academy of Cinema and Theatre in "Television, film studies and drama." As a student I started working as an usher at the Cinema House. 20 years later, since September 2013, I have become its programme director. I have written and edited numerous TV shows. I was a director of the International Student Film Festival ('98, '99 , I have been part of the team of “Music Film Festival”, "Monty Python Fest”, "SIFF”, member of expert committees by the BNT (Bulgarian National Television) and the National Film Centre. I am also a Film observer for the morning show "Hi, Bulgaria” by NOVA television, a Chief Editor of the “Festival Journal" of Sofia International Film Festival. I am currently working on a PhD in the Institute of Art Studies by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. GENERAL POLICY Euro Cinema is part of Europa Cinema’s Network since 2008. For the period of its Europa Cinema’s membership – 2008‐2012 Euro Cinema has held 15 849 screenings of 1 526 films that have been attended by 76 568 inhabitants of Sofia, 4 267 of which were young people coming through an educational program or a scholar partnership. For 2013 the numbers are 4365 screenings of 362 films and 21 796 admissions. Those figures may seem low, but given the small size of the 2 screens (84 and 20 seats), considering the fact that an average 65% of the screenings are European movies and the programing is entirely dedicated to high‐quality auteur films, you can see how strong the cinema’s identity is in Sofia’s cultural landscape. The mission of Euro Cinema aims to provide a diverse weekly and festival programming focusing on Bulgarian and European films. Along with the partnership and participation of Euro Cinema in the most popular and smaller film festivals there are special activities aimed at young audience, disabled people, ethnic minorities and others dedicated to documentary and music genre. PETER TODOROV has been involved with Bulgaria Cinema Market for the last fifteen years. He started as a movie distributor and worked with worldwide known companies like Walt Disney International, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Buena Vista International and Miramax International. Three years after the beginning of his career, he decided to reposition himself as a manager of the first Bulgarian multiplex – United Cinema. After five successful years he became a manager in one of the biggest cinema in Sofia – Cineplex, member of Europa Cinema’s Network. During these years Peter Todorov supported actively the distribution of Bulgarian and European movies like Eastern Plays, The Island, 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days and many others. He is also the owner of a small distribution company, called Euro Films Ltd. YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY Our policy of involving young people excludes organizing target audience through a direct contact with particular schools and universities. Our common practice is to popularize the event through partners from the foreign cultural institutes using their regular community and well developed audience – internet users, language courses students, or their contacts with the language departments of Bulgarian universities. As an exception, we could mention our good collaboration and practice with the Spanish Embassy in organizing the Spanish Language Cinema Week. The audience incorporates students from the Spanish language schools, organized by the Embassy themselves. The Spanish Language Cinema Week`s main purpose is of educational nature, together with the popularization of this cinema amidst the young people. Our purpose is, through wide covering and publicity, to arouse the young people interest and curiosity. The decision for entering the cinema hall should be theirs, as well as the choice a film. Our task is to make their access easier through: preferential tickets prices, awards with free tickets, free programmes, leaflets with a wide circulation, available not only at the cinema box‐offices, but at the universities, cultural institutes, cafes, as well. The festival Cinemania, produced by the National Palace of Culture (the institution, which manage Cinema Lumiere), also presents strong children selection within its program. The best live‐action and animated features from last 2‐3 years are presented with dubbing on Bulgarian language, and the Cinema Lumiere is always sold out for these screenings, which brings joy both to the children under 12 and to their parents. OLI GRUEVA graduated German HERMINA AZARIAN is an expert of philology and Film studies. She visual and performing arts by the worked many years in the Foreign National Palace of Culture since Trade Department "Bulgariafilm", 1987. She organizes the Cinemania the National Council for Television International Film Panorama since and Radio. She was a Director of 1991 and the Annual International the International Department of the BNT Art Festival “Salon des Arts”, since 1995. YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY The “trade mark” of Cinema Odeon are the screenings of Bulgarian classics ‐ free for students. Currently we developed these activities, adding screenings of classic Bulgarian animations, which have free entrance not only for children, but also for their parents. VLADIMIR TRIFONOV has 20 years of experience in film programming. He has organized many retrospective of classic directors ‐ Fellini, Truffaut, Hitchcock, Antonioni, etc. He has been in charge of programming of leading Bulgarian art‐house theater ‐ Cinema House, for 5 1/2 years. For last 10 years he is programmer of the oldest and most popular Bulgarian film event ‐ Cinemania Fest (now in its 27th year). YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY Undoubtedly, attracting and educating the young audience to love European cinema is amongst our greatest aims. Reduced ticket prices for children and students, sometimes free screenings, is a really efficient step, especially in a country with great economic difficulties such as Bulgaria. We guarantee European titles for our regular weekend children's screenings, knowing how important it is to make youngsters at the earliest age acquainted with their values. The best film lessons are most often not learned in school (where it may be seen as an obligation) but when the child freely choose to go to the cinema with a parent or a friend, and thus it becomes an event. The children's section of the World Festival of Animated Films precisely creates special festival events. A workshop lead by world known masters teaches children (age 5‐15) how to make animated films. The participants are chosen by competition and their film is screened at the Official Closing. Another workshop gathers students from specialized schools all over the world to create their own common work for the festival week. Over the last four years we created a special program, The Other Cinema, showing masterpieces of the 20th century “when cinema wanted to be an art” with commentary from a well‐known Bulgarian film critic before each screening, helping young people to understand both the ideas and the language of the film classics. The success of this program is really impressive. Last year, we started involving university and high school students, in the organization of International Film Festival LOVE IS FOLLY as volunteers. They liked it so much, that we have, 4 months before the festival, a significant number of candidates waiting to open the program again. At present, one or two of them will organize amongst the local art or design students a competition and an exhibition of drawings on the Love Is Folly theme at the end of March. RUMYANA POPOVA graduated in 1981 from the National Academy of Theatre and Cinema (Sofia), with a specialty in History and Theory of Cinema. Until 1987 she worked as a journalist in the Cultural Department of the Varna newspaper “Narodno delo”. She is a member of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists. Since 1987 she has been responsible for film programming at Festival and Congress Centre Varna and she has been its International and Cultural Department manager since 2001.

GENERAL POLICY As a private owned film screening company, with over then 100 years of tradition, our genaral mission is to ensure innovative, diverse film programming, in the area where there are few alternatives mostly oriented to the mainstream. The concept of audience development has redefined in past two years and related to the applicable aspects of marketing and education from keeping the exsiting audience providing value added programms to develop knowledge and better understanding of film and making them attend more often to bringing and to the programme/venue people who have not attended before through the cultural diversity and social inclusion. YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY In our programme policy we do cooperate with schools and institutions, teachers, professors and students, NGO's and Institutes at all levels to provide a film education as a positive, rewarding and vital element of ensuring independent film culture for younger audiences and develops further interest in film in audiences of all ages. Thematic programming, value added programmes (pop‐rock concerts, festivals, tourism routes, gastronomy etc.) and projects we create, are all about to start a conversation within an audience through placing specific films in the context of other titles or different art feature dealing with similar ideas but in different and more modern ways which are of equal importance or enjoyment which a casual filmgoer is simply not aware of. MARIJANA BOSNJAK Croatian entrepreneur, with double master degree in social sciences‐ tourism and risk and crisis management, and bachelor degree in economy and civil engineering, experienced on leading positions in different industries. Always prepared to take on a challenge, implement changes and accept a risk, she dedicates her professional career to consulting and her biggest challenges are companies which are "on the edge". Some of those are Osijek cinemas established in 1901. She is a successful author of many cultural projects, entrepreneur and scientist, always ready and willing to learn new things and develop new skills and progress. Being a passionate lover of arthouse cinema, she is also programme creator, project manager, head of strategic and marketing planning at Kinematografi Osijek in Osijek, a multidisciplinary arts institution offering film, theatre and visual arts, since 2007. YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY Cinema Valli and Pula Film Festival are managed by the same organization and theirs projects constantly complement each other. In 2008, during its 55th edition, Pula Film Festival launched Pulica. This is a program for children, introducing films that would otherwise never reach Croatian audience and setting up workshops that reveal the ‘secrets’ of film making. The Festival embraces ECFA’s ideology that children and the young are not only our future but also our present with great emotional, cultural and material needs. This made us realize that we should provide throughout the whole year. This led into the development of the “Film in School” project within Cinema Valli. Since 2009 the ‘’Film in school” project is organizing educational cycles throughout the school year. The film programme for pupils is adjusted to the regular school curriculum. Besides learning about film language and film as a form of art, topics such as history, literature, ecology and many other are discussed through the medium of film. Screenings are introduced and discussed by film professionals. Printed material is handed out to teachers in order to assist them in discussing the films in school. Furthermore in 2010 the “Film Alphabet” project was launched within the “Film in School” project in order to give teachers opportunity to broaden their film knowledge. Over the course of several years a different segment (film language; film history part I & II) is discussed twice a month, from October to April. We organize special birthday parties for 7‐12 year old children, which gives us the opportunity to educate them in a less formal environment and develop the future cinephile audience. ZELJKA FERENCIC She was born in 1986 in the Adriatic town of Pula, Croatia. She graduated in MA World and national history with her thesis on the use of movies in history and received the Rector’s award. In 2014 she became a certified teacher. She is now exploring the creative possibilities of using film in the classrooms within the educational curriculum. She is coordinator of the project ‘’Film in school’’ by Cinema Valli and author of educational materials for teachers and schoolchildren. In addition, she was a supervisor of the kids film programme during the Pula Film festival. We communicate every events in the regional press, radio, regional TV and share on our websites andsocial networks. Last year we invited students to get involved in the project Wanted for young DJ´s, VJ´s and artists. But the project wasn´t very successful – for the lack of money we had – but this is mothing I would like to try again. ILONA MACHOVA I was born in 1979. I have been a loyal visitor of our movie theatre since I was two years old but I could not imagine that someday l would become an employee of the cinema. Gros Plan association is in charge of the programming and of the organization of the activities for the cinema. Our principal aim is to promote cinema in all its forms presenting a wide range of high quality films from all over the world: new releases, classics, experimental films, animations, documentaries, short films etc. Our program is combined with a big support work through activities organized on films such as cinema classes, practical workshops, debates etc. As regards our general public a monthly program is published to present the films of the month and the activities organized around the films. Events with directors, film critics, cinema professionals, previews are regularly set up in partnership with other cultural organizations. YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY As regards our young audience a special program called “La tête qui tourne” is dedicated to children under the age of 14 and their families. The principal aim is to incline young audience towards the art of cinema presenting a large variety of films adapted to different age groups. This program is associated with various activities in and outside the cinema theatre: ciné‐concerts, ciné‐
lecture, workshops, events, meetings etc. A great part of our work is devoted to film education programs turned to schools. Gros Plan is the regional coordinator for “Ecole et cinema” and “Collège au cinema” programs. Several partnerships are also set up with various high schools, community centers and organizations specialized in young people’s activities: screenings, practical workshops, cinema classes etc. are organized to encourage young audience to discover cinema also as a meeting and sharing place. Special prices are reserved to students and children under the age of 14. LARA CORTESI Italian native, I live in France since 2012. I have studied at the University of Bergamo where I earned a Specialist degree in Foreign Languages for International Communication. Since January 2013 I have been working for Gros Plan, a film education association which is in charge of the program and of the cultural entertainment of the Quai Dupleix Cinema in Quimper. I am in charge of events organization at the cinema and of young people’s engagement and communication. The cinemas are lying across a 3 km distance, adjacent to the sides of Lycabettus hill, while the summer cinemas, which are our core business, are the 4 out of 5 such establishments in the center of Athens. Young audiences are a very important percentage of our target group as their number represents also the inhabitants or the visitors of Athens. Our cinemas were maybe the first ones to adopt the European Youth Card when it was launched in Greece, back in 1986, giving the ability to its holders to benefit from reduced admission tickets. In 2012, student tickets accounted for 32,37% of our total admissions. Another opportunity is given by the school district: we have organized extra screenings on Saturday or Sunday mornings in our movie theatre Aavora during the school season. Organization of festivals is another key element: we host an event, there may be a debate around the film. In those cases politically active youngsters are usually attracted by such gatherings. We even had cases of Internet released movies like the Zeitgeist: Moving Forward documentary in 2011. The film was shown 2 days before being available in the web and it sold out with 1000 people watching its 2 screenings. The most important challenge is the lack of any official policy towards young audiences. Tickets prices are burdened with a special tax of 12% that is supposed to develop the Greek cinematography but this diminishes the already slim margin we could make. After long talks and debates the government has decided to reduce this to 6% for summer cinemas. CHRISTOS RINGAS In 1995 I started working in Art‐Cinema Films. My position involves film programming and staff recruitment for the five cinemas and the operation of their bars. Moreover I was responsible for the representation of the French cinema poster company Sonis and the distribution of its products in the Greek market. I also served as the liaison with Europa Cinemas. Finally I closed deals for film re‐releases with UK firm Hollywood Classics. Until now I am responsible for the programming of the family business Theodoros Ringas & Co. Its program is based on European films and on close collaboration with schools, universities, film schools, festivals, seminars, art exhibitions and all kinds of activities, which has resulted in attracting all audiences, especially the young. All these have managed to keep the cinema alive and dynamic despite the great economic crisis in Greece. Mikrokosmos is still the “shelter”, as they call it, of all new Greek directors, always giving them the opportunity to present their works. It also welcomes any person or social group who wishes to link their cultural or professional activity to cinema. ANDREAS SOTIRAKOPOULOS He has created Mikrokosmos. Margarita Macia: [email protected] Access Cinema [Dublin] Karen Wall GENERAL AND YOUNG AUDIENCE POLICY access>CINEMA is the resource organisation for regional cultural cinema exhibition in Ireland. Our organisation provides access to cultural cinema for all communities and audiences. We work with a variety of local organisations to facilitate and increase access to art house and cultural film exhibition, supporting both professional art centres and voluntary film societies. Most members operate as part‐time cultural cinemas venues, i.e. cultural cinema is only part of an overall programme. Our core activity is booking and despatching films, on DCP, 35mm and DVD/Blu Ray on behalf of our member groups but we also offer services in film programming, technical advice, curated & collaborative touring programs and preview screening events. We also run Irelands annual Japanese Film Festival. My role is to facilitate and support our member groups who screen from DVD format. We have 55+ DVD venues. The ZOOM program is an initiative from access CINEMA that screens films to young people ‐ predominantly in the 15 + age group inside and outside of school hours. The main aim is to encourage Young Audiences for art house cinema, to give young people an opportunity to see a wide range of world cinema not usually available in local multiplexes, to develop film appreciation & programming skills and to offer an enjoyable social experience with friends and peer groups. KAREN WALL Karen Wall joined access>CINEMA, the resource organisation for regional cultural cinema exhibition in Ireland as DVD Programme Co‐ordinator in 2012. We sell every year an association card (AMICI DEL CINEMA ‐ Friend of cinema) with this advantage for the owners: a discount (of 40%) in our cinema every day, a discount in our library (of 15% on books and of 10% on dvd and bluray) and restaurant (of 15%), invitation for special event with film directors and much more. Presently we have about 6.000 members. Furthermore, in these years, we have collected a mailing list of 15.000 spectators divided in groups of interests and age. Its architecture was very innovative and it is still one of the most studied and appreciated private owned buildings in Naples. Costa & Scognamiglio are the architects who worked at the project. They refer to De Stijl and to Mondrian’s painting. As a matter of fact one of its principal characteristics are the lively colors used both as for the interior that for the external areas. The Napoli Film Festival was thought to be located here and the original staff of the festival was shared with the cinema. Nowadays it is a meeting place for creative people who find at the Modernissimo their marking point for start‐up new cultural projects on cinema as well as other arts. All the major international cultural institutes present in town work regularly with the Modernissimo organizing movie premiere and cinema festivals. Despite the economic difficulties and the continuous market change the Modernissimo is the only multiscreen cinema at the historic center of Naples thanks to the young, university audience. GERARDO DE VIVO I am the Manager of the last four‐screens cinema theatre left in the historical centre of Naples, Italy. The cinema theatre is named “Modernissimo” and it is part of a larger cinema theatre circuit in the South of Italy, owned by the Company “Stella Film S.r.l.”. My duties consist in the full management of the crew employed and of a very mixed audience made of art‐house films as well as blockbusters addicted people, students and families. Moreover, I strictly collaborate with the main office of the Company as regards to the film programming, the marketing, advertising and training activities, the cooperation with other companies, the organization of film reviews, premieres. We also reserve screenings and meetings for the schools of Naples, and the student have the possibility to meet some director and actor during the film presentation. Usually they have one hour to discuss about the film with the cast. SKALVIJA is the major venue for cinematic events – festivals, meetings with filmmakers, retrospectives, and special screenings. SKALVIJA meets over 58 000 spectators yearly and runs more than 1200 screenings. The cinema is a member of two networks – Europa Cinemas and CICAE. SKALVIJA contributes significantly to the diversity of film culture in Lithuania while organising international events. Vilnius Documentary Film Festival has become an important occasion not only for film‐goers but also for the Lithuanian film industry. SKALVIJA is very keen on providing young people with an opportunity to learn more about film and filmmaking. Education is one of the key activities at SKALVIJA. Since 2007 various film programs for young audiences have been developed. SKALVIJA provides young audiences with three core elements of film education: possibilities to watch great films, to talk about them and to put hands on practical filmmaking. Five year olds may watch films on weekends with their parents, meet film professionals in Q&As, participate in animation workshops (KARLSONO KINAS). Teenagers may join in a school cinema program for watching films, participating in film talks or even in film workshops for classes (MOKAUSI IS KINO). This year we are celebrating its 20th anniversary and 10 years as a member of Europa Cinemas. The cinema has a big hall with 200 seats and three smaller halls, but plans are to develop into a cinema with eight halls. The activity field of Charlie Cinema is very diverse. As a real arthouse we operate in many different fields of art and culture. Quite recently, as part of the celebrations of the Year of Julian Tuwim in Łódź, we placed a 60‐ton locomotive in a crochet‐knitted cover made by Agata "Olek" Oleksiak, a New York artist. Charlie cinema is a model example of a place of cooperation, creation and exchange of ideas. At the cinema’s galery every month there are exhibitions of young artists’ works. Within the cycle “Charlie Outside” the cinema realises different projects all over the country – from outdoor cinema within the Festival of Trailers to music concerts in famous pubs on occassions, such as granting the award of “Złoty Glan”. It can be compared to a culture incubator, where knowledge and experience are combined with passion and animator’s initiative on many levels. It was at Charlie cinema where the first Polish event devoted to the European cinema took place – the European Cinema Forum. Our attention is directed towards the presentation of artistic cinema, first of all European and independent American film productions. The three pillars of our programme activity are: premiere films, festivals and events (including outside the cinema) and film education. For the second time we are conducting the programme “New Horizons of Film Education” in Charlie Cinema – I`m its coordinator. Its main purpose is promoting art cinema, young directors, and attracting locals to see diverse productions, classic or new, from all over the world. NCRR means Romanian and European films, festival films, cult films, special programmes and open air cinema during summer. We frequently give the public the opportunity to meet the cast of the films screened, organizing Q&A's that are very successful. Our mission is to attract young audience to art‐house film, by creating fun and engaging events, with a special selection of films. Festivals, for example, attract a large number of young audiences. Our special project designed to make youngsters familiar with our cinema is called Cinema‐edu. Cinema‐Edu is a project aimed to promote films of cultural value to high‐school students, the quality movies’ audience of tomorrow. These events are the best‐practice examples of alternative educational methods. The selected films succeed in easing in fiery debates and purposeful discussions on social and cultural subjects. We work in partnership with high schools in Bucharest, and invite them to free screenings. This way, many teenagers have the first ever opportunity to see a foreign language film. In 2013, only in Bucharest we had 7.500 teens that were a part of Cinema‐edu. The project was organized in several locations in Bucharest and around the country. We consider it our duty to bring these films in our cinema. While our general programme is mainly attended by students we rely on special events and programme to bring in audiences. We have direct communications with schools and their cultural events management and we have great relationships with our partners that help us in organizing these events. We wish to instill in young audiences respect for the art of film and the joy of seeing a film on the big screen. We have special incentives (like free entrance) for schools that are outside the city. There are no cinemas in the towns around Cluj, therefore, very often Cinema Victoria is the first cinema theatre these children ever step into. We hope to grow together with our audience I currently handle all technical aspects of the cinema, our online communication on social networks and along with the cinema manager I am involved in relations with distributors and choosing the films that we screen. I am seeking to get more involved in our young audience programmes where I could use my training as a filmmaker to better engage with young people interested in film. CĂLIN BOCIAN graduated Cluj‐Napoca's Babeș‐Bolyai University in 2009 with a bachelor degree in film art. His graduation film, the 30 minute mockumentary "Agitation of the mind", was selected for the Local Competition at the Transylvania International Film Festival 2010 and won 3rd prize at the Brașov BEST Film Festival 2010. In 2011 he started working at Cinema Victoria where now works as a programme and projection coordinator. Currently he is working on another mockumentary and is planning to get more involved in Cinema Victoria's engagement with young audiences. In 2008, CID Ptuj took over the management of the local cinema, Mestni kino Ptuj. Our main goal is to bring film culture and education into the local community and to revive the nostalgic little cinema in our historical town centre as a place of culture and community, which continuously provides its audience with a diverse programme of superior quality. Our general programming is focused on screening a higher share of European, third country and independent films, and providing film education for audiences from all age groups by offering accompanying events with select screenings. Due (also) to our youth centre status, a lot of our programming focuses on young audiences. We pay particular attention to film education of children and youth, trying to offer diverse, attractive and memorable film‐based content. When the Municipality handed over the management of the cinema to us, we did not get approval and funding for any additional employees, leaving us seriously understaffed, which to this day remains one of our biggest obstacles. Therefore, my work could be described as “a little bit of everything” – programming, marketing & PR, communication, coordination of YA initiatives, organization of special events, hosting talks with guests, website management and much more. MATEJA LAPUH I was born (1983) and grew up in Ptuj and have fond memories of the time spent in our local cinema, which I now help managing. After graduating in Slovenian language and literature, my professional path took a turn in the direction of arts and culture. Simply by offering a coherent programming schedule, the theatre was full every week‐end and reduced rate day with a more than decent attendance during the rest of the week. People loved cinema and all efforts to offer the best were rewarded on a weekly basis. In 1996 the Cines Broadway followed the same road to success. Times have changed. We still offer the best program, a mixture of Art House, Independent and Blockbusters. Our cinemas are equipped with the newest image and sound systems and ergonomic seating. It is a family business and both of my parents spend hours in the lobby, greeting, recommending and discussing films. Special showings, group rates, schools, University, are all contracted on a one‐to one basis. But the audience is slowly and steadily declining. Special prices for students and retired people, fidelity cards, Fiesta del Cine (entrances at 4€) Wednesdays all help to attract audiences. Since we are now living a new challenge, we have realized that we have to actively go out and reach new audiences. That is my job, as well as filling every other position in the cinema. Cinevital and Cinepel stand for the city centers social life and want to offer the population cinematographical culture and entertainment. Our companies’ position towards young adults is to offer them an attractive cinematographical programme (entertainment, blockbusters), but also to try to lead them to discover other, more cultural films leading them to think and react to the world around them. Our goal is to let the young adults discover their curiosity through the big screen and to be willing to take risks when choosing their cinema‐events with their friends. Our company has often been the source of new initiatives for youth. We were for example part of the creation of the Magic Lantern in 1992 which has by now an international reputation. In 2000, I cofounded the Fantastic Film Festival in Neuchâtel (NIFFF). Then, my life took a new turn: that of culture, as a Big Events Coordinator for our National Exhibition (Expo.02). In 2003, I created a company in the field of culture (film production, cultural events, management of a dance company). Subsequently, I worked in a company specialized in VIP events for big companies. From 2008 to 2011 I worked as the administrative director of 2 theaters in Biel and Solothurn (7 theater productions and 5 opera productions per year). For the younger children (primary school) we want to offer school screenings, with or without educational hand‐outs for the teachers to prepare and evaluate the screening. Outside school we want to offer premieres, classics, specials and festival for them. We facilitate national touring festivals (like Cinekid and The Fantastic Children’s Festival) to attract children and let them have a nice time and good experiences with film and cross‐over disciplines. In these festivals they can see, play and learn. Attracting young audiences from high school is more difficult. We offer school screenings and try to choose movies that connect with their interests. In our regular program there are very little films that interesting and suitable for young audience between 12 and 18 years. We do try to make it attractive to come to our cinema by giving a discount at the entrance fee and through national youth organizations like CJP and MovieZone. Both have a website which highlights movies interesting for this group and reviews written by people of the same age. We link to these websites for choosing a nice movie to go to at our cinema. We also try to attract students by collaborating with the local university in our city. By working together with a group of students who organize their own movie event at our cinema, we hope to attract other students to the cinema. We also work with students for research about what students like when going to a movie, if they know our cinema and how we can attract them. Furthermore we use social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to attract this target group to our cinema. The programme covers all aspects of learning about film through watching and understanding, from bespoke schools’ screenings and education events through to lifelong learning activities and special projects such as the successful Takeover Film Festival for young people. The QFT Learning programme is accessible to all ages and includes informal talks, contextual introductions, Q&A’s, workshops and master classes and other special events, many events have leading high profile film‐makers, actors and practitioners in attendance. We at QFT passionately believe in the potential of film as a tool for education and social and community engagement and our ambition is to realise this in the following ways:  By delivering a specially designed and delivered range of screenings for schools and colleges.  By delivering a year round programme of lifelong learning and community engagement activity linked to the QFT’s public film programme.  By developing and delivering dedicated special projects and community initiatives, including QFT’s Youth Panel and the Takeover (Youth) Film Festival.  By using our expertise, knowledge and experience to advocate for education around film and contribute strategically to film education across Northern Ireland. The Learning programme provides access to moving image screening events, workshops and short courses to over 5000 young people every year, mostly at the QFT venue. She also co‐ordinates informal film discussion groups and workshops for over approximately 2000 adults each year.
