ANNUAL REPORT 2016
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & BOARD PRESIDENT
NOT JUST JOBS, PATHWAYS
With 40+ years of experience, JVS knows
how to transform lives.
In July 2015, we launched an ambitious
5-year strategy to help even more people
secure jobs with a career pathway. Just
one year later, we’ve more than doubled
the number of people in these programs.
They are building skills and finding good
jobs (earning between $40-80k annually) in
high growth industries: healthcare, financial
services, technology, and more to come.
2015-16 Results:
• 7 out of 10 career
pathway graduates
found work
• the average wage for
adults rose to $28/hour
• we served 3,000+
people, including nearly
800 youth
JVS is transforming the Bay Area by combatting income inequality. Over the
next several years, our graduates will earn more than $200,000,000 in wages –
all made possible by the generosity of our community.
Thank you for joining our vision of a Bay Area where prosperity is widely shared.
We’re thrilled to tell you about our progress in this year’s Annual Report.

HEALTHCARE SUCCESS
For nearly eight years before
coming to JVS, Melissa, a single
mom in San Francisco, worked
hard in a series of part-time jobs
- restaurant, retail, and temporary
administrative positions. She wasn’t
as stable as she wanted to be,
particularly with her kids getting
older.
“ JVS helped me get my
first official permanent
job. That was big for
me. I’m so happy to be
building a better life for
me and my family. ”
Recognizing an incredible opportunity, Melissa enrolled in 10 weeks of
JVS training for a 4-month paid internship at UCSF. She excelled, made
connections and got hired by UCSF. Three years later, UCSF remains her
employer, and with her recent promotion, she’s making $66k annually!
Within six months of graduating,
job seekers in our Skills to Work in
Healthcare programs are moving from
poverty to annual wages of $55k+.

industry had changed.
John needed a radical
transformation to update his skills -- and combat the
stigma of long-term unemployment. JVS’s 4-month
Skills to Work in Technology program combined the
technical and job search training he needed to become
a Salesforce Certified Administrator. Recently, John
secured his first full-time job in almost 10 years at
MDLIVE, a leading telehealth provider.

Nearly half of all JVS job seekers are
long-term unemployed. Without our
help, only one in ten1 are likely to ever
return to full employment.

NEW PATHWAYS FOR YOUTH
Since 1993, JVS has helped 6,000 youth to prepare
for the world of work through training and paid
work experience. Today, our strategy focuses on
middle skill jobs – those that require more than a
high school diploma, but less than a 4-year degree.
Today, nearly half of California jobs require
middle skills.1
Working with more than 50 employers and
education partners, JVS provides work experience
that reinforces classroom learning and keeps
students engaged in education. Our programs
move youth on a path – from career
awareness and work preparation to industryspecific training and living wage jobs.

Lombard Auto Body is a key partner that has
provided 35 youth with career exposure and
work experience in automotive technology. In
June 2016, we added a new layer to this work
by helping JVS youth with disabilities to enter a
competitive summer program at Washington High
School that pairs classroom training with work
experience at both Lombard Auto Body and San
Francisco Muni.
We’re excited to build out our work in automotive
technology, along with our other pathways for
youth in building trades, early child education and
environmental technology.
