Issue No. 17, 1 November 2013
To encourage means to:
Our hearts are beating with love; Lord,
help us to open it to others. We have
been entrusted with gifts and talents.
Let us use them for God’s service and
take courage as we step each day into
the unknown, confident that God is with
us.

Whilst a 4 day break at this time of the year
could be regarded as something of a luxury, it
does give us the opportunity, in an extremely
busy term, to ensure we are in ‘top form’ as we
approach the remaining weeks of term. Make
no mistake however, there certainly is still
much work to be done!
What follows gives some indication of just how
vibrant life has recently been at the College and
dare I say it, something of what we can expect in
the lead up to the end of the school year.
Grade 5 Enrolment Meeting:
It was encouraging to have over 150 families
present at the recent Grade 5 Enrolment
Meeting. These numbers indicate there is strong
interest in the community for places at our
College. Families who were unable to be
represented on the night should contact the
General Office for an application form for
Enrolment.
Arts Week:
This week has been busy too, with “Arts Week”
being the focus. Thanks to Mrs Helen Smith, our
Arts Coordinator and the many staff who
assisted her, we were privileged to witness a
marvelous array of the creative and performing
arts talents that so many of our students
possess. All those who participated were
deserving of congratulations and thanks.
Year 12 Graduation & Sydenham Awards:
On Thursday 24 October, I was privileged to
attend the CRC Sydenham Year 12 Graduation
Mass and presentations. Held at St Patrick’s
Cathedral, it was great to catch up with many of
our ex-students and parents and it was pleasing
to see ex CRC North Keilor students feature in
the awards. Congratulations to the following
past students of our College who received
special recognition:
Rebecca McMahon
Luke Visevic
Carla Santalucia
School Spirit Award
Cluster Award
Cluster Award
Also recognised recently at the
CRC Sydenham Final Assembly were;
Domenic Di Pasquale College Captains Award
Dylan Zammit
Peter Mastek Award
Ian Limpin was named a College Captain for
2014
Carla Santalucia the Social Justice Captain and
Mikhailia Mascarenhas and Adrian Rizzo were
named Cluster Leaders
We congratulate all graduates, award winners
and wish all the Year 12 students all the best for
their final exams.
NITOR Trip:
Last Thursday and Friday the NITOR group set
off on what now has become an annual
‘excursion’ to Sydney. The boys and their
mentors David Magris and Brian Horan, spent
time exploring the historical and geographical
landmarks of the Harbour City. By all reports
they were wonderful ambassadors for the
College, their families and themselves.
COMING UP…………
Year 9 Camp
Next week all of our Year 9s head off to Portsea
for the Year 9 Camp. There has been much
planning and preparation go into the camp
already and weather permitting it will be a
memorable experience for all involved.
End of Year Exams – Years 9 & 10
The end of year exams begin for Year 10 on
Monday 25 November and for the Year 9’s on
Wednesday 27 November. It would be
important that students begin their revision for
these tests as soon as possible – no time like the
present in fact!!
Year 9 Families - Enrolment Meeting for CRC
Sydenham 2014:
If they haven’t already done so, Year 9 parents
will be receiving correspondence from CRC
Sydenham in the next few days. It outlines
details of an important enrolment meeting
being held at the College on 20 November. I
urge all Year 9 families to make this meeting a
priority.

Grade 6 Information Evening – 7.30pm
Wednesday 13 November in College Hall:
On this evening we will continue the transition
process when we will meet the parents of the
Grade 6 students who will become a part of our
College in 2014. We then look forward to
meeting the students themselves on
“Orientation Day” (10 December, 2013).
Secondhand Book Sale:
This year, the Secondhand Book Sale will be
held on Tuesday 10 December in the College
Hall. It will begin at 3.30pm and conclude at
5.00pm. A list of the books that can be bought
and sold at the Secondhand Book Sale will be
distributed in the next newsletter. Please note
that there are fewer books available to be sold
this year as we continue the move to electronic
texts.
Fees for 2013:
I remind all families with outstanding accounts
of the importance of clearing these as soon as
possible and I invite any parent who is
experiencing financial difficulties to contact
either myself or Cathy Smith (Bursar) at the
College to discuss their concerns.
May we Remember them in November:
The month of November on the Catholic
Calendar is set aside for us to remember and
pray for all those who have passed into eternal
life. Wednesday (30 October) was the third
anniversary of the passing of our immediate
past Principal, John Arthurson. John was
Principal of the College for 13 years and saw it
through much growth and development. Much
more than that, he was our Leader, our boss,
our teacher, our mentor and our friend. Words
do not fully do justice to the contribution he
made to our College. Our prayers and thoughts
are with John’s family at this time, as they are
with anyone who has lost a loved one, especially
this year.
In addition to this, we have other members of
the College Community (students and staff) that
have family who are struggling with serious
health concerns. We keep them in our prayers
also.

Bishop Long Visits CRC North Keilor
On Wednesday we were privileged to host a
visit from Bishop Vincent Long.
Bishop Vincent is the Bishop for the West of
Melbourne and during his visit, some of our
students (pictured) had the opportunity to
spend time chatting with him.
They asked him about his work as a Bishop,
his daily routine and how he became a
Bishop. He also spoke to them about his
vocation as a Franciscan.

Change to Semester Two Reports
The College has been exploring ways to provide
families with ongoing feedback about their
child’s learning throughout the Semester rather
than receiving all the assessment information at
the end of the Semester in a formal report.
In this way parents can keep up to date about
what their child is currently doing in class and
what areas they require further assistance.
Parents will also be alerted when work is
incomplete or not submitted. Currently
teachers of the core subjects Mathematics,
English and Science Years 7-10 and
Humanities Year 7-8 have entered a set of
results on the Parent Access Portal for
parents to review.
At this stage the College is in a trial phase and
we do recognise that Assessment and Reporting
is more than a set of numbers and codes and we
envisage that in 2014 teachers will be able to
include information on class tasks and criteria
CRCNK Newsletter No. 17: 1 November 2013
sheets through the portal to provide a more
holistic understanding of your child’s
development.
The Semester Two Report 2013 will include all
the same categories for all subjects including
comments except the core subjects of
Mathematics, English and Science Years 7-10
and Humanities Year 7-8 which will not include
an overall comment due to these teachers
participating in the Parent Access Portal.
I am interested in Parents Feedback regarding
the online reporting through the Parent Access
Portal and welcome parents comments and
suggestions on this topic as we prepare for full
implementation in 2014.

STUDENT WELLBEING
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENT WELLBEING
CRC is a Sunsmart School:
In the last newsletter I wrote a lengthy article
on being Sunsmart at CRCNK. The weather has
started to warm up and whilst we have had
some fairly cloudy days the UV index has been
in the High to Very High range most of this week.
It is these UV rays that have the potential to
damage our skins. Thanks to the vigilance of
staff and co-operation of students; most
students are taking out their hats and wearing
them at recess and lunchtime.
Unfortunately there are a few students that are
not complying with the expectation to wear a
hat and as of the end of this week if there is not
a legitimate reason the students will be asked to
spend the remainder of Recess and Lunch
indoors. Further repeats of this non-compliance
will result in the student being issued with a
30min after school detention.
Each student is expected to have a hat with
their name clearly written on the inside of the
hat. Hats are available for purchase at the
College Office for $18.00.
Working Bee 4 – Wow! Fantastic support!
We held our final Working Bee for the year on
Saturday 26 October. It was well supported and
we had 35 parents, students and staff assisting
with gardening, staining of seats, landscaping,
cleaning and providing our morning tea. Much
was achieved and by lunchtime the College was
left in great shape for the conclusion of the
school year.
Our thanks to the following parents, students
and staff who attended the working bee:
Jane Bonello, Dean Cations, John & Viktorija
Fedorko, the Refalo Family (Margaret, Peter &
Katelyn), the Tyrell Family (Obrah, Farah, Iorah
& Ioapo), Mark & Peachy Limpin, Luke &
Andrew Parnis, Marc Gerace, the O'Sullivan
family (Finn, Liam, Peter & Rhowena), Lachlan
Fuentes, Jason Vardon and the Haber Family
(Christine, Emily & Megan), Greg Wade, John
Coshan, Mick O’Neill, Luke Mifsud & Ian Shaw.
We would like to particularly acknowledge
Marilyn Harper, Dean Cations & Peachy Limpin,
for their deep commitment and support of the
working bees over a number of years. As their
children complete their final year at the College
we thank them for their generous support. Of
course they are always welcome back to the
College or working bees in the future.
Our thanks also to these families for their
generous monetary donation or food for the
morning tea:
De Bono, Chan, Cassar, Emanovic, Dragovic,
Hennell, Albanese, Segulin, Saliba, Coric,
Krajacic,
Edirisinghe,
Scerri,
Machuca,
Mastroianni, Elia, Senanayake, Giunta, Iorio,
Ziegelaar, Haber.
Once again on behalf of the College I would like
to thank all of the members of the College
community that have attended the working
bees this year or have supported them through
donations or provisions for morning teas.
My particular thanks to Mick O’Neill –
Maintenance Coordinator for his organisation of
the Working Bees over the year. We look
forward to this continued support in 2014.

residences of their own. Dana and Sr Brigid then
went on to explain how we can help and
support asylum seekers. They spoke about how
there are furniture drives. Asylum seekers move
into an apartment there is no furniture. From
the drives they gather resources such as
mattresses, couches, tables, chairs, etc.
Seeds of Justice
Reflections on Leadership training program
conducted by CRC Sydenham…
After the two concluded, we broke off into small
groups and had to present to everyone how we
can ‘Raise our Voice’ on the issue of asylum
seekers. My group created a role play of a
debate in Parliament, one team being for and
the other team being against asylum seekers.
After the role play, we had quiet prayer time.
On Thursday, 24 October, I attended the ‘Seeds
of Justice’ program, run by Mercy Education. I
attended the overnight activity along with
students from CRC Caroline Springs and St
Albans, as part of CRC Sydenham’s 2014
Student Leadership Group.
I was accompanied by Nathan Peeters, Wendell
Garcia, Stephanie Lacerna (CRC Caroline
Springs), Redmon Ortega and Bree Grech (CRC
St Albans), along with Marg Carswell –
Intercampus Faith Coordinator and Paul Reed –
Director of Faith and Mission, CRC Sydenham.
There were also other school groups present, in
all about 50 young people. The two day social
justice activity focused on Asylum Seekers, with
the theme being ‘Paving the Road to Refuge’. We
listened to Ms Dana Affleck and Sr Brigid Arthur
csb, two women that are strong asylum seeker
advocates. Dana, currently studying law, told us
some startling facts such as Australia has
broken between 60 – 150 laws in the
International Asylum Seeker Convention and
that more than $2.2 billion is spent annually to
fund asylum seekers offshore.
Dana also told us about asylum seekers that she
has met and how they are trying to turn their
damaged lives around in our country. Sr Brigid
told us about asylum seekers she has
accommodated in her house. She shared with us
their sad and tragic lives in their native
countries, many fleeing Afghanistan, Syria and
Sri Lanka.
She told us how they are very appreciative of all
the help and support they have received and
how some of them are now trying to find
CRCNK Newsletter No. 17: 1 November 2013
Upon receiving a candle, we all lit it from a
central candle. This would represent bringing
light into the world for asylum seekers, as Jesus
brings light to those in darkness. This concluded
our first day of activities.
Day two opened with a discussion panel with
four advocates for asylum seekers, who told us
about the many ways in which we can assist
them. They also ran a Q&A for anyone who had
questions. along with the Student Leadership
Group.
After the discussion panel, we had a chat with
our school groups, where we spoke about how
we could implement ways into our college to
help asylum seekers. We brainstormed many
ideas and we’re now going to bring those ideas
forward to the Student Leadership Group next
year. I would like to thank CRC Sydenham for
the opportunity of appointing me a Cluster
Leader for 2014 and thanks go to Marg and Paul
for accompanying us to this program. I look
forward to working with Nathan, Wendell,
Stephanie, Redmon and Bree next year.

F1 in Schools State Finals
It is hard to think back to February when the
teams started planning for this event. Nearly
every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Lunchtime Grand Max Racing and Interstellar
Racing came to the Computer Room to design
and organise their cars for the F1 in Schools
Challenge. Grand Max Racing consisting of
Nathan Xerri, Team Manager, Andrew Parnis,
Car Designer and James Stenta, Graphic
Designer were trying to improve on last year’s
Runner Up placing.
competing in Development Class (first year
teams). Once everything was set up there was a
hectic timetable of judging and racing until
about 3pm in the afternoon. Despite the cars not
performing as well as expected there was still
tangible excitement in the air as teams felt that
what they had done over the year was enough
to gain valuable points in other areas.
On arrival on Wednesday the teams competed
in the knockout competition. It was good to see
the cars perform a little better than the previous
day. As the morning progressed the judges
collated the scores for the final presentation.
Interstellar Racing despite being competitive in
all areas did not manage to take away any
awards. Grand Max Racing took away the: Best
Pit Display, Best Team Identity, Collaboration
with Industry Award and the Innovation Award.
When the finalists were announced there was
hope that Grand Max may have booked a
position but unfortunately that was awarded to
another team.
Interstellar Racing consisting of Sehjameet Sing,
Team Manager, Andrew Goldun, Car Designer
and Domenic Codespoti, Graphic Designer were
inspired by what Grand Max had achieved and
decided to enter their team as well.
Both teams are to be congratulated on their
efforts over the year. I would also like to thank
all the parents for their help and support in
preparing the teams for the finals.
The State Final was held at Quantum, a
Technology Annexe of Latrobe University on
Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th October. On
Arrival the teams unleashed their posters and
marketing items on the display area. It was soon
evident that Grand Max had the best display of
the day. Interstellar Racing after some last
minute encouragement soon realised that the
hard work they had done meant that their
display was just as good as the other schools

CRC North Keilor competed in the Division Two
SACCSS Athletics Carnival at Lakeside Stadium,
Albert Park on 17 September.
Students competed to their best ability and we
finished in the top 3 or 4 schools in every age
division and placed second in the Junior Boys.
One of the highlights of the day was our
performance in the Relays where CRCNK boys
won three out of a possible four races. Well
done to all involved. We are looking forward to
