Niche
- Consists of where an organism lives and what it does.

Niche
- To determine what a niche is, consider the way an organism
"makes its living".
Consider how:
- It gets food/energy
- Releases its waste
- Interacts with other organisms
- Moves in its environment
- Uses resources for reproduction and other activities
- Changes its environment

Competition
- When a niche overlaps with other species competition can occur
between members of the same species and between different
species
- When a resource becomes scarce, organisms must compete for it
- Variations may give one species an advantage

Co-existance
- When a niche overlaps with other species BUT the resources are
shared

Broad Niche
- Organisms that have a broad niche can fill many different roles
within an ecosystem.
- In Canada, there are not as many different species as there are
in other regions. However, there are large population of the
species that you do find.
- This is because the animals that live here year-round must be
able to withstand daily and seasonal weather changes and their
diets must changes based on availability.

Narrow Niche
- A highly specialized role or characteristic activity undertaken by
an organism in an ecosystem
- Organisms that live in areas where the temperature and food
supply stays stable will have a narrow niche.
Eg. The organisms in the Galapagos Islands
