Phases of the Moon

Final Project Storyboard
Title: Phases of the Moon
By: Brian Birdsall
Date: 03/31/15
Duration: 5-7 minutes
Navigation: A forward, backward, and pause navigation button should be available with each slide other than assessment slides. This will allow
the learner a greater degree of control.
Animation: The on-screen text can be animated to enter and/or exit. Also, Moon images can be zoomed or pan-and-scan. Movement will be
mostly in the video clips showing Moon orbit and Earth shadow.

Narration
Let’s start our lesson with how
the Moon travels around the
Earth.
In this video, the Sun is shining
from the bottom right corner of
the video.
Notice how sometimes the light
side of the Moon faces the
Earth, and sometimes the dark
side faces the Earth? This is the
Full Moon and the New Moon.
We’ll talk more about that in a
minute.
Let’s start by looking at the
phases of the Moon.
In this image, you can see all the
phases of the Moon at once.
Each of the phases has its own
name. Which ones do you
already know?
We are going to learn about
each of these phases. We can
start here with the New Moon.
The New Moon is caused by the
Moon’s shadow from the Sun.
When we look up at the Moon,
we see a darkened Moon
because the Sun’s light is shining
on the other side of the Moon.

Waxing Crescent Moon
Narration
When the Moon “grows,” or
becomes more visible in the
night sky, it is called waxing.
Sometimes this is just called a
Crescent Moon.
First Quarter Moon or
Half Moon
As the Moon “gets bigger,” or is
more lit by the Sun, we see a
Half Moon. This Half Moon is
called the First Quarter Moon.
Waxing Gibbous Moon
The next phase is called the
waxing gibbous. We already
know that waxing means that
the Moon is showing more light
or “growing,” but what is
gibbous? Gibbous means a
swelling on one side. The light
we see on the Moon has swelled
to more than half. Whenever
the Moon is between half and
full, the Moon is called gibbous.

Waning Gibbous Moon
Third Quarter Moon
Narration
Next in the Moon phase cycle is
the Full Moon. The Full Moon
happens when we can see the
Sun’s light lighting the entire
near side of the Moon.
A Full Moon happens every
about every 29 and a half days.
This means that sometimes we
can see a Full Moon two times in
one month.
Now it’s time for the Moon to
start disappearing in the night
sky. As less light from the Sun
hits the Moon, we see less of
the Moon. This fading of the
light is called waning.
You remember that a Moon that
is between Full Moon and Half
Moon is called gibbous. Because
this Moon is getting “smaller,” it
is called a waning gibbous.
The Third Quarter Moon is
sometimes called a Half Moon
too. But because the Sun’s light
on the Moon is getting smaller,
or waning, we call this Half
Moon the Third Quarter Moon.
The Moon is ¾ through all of its
phases.

Assessment 1
Here we are back at the
beginning. The New Moon starts
the phases all over again.
That was a lot to remember.
Let’s look at all the Moon phases
to see if we can get a better
understanding.
Do you see how the Moon
changes when following this
arrow?
Remember, waxing means
getting bigger, as in, more light
on the Moon.
Waning means getting smaller
or less light.
Let’s see if you can match the
Moon phase to its position.

Geosynchronous Orbit

Narration
Now that you understand the
phases of the Moon, let’s talk
about two mysteries of the
Moon and Sun.
That is one big statement. What
does that mean?
Do you notice something about
the Moon in this video? Look
again at the Moon and at the
side of the Moon that is facing
the Earth. Even though both the
Earth and the Moon rotate on
their axes and the Moon orbits
the Earth, the same side of the
Moon always faces the Earth.
This is called geosynchronous
orbit. Geo means Earth and
synchronous means at the same
time.
After learning about the phases
of the Moon, you know that the
phases are caused by the
Moon’s own shadow and our
view of the Moon from Earth.
But does the Earth ever cast a
shadow on the Moon, you might
ask. Yes, it does. This is called a
lunar eclipse. This is the only
time that the Earth casts a
shadow on the Moon.
