BOTHELL SONS OF NORWAY Nyheter OCTOBER 2011 Volume 39, Number 8 Dear Members, Velkommen til Høst! Welcome to Autumn! A time when vacations end, the weather turns cooler, football kicks off, deer and elk run for cover and activities and school begin again. Fall is a great time to join in the activities at Bothell Lodge and renew (or start) your friendships with other like minded Scandinavians. Just take a look inside. First off I need to say a big Thank You to Sue Waldrop for stepping in to get this edition of the Nyheter out to you. Our wonderful editor, Robert Boyer, had to have unexpected surgery and though he came through it just fine, he wasn’t going to be able to get the Nyheter out this month. I love how our members step in to help in times of need (and other times too)! September was a great kick off to our Fall season here at the lodge. Ellie Fife taught a very well attended Krum Kaka th class on the 17 and Marilyn Hansen again taught a three day Rosemaling class to eager student painters. Members from several District 2 lodges gathered at Trollhaugen for a weekend of camaraderie, food, learning new crafts and of course more food. If you have never attended a Heritage Retreat at Trollhaugen Lodge, I strongly recommend that you make sure you are there next September. Even if you missed all of the events in September, there is still time to get in on classes coming up this month. Our own th Mike Nelson will again be rolling out the lefse on October 15 and you can learn all the tricks and nuances of how to make the perfect round by attending this class. There is also a Hardanger workshop being taught by Roberta Morrow. th th It will happen on three consecutive Mondays, October 17 , 24 and November 7th. Be sure to check inside this Nyheter for specific details. Looking just a little bit further into the future our annual Bazaar & Bake Sale is coming up the first Saturday in November and Lutefisk Dinner is the first Saturday in December. We will need lots of helping hands on the day of each event as well as donations of baked goods. Please be generous and helpful if you can when you get a phone call from one of the volunteers for these events. Bothell Lodge is in need of you! We are currently looking for people to fill positions on our slate of officers to serve this coming year. Please seriously consider offering your time and talents to our lodge. You can call any of our current officers listed inside this Nyheter to ask questions or to volunteer to be an officer. Thank you for your time and consideration and we look forward to hearing from you soon. The wonderful talents of Fergus Prestbye will once again be in evidence at our Parcel Post Auction to be held at our October meeting on the 20th. Meatloaf and mashies are on the menu. Bring your enthusiasm and your check books and bid often, the proceeds of this event support the Ray Berg Scholarship Fund which helps the children and grandchildren of our members to go to college and summer camps. Hope to see you there! One last note, if you just can’t wait until December to sink your teeth into some Lutefisk, well you are in luck! Normanna th Lodge in Everett is hosting a Lutefisk dinner on Sunday October 16 from noon to 5pm. Tickets are available at the door, adults $20, children (ages 7-15) $10. Over time, an organized armed resistance movement, known as Milorg and numbering some 40,000 armed men at the end of the war, was formed under a largely unified command, something which greatly facilitated the transfer of power in May 1945. One the most successful actions undertaken by the Norwegian resistance was the Norwegian heavy water sabotage, which crippled the German nuclear energy project. Radical organizations such as the Osvald Group sabotaged a number of trains and railways. On October 25, 1944, the order was given for a Norwegian force in Britain to set sail for Murmansk to join the Soviet forces now entering Northern Norway. The Norwegian commander, Arne D. Dahl, had under his command a military mission responsible for creating a liaison with the soviets and setting up a civil administration. The small force arrived in Murmansk on November 6 and re-embarked onboard a Soviet ship, arriving back on Norwegian soil after having spent over four years in exile on November 10, 1944. The Norwegians were to take over the forward positions as soon as possible. Volunteers from the local population were hastily formed into "guard companies" armed with Soviet weapons pending the arrival of more troops from either Sweden or Britain. The first convoy arrived from Britain on December 7, 1944 and included two Norwegian corvettes (small ships) and three minesweepers. Reports came back stating that the Germans were in the process of pulling back from Porsanger but were laying mines and booby-traps along the way. This remained the situation as 1944 slipped into 1945. The new year would see the Norwegian forces helping the local population in the bitter arctic winter and dealing with occasional German raids from the air, sea and land as well as the ever present danger from mines. Reinforcements finally arrived from Norwegians based in Sweden and from Britain. By April 1945 the Norwegian forces stood at over 3,000 men. On April 26, 1945 the Norwegian command sent out a message that the famous Norwegian ship captured by the Nazis, the Finnmark, was free. The Germans finally capitulated on May 8, 1945, and left Norway. LIBRARY CORNER Sunshine Report: by Eileen Hippe By Marlis Pehling Inspiration comes from many corners. We have a book in our Library of unbelievable courage of the Norwegian resistance during World War II. “Defiant Courage”, by Astrid Karlsen Scott and Dr. Tore Haug, details the complete and astounding story of Jan Baalsrud and the people who helped him escape from the Gestapo. In late March of 1943 four Norwegian saboteurs arrived in northern Norway on a fishing cutter in Toftefjord to establish a base for sabotage operations with a goal of liberating Norway. They were betrayed and only Jan Baalsrud survived. Wounded, he began a dangerous journey over mountains, through snowstorms, and suffered frostbite and Arctic cold in an attempt to get to Sweden. The people of Troms District stepped forward to help him get there. They put their lives and families' lives in danger, but did so willingly. More than 60 people helped him, and the town of Manndalen was eventually burned by the Nazis. All who helped Jan to escape survived. President Franklyn D. Roosevelt stated, "And, if there is anyone who doubts of the democratic will to win, again I say, let him look to Norway." There are many, many stories of heroism that no one will hear, but I couldn't be prouder to be Norwegian after reading this amazing story.
