I received my bachelor's and master's degrees from Sam Houston State University. I have taught in Klein ISD for 10 years. My experience has been working with Special Education students at Schultz and Metzler. I am thrilled to become a Mahaffey Scottie and have the opportunity to work with Pre-Kindergarten students! I look forward to a wonderful school year of learning and adventure!! Teresita Ruiz Hi! My name is Teresita Ruiz. I’m from Mexico, where I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing at De La Salle University in the city of Leon, Guanajuato. Eleven years ago I immigrated to Houston next to my husband and first daughter. Here I started my career as a teacher with Aldine ISD. I taught Kindergarten there during 9 years, made great friendships and learned a lot as an educator and in a personal level as well. In 2014, I happily became part of Klein’s family; beginning the school year at the Pre-K Center Grace England, and later I finished it as part of first grade team at Schultz Elementary; where now, my two youngest daughters attend to school too. Last year I had the fortune of working with the little big students of Pre-K at Schultz. And this school year I’m blessed to be part of two amazing school communities: Mahaffey and Schultz. In both places I have the privilege of continue working with Pre-K children. I’m sure that together students, families and teachers; we can make a great team to achieve a successful school year full of fun learning!! :) Kindergarten Team: Lara Cotton I am starting my 4th year teaching in Klein ISD! I am so excited to be in kindergarten this year! I grew up in The Woodlands with 2 crazy sisters and lots of animals! I have had ducks, chickens, horses, cows, parakeets and even hamsters, rabbits and mice! I dance all of my childhood and even was a part of the Reveliers dance team at my high school. I attended Texas State University where I majored in special education and earned a minor in photography! I earned my Masters of Arts from Sam Houston State University in Special Education with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have been married to my husband and high school sweetheart Will since October of 2014 and we have continued the tradition of having many pets! We have 3 fur babies named April, Kahlua and Alabama! We also have 3 cats! I like to fill my summers with reading, growing orchids, traveling and my wedding photography business! This is going to be an AMAZING year at Mahaffey! Linda Jones Welcome to Kindergarten! I am so excited to be a part of the Mahaffey teaching team for the 2016-17 school year! I know we will have a fantastic year learning and growing together! My name is Mrs. Jones, and I feel extremely fortunate to be in Klein ISD and to have the opportunity to work with such caring, dedicated, and child-centered teachers and administrators. They, like me, believe in putting children first. I received my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas and my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston. This is my 23rd year to be a teacher! I have been happily married for nearly 33 years and have two wonderful boys who currently both work for my husband’s construction company. Our oldest son Frank, Jr., 28, is married and works as a Project Manager for our Dallas office. Our youngest son, Zachary, 26, also works as a Project Manager in our Houston office. I absolutely love teaching Kindergarten. I will be teaching the Language Arts block in the morning, and my partner, Mrs. Tricia Serres, will be teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies in the afternoon. Mrs. Serres is an absolute gem to work with. We have been best friends for over 25 years and our three year “job-share” partnership has been fabulous so far! We will cover for each other in case of illness, family business, etc., and the benefit to your children is that they will very rarely have a sub in the classroom! We both look forward to teaching at Mahaffey next year. My personal goal is to inspire children to become life-long readers, encourage them to become critical thinkers, and to help them make a seamless transition between home and school! Let the learning begin!!! Liz Laurel I am so thrilled to be joining the Mahaffey team! This year is going to be filled with so many wonderful memories. I was born and raised in Austin, and lived there for almost 30 years. At the beginning of this year, I decided to move to Houston to start a new adventure with Sean in his career as a user experience lead for Reliant Energy. He has lived in Houston for twenty-nine years and I am thrilled to be joining him here! After getting my Bachelors of Science degree from Texas State University, I began my teaching career six years ago in the Eanes ISD in Austin at Barton Creek Elementary. I was a collaborative assistant for a year and have taught first grade for five years and successfully lead my students in a positive learning environment. I love traveling, shopping, and spending time with my two white dogs Harley and Jeffrey. I'm also a bit of a foodie. Most of all, I love my family and teaching. I am very excited to be at Mahaffey this year and look forward to an amazing year! Daniela Mollinedo - Bilingual i Hola ! I grew up in the Klein area and have been teaching kindergarten bilingual for 8 years. I have a very strong passion for bilingual education and have very high expectations for my students and for myself. I love being able to nurture my students in their native language and guide them in their exciting journey to learning a second language. I have a wonderful family who has given me unconditional love and support throughout my life. My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my crazy D’s my husband Dennis, my two sons Dael and Diego, and our dog Dino. They are my everything!! I’m extremely excited to be a part of such an awesome team and can’t wait for what this upcoming school year will be like. Go Scotties!!! Tricia Serres I am so happy to be on the Mahaffey teaching team for the 2016-17 school year. We are going to have so much fun!!!!I have been teaching for many years and have experience in Pre-K, Kindergarten, First and Second Grade. I have also had the pleasure of working for Stephen F. Austin as a University Supervisor for eleven years working with student teachers. I taught First Grade at Kuehnle Elementary in Klein ISD for five years and then tutored in both Math and Reading for four years at Roth and Kuehnle. I also taught Pre-K at Abercrombie academy for two years and Second grade for two years in Cy-Fair ISD. Kindergarten is my favorite grade to teach by far! I will be teaching your child math, science and social studies this year. We are very hands on in our classroom and it will probably be a very noisy yet productive learning environment. I have been married to my husband, Brad, for twenty-five wonderful years and we have two children. My son, Connor, is a senior at Texas State University while my daughter, Morgan, is a Sophomore at Concordia University in Irvine, California, where she plays soccer. We also have many pets that they have left behind so we are not lonely!! When I'm not teaching I love to shop, travel and relax by the pool. I look forward to getting to know your children this year as we are learning and growing together! 1st Grade Team: Josie Scherrman – Bilingual Self Contained I am very excited to be joining the Mahaffey family. I was born and raised in Houston and I am a proud member for the Fighting Texas Aggie class of '01. Whoop! I am married to Tony Scherrman, he is a school counselor in Klein. We have two amazing children, Elizabeth and Matthew. Elizabeth, 6, will be in first grade and attend Mahaffey with me. Matthew, 3, keeps us on our toes from the moment he wakes to the moment he lays his head down to sleep. After my family, my loves are coffee and working in my garden. I began my teaching career in Aldine where I taught first grade and PreK. After leaving Aldine, I came to Klein to teach first grade bilingual at Brill Elementary. This is my third year teaching in Klein and I look forward to the next step in my teaching journey at Mahaffey. Sarah Schuh – Self Contained I am very excited to become part of the Mahaffey Elementary team! This will be my first year teaching in Klein ISD but my 16th year of teaching. I grew up in Houston and attended Texas A&M University (whoop!). I have recently moved back home to Houston and I am excited about rediscovering my town and exploring new places. I enjoy traveling, watching Aggie football, reading, and spending time with my family and friends. My entire teaching career has been in first grade, in part because of my love of reading! I look forward to using my new knowledge from Master’s Degree in Reading with students to make them Future Ready! Michelle Sharp – ELA/SS I am super excited about joining the Mahaffey team! Teaching is my passion, and I am thankful that I get to do what I LOVE every day. The absolute best part of my job is teaching my students to read while inspiring a love of learning in each one of them. I was born in Mississippi and spent most of my childhood there and in North Carolina. Life brought me to Texas as a sophomore where I graduated from Klein Oak High School. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University. Soon after graduation, I went back to school to get my teaching certificate. This Fall will be my 19th year in education (17th in Klein). My classroom experience includes teaching: Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade. I married my high school sweetheart, and we have two incredible boys. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, going to baseball games, and watching Aggie football. I am truly blessed to live and work in the Klein community, and I am looking forward to an amazing year with our “first” little Scotties! Stacey Teer – Math/Science Howdy! I'm a Texas native. I grew up in Waller and received my degree from Texas A& M University. I can't remember a time that I did not want to be a teacher. I remember playing teacher in my dad's high school classroom when I was just a Kindergartner. This will be my 27th year of teaching. My teaching experience includes Kindergarten, First and Second grade. I am a mother of two. My daughter is a senior at Klein this year and my son is a Freshman at Klein Oak. My two teenagers keep me very busy and bring me much joy! I am beyond excited to be a Mahaffey Scottie! I feel blessed to be your child's teacher. 2nd grade Team: Diana Jennings – Self Contained I am so excited to be a Mahaffey Scottie! Though I grew up in the Boston area, I have lived in Texas for 16 years and consider myself a true Texan at heart. I received my degree from SHSU and have been a teacher in Klein for 8 years. I enjoy anything, well everything that I do with my family and friends, especially hiking, biking and pizza family movie night! I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of this journey that we are on together. I look forward to all that this coming school year has to offer, as we help to shape tomorrows leaders! Vangiee Cabezas-Moreno – Bilingual Self Contained Hi! I am Mrs. Moreno, Bilingual teacher. I am honored, excited and happy to be part of Mahaffey family. I am from Nicaragua, C.A. and have been teaching at Nitsch Elementary. I am happily married to Enrique Moreno and have three precious children. Jennely and Enrique are attending Klein ISD and Jocelyn graduated from Klein High, which now is attending Lone Star College. My goals are to reach every child, every heart and every mind to achieve academic success. My greatest accomplishments have been becoming a teacher, working with kids and helping them achieve their academic goals. I am happy to be part of your children's education this year. Amber Noble – Math/Science Hello Mahaffey Scotties! What an honor it is to be to be joining the Mahaffey family and to share the love of learning together! I’m originally from Paris, Texas and moved to the Klein area 2 years ago. I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, where I met my wonderful husband Patrick. We are the proud parents of our precious one year old daughter, Adalynn! I have been teaching for 8 years, however I have discovered my true passion for teaching is ignited in the math and science classroom! I look forward to meeting each of you as this is going to be an amazing year together! Lindsey Yancey – ELA/SS Hello! I am Lindsey Yancey and I am thrilled to be a Mahaffey Scottie! My mom just retired after 39 years of teaching and I knew that I would follow in her footsteps since I was 4! I attended Sam Houston State University (Go Bearkats) and went on to teach in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD for 5 years. This is my first year teaching in Klein and I am looking forward to an amazing journey! In my classroom we are a family! All students have strengths and it is the teacher’s job to build upon them. Every year I strive to create life-long learners who love to come to school! In my spare time I love spending time with my husband, reading, and watching the Astros and Texans! I sure am glad to be PLAID! 3rd grade Team: Dawn Baumel – ELA/SS I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana with a degree in Elementary Education. This is my 18th year of teaching in the state of Texas. I know I have the best job in the world--- learning and growing with your children! I have a wonderful family that includes my husband, Dan, my son, Jeffrey, my daughter, Morgan, and our dog, Astro. I love to travel with my family and cheer my kids on at their baseball and softball games. I am extremely excited to begin a new adventure as a Mahaffey Scottie and I know our first year is going to be amazing! Jennifer Fuller – ELA/SS I was born in Houston and grew up in Sugar Land. I am a native Texan, through and through. I am so excited to be a part of the Mahaffey team! I have taught for 12 years. When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my son and husband. I love to be outdoors. I also have a passion for the theater, and I enjoy seeing as many shows as I can. I am also a big country music fan. Watching live music is also something I love to do. Lili Reyna – Bilingual Math/Science You will most likely have to sing, dance, or at least shake something in my class. It’s my mission to engage young minds with fun and cultivate dreams with a little inspiration for something that is out there, but is in no way beyond every child’s capabilities! In my nineteen years of teaching, I have found that the most rewarding experience in life is to sharpen and bring to life the talent and promise of bilingual third graders. I started my teaching career in Clear Creek ISD, but have worked in Klein ISD for the past 11 years. It is such a great blessing and honor to be a founding staff member of Mahaffey Elementary! I have taught Pre-K, Kindergarten, Second, Third, and Fourth Grades. I received my bachelor’s degree from University of Houston in Education with a specialization in Reading and English (British Literature). I am married to an amazing husband, and I’m the mother of a proud Aggie. When not traveling to our next adventure, you’ll find us working out, at church, shopping, eating great food, or just hanging out with friends in our home in The Woodlands. Elcida Rodriguez – Bilingual ELA/SLA/SS Hi Scotties! I am a Klein product and wholeheartedly promote the district’s motto to get students future ready. I was born, raised, and live in Houston, Texas. I am happily married to my husband of 20 years and we have two wonderful children: A 19-year-old daughter in college and a 17-year-old son at Klein High School. Since I was five-years-old I've known that I wanted to be an educator. I received a Bachelor’s degree from The University of Houston Downtown and a Master’s degree in Education in International Literacy with a certification in second language from Sam Houston State University. Eleven years ago I was hired to work at Kohrville Elementary and have successfully taught grades 1st to 5th. From the start of my career I’ve made it my mission to instill a sense of righteousness, eagerness to learn, willingness to engage, and commitment not only within the classroom walls but beyond! The opportunity to join the Mahaffey family was a blessing. I am now committed to Mahaffey, and will work even harder to ensure that my new students receive their best education and be successful during their formative years. I look forward to meeting, new colleagues, new students and members of the community. I know that my passion, dedication, and commitment will shape future leaders who will one day change the world! I will teach bilingual 3rd grade ELA/SLA/SS. Laura Schneider – Math/Science I am so excited about the opportunity to work at Mahaffey. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas and a third generation Houstonian! I married my husband 25 years ago and moved to Reno, Nevada, were I attended the University of Nevada, and accomplished my dream of becoming a teacher. This is my fourteenth year teaching in Klein and my fourth year teaching third grade. I have two wonderful sons, one is a junior at the University of Arkansas and the other a Senior, at Klein High School . They both enjoy sports, so most of our evenings and weekends are spent at golf tournaments, lacrosse games and college football games. My husband graduated from the University of Texas and we are a household of Longhorn and now Razorback fans! Third grade is an exciting time. It will be a year full of new experiences. It is my goal to provide the knowledge and confidence that will prepare you for many years of learning. I am so happy to be a Mahaffey Scottie! Maurine Whitney – Math/Science I am so excited to be a part of the teaching staff that will open the doors to Klein’s newest school, Mahaffey Elementary. During my many years of teaching in the district, I have been a Theiss Tiger, a Benfer Bobcat, and a Brill Bronco. Now I can say, “I am Proud to be Plaid and become a Mahaffey Scottie,” and I am looking forward to teaching third grade in this beautiful new building. My two sons, Adam and Ryan, attended elementary, middle, and high school in Klein. I also have two grandchildren, Aiden and Arya. Aiden will be coming with me to Mahaffey and will be in fourth grade. Arya will start preschool this fall in Kyle, Texas. I am originally from Tennessee, a graduate of the University of Memphis, and always looking forward to my next trip home to visit with my two brothers and sister. My love is being a teacher, and my passion is working with elementary students to make learning a fun and memorable experience. 4th grade Team: Karen Goolsbee – ELA/SS I am very excited about joining the Mahaffey Scotties and serving the students and families at Mahaffey Elementary. I love working with children and believe all students are capable of learning. I believe learning should be fun and my goal is to provide students a safe and enjoyable learning environment. In my classroom I will provide students the tools they need to be successful now and continue to be lifelong learners. I am a native Houstonian and 3rd generation Texan. My family and I enjoy living in the Klein community. I'm happily married to my high school sweetheart Kurt, and we have two children, Sarah and Jay. Sarah attends Texas A&M and Jay is a sophmore at Klein High. Our furry children include a 70 pound Blue-tick Coonhound dog, named George Cooney, and two cats, Rosey and Peppy. In my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies, and bowling. Callie Jones – Math/Science I was raised in Spring, Texas and graduated from Spring High School. I graduated from Texas A&M University in 2012 and majored in Education. I absolutely love teaching Math and Science! Some fun facts about me are that I love sports, I work for the Houston Texans, I have two golden retrievers, and my husband also teaches and coaches in Klein ISD. I am blessed to be able to work at Mahaffey with an amazing principal, staff, students, and parents! I look forward to a fun-filled year with everyone and cannot wait to see the Scotties grow and make a difference! Cassi Noack – Math/Science I couldn’t be more thrilled to be starting this new adventure at Mahaffey. I have lived most of my life in this area of Texas and have a strong love for the people who also call it home, especially the children! I’ve been teaching in this area for many years, but have spent the last few up the road at Hassler Elementary teaching fourth graders. While teaching is my greatest passion, I also love the theater. My entire family gets involved in the plays by building sets, running the backstage, and supporting our youngest daughter who dreams of performing on Broadway one day. I’m very much looking forward to having fun, learning many new things, and becoming a better person right alongside all my new friends at Mahaffey! Elsy Santana – Bilingual Self Contained I am thrilled to know I will be teaching 4th grade bilingual at Mahaffey Elementary! It is an honor to have been selected to be part of a wonderful group of dedicated and passionate educators in charge of this extraordinary goal of opening our new school. I am originally from Venezuela, South America, but I have been living in the United States for more than 30 years. My husband Gustavo and I have been married for 24 years, and we are super proud parents of two beautiful teenagers: Lia Cristina, who just finished her Freshman year at University of Houston, and Gustavo Jr. who is in 10th grade at Tomball High School. My family and I love to travel in the US and around the world. The opportunity of living in and visiting different countries, adapting to new cultures, and learning new languages has been an enriching and amazing experience! I attended the University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri, graduating with a B.S. in Engineering Management. After graduation, I worked in the oil industry in Venezuela for 8 years. Once I became a mom, my priorities changed and I realized I wanted to dedicate my personal and professional experience to the field of education. Therefore, I obtained my teaching certificate as a bilingual teacher in 2000 and began working in Aldine ISD teaching 1st and 4th Bilingual. Five years later, I joined Klein ISD, where I have been teaching grades 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Bilingual at Metzler and Schultz Elementary. My goal as a teacher is to encourage, support and embed in our students the drive to succeed and become creative and independent learners. I am enthusiastically looking forward to our first year at Mahaffey, and to continue to inspire our students to become the best that they can be! Ashley Vara – ELA/SS I am thrilled to become a Mahaffey Scottie! I was born and raised in Houston. I graduated in 2007 from Texas Tech University...GO RED RAIDERS! I married my best friend and army veteran, Kyle Vara, in June of 2014. We met while playing each other's teams in co-ed softball. We currently have two fur babies, Buddy Biscuit and Tuxedo. I have been teaching for eight years in Spring ISD as a language arts and social studies teacher and GT representative for my school. I absolutely love teaching and cannot wait to meet your students! The 2016-2017 school year at Mahaffey will be the best one yet! 5th Grade Team: Tara Fields – Math Born in Downingtown, PA, my family and I moved to Texas when my dad was transferred here in 1982. When the decision was made that we would put down roots and buy a house, they purchased a home in Klein ISD. I'm a product of Klein Schools and proudly attended Kaiser Elementary, Wunderlich Intermediate, and graduated from Klein Forest High School in 1990. I went on to Sam Houston State and pursued a degree in History because of an influential teacher I had. However, I soon realized that big kids weren't my "thing" and I switched to Elementary Education. I student taught at Theiss Elementary and graduated in December 1995. I began my teaching career in August of 1996 at Eiland Elementary and moved to Kohrville Elementary in 2002, when it opened. I taught 4th grade for 10 years and this will be my 11th in 5th. I'm so excited to have the opportunity to open another brand new building! Outside of school, you'll find me hanging out with my husband, Troy, who is a photographer, and our twins, Abby and Memphis, who will be in second grade at Mahaffey this year. Sometimes, on the weekend, you'll find me shopping or playing bingo! Beverly Harper – ELA/SS Beverly Harper--ROCKIN’ teacher here! I have been rockin’ classrooms for over 16 years! I started my career in Aldine and Spring Branch districts back in the ‘90’s. I then jammed out in Campeche, Mexico for 3 years with my husband’s job. Then in 2004, I started in the Klein ISD band. I taught some rockin’ 5th graders at Hassler, some rockin’ 4th and 5th graders at Brill, and now I am going to ROCK MAHAFFEY 5th graders! I have 3 other bandmates in my home: my husband, my senior son, and my sophomore daughter. We also have an annoying roadie named SIlvy who sings (ummm barks) all the time. When I am not a teacher, I am listening to all different kinds of music, watching my daughter play basketball, or reading a book. Sometimes all 3 at the same time! I am very excited to open Mahaffey and I can’t wait to test out the sound system in our classroom! Tiffany Keiser – Science I am so ecstatic and blessed to be a teacher at Mahaffey. I am honored to be a part of this community and school. I am a proud Sam Houston State University graduate (Eat ‘em up Kats!!). I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, especially my two boys Samson and Gavin. I am looking forward to building prized relationships with students and faculty. Making a difference in the lives of children is all I want to do, and I can’t wait to get started! I love teaching through Google Apps For Education, and love all technology! Lorena Vazquez – Bilingual Self Contained I am so excited to join the Mahaffey Scotties! I was born in Pennsylvania, but raised in Venezuela, where I graduated from Business school. I got my certification in Bilingual Education when I moved to Texas and this will be my 17th year teaching. My husband and I are both Klein teachers and the proud busy parents of 5 children Carlos, Haydee, and Natalia (Klein Oak), Erick and Andrea (Krimmel). Outside school, you’ll see me running around between Band, Orchestra, CC/Track, Soccer, Dance, Theater and DI. I am passionate about diversity, culture, music, and technology. Can’t wait to start serving, creating, innovating with my bilingual students and families in our brand new 1:1 classroom, guiding them to become leaders and ready for future generations. L.A.M.P (Library Art Music PE) Lisa Kelley - Librarian I am so excited to be the Mahaffey Librarian! I am a PROUD Klein ISD graduate!!!! I love Klein ISD so much that I knew after attending Brill Elementary, Kleb Junior High and Klein High School this is where I wanted to teach! Before I had this amazing opportunity to join Mahaffey I was the job shared librarian at Benignus Elementary and at Kohrville for ten years as a kindergarten/1st teacher!!! I honestly believe I have the best job in the school and I never get tired of talking about books or reading with children. I believe the library/ learning commons is the heartbeat of the school and should always be a FUN, exciting, comfortable, and welcoming environment. When I am not in the learning commons I love spending time with my husband Merrick, our two kids Reid and Carley who will attend Mahaffey, shopping, traveling, and spending time at church. I graduated from Texas Tech University and Sam Houston State University! Meghan Flores – Library Aide I am a proud product of Klein ISD, attending Brill, Kleb, and Klein High School. I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a BS in Criminal Justice. I’m married to a sergeant in the Houston Police Department and we have two amazing children Noah and Phoebe. In my free time I enjoy baking, reading, and writing. I am so excited to join the Mahaffey team, and serve the students and families of Mahaffey Elementary School. Jess Thompson – Art Developing a passion for Visual Arts from an early age, it was only natural for me to become an Art Educator out of Texas State University. I have taught all levels of Art and really enjoy watching my students create and problem solve. In our hands-on Problem Solving 101 environment, my students often have paint under their nails and a sense of pride radiating from their shoulders.Outside my classroom time, I enjoy hanging out with my two gorgeous children and my fun-loving husband. My other favorite past times include running, traveling, creating my own Art, and rootin' for the Fightin' Texas Aggies! I am so excited to become a Mahaffey Scottie and I'm glad to be P.L.A.I.D.! Susan Hatley – Music I am so excited to be teaching music at Mahaffey Elementary! I've been in education for 22 years, and teaching in the elementary music classroom is my favorite place to be. I grew up on the Space Coast of Florida, still love the beach, and get there as often as possible. I earned my Bachelor of Music Education degree from Samford University, and my Master of Education from Lamar University. My husband and I have 3 children - a daughter at Texas Tech University, a son who is a Freshman at Klein High, and our youngest daughter is at Doerre Intermediate. We feel very blessed to be a part of the Klein community. Paige Liccioni – Music My name is Paige Liccioni and I am so excited to be teaching music at Mahaffey this year. I first discovered my passion for music while playing the bassoon in middle school band and that has now evolved into a love for teaching and inspiring young musicians at the elementary level. This will be my second year teaching in Klein and it has been such a pleasure to be able to teach in the area I grew up in. I am a former Klein Bearkat and a proud LSU Tiger. Geaux Tigers and Geaux Scotties! Allison Fox – PE Hi Mahaffey Scotties! First of all, I have to say how excited I am to be a part of an amazing school like this one. My ultimate goal is to create a positive atmosphere not only in the gym, but throughout the whole school. This is the present and the future! Now here is a little bit about my past....I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tarleton State University. I have 10 years of teaching experience (6 years in 1st grade and 4 years in PE). And the MOST important thing in my life is my FAMILY. I have an incredibly supportive husband, Chad Fox and 3 beautiful girls, Morgan, Ashleigh and Paige. Enough about me - Now let's have some FUN! :) David Sohort – PE I am so excited to be opening up Mahaffey Elementary! I have taught Physical Education in Klein I.S.D. for twelve years. Physical Education is my passion and I look forward to sharing this with our students to promote and develop an active and healthy lifestyle. Stay tuned for some fun filled clubs and events! Special Education Amie Akers – Developmental Assistant I am so excited to join the Mahaffey team! I am a Klein ISD product, who graduated from Klein Oak High School. I attended Sam Houston State University, and began my teaching career at Klein Weekday Ministries, working with preschool-aged children as a lead teacher. I absolutely love teaching and nurturing children to grow into their fullest potential. I evaluate each student in my class on a behavioral and educational level. In my current classroom, I have twin special needs children. Neither of these children can verbally communicate, so I am learning sign language. In my classroom, we learn with our whole bodies. I believe that all children will learn at different levels and paces. Each child is unique. My passion is to bring excitement and adventure into learning with each individual child on their own personal journey. Personally, I am a mother of 3 boys, ages 9, 7 and 5. My husband and I enjoy watching them play soccer and sports. Every day brings a new adventure and a different learning experience and I can’t wait to bring this excitement to Mahaffey. Sharon Brown – Developmental Assistant I am so excited to be joining Klein ISD and to be a part of opening a brand new school-Go Mahaffey! I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Education and my Master’s degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Baylor UniversitySick ‘Em Bears! I am also a Certified Autism Specialist. I have been working in Spring ISD for 19 years as a Structured Learning Facilitator (training staff and parents in academic, behavioral and social skills strategies for students with autism and other disabilities). I have also served the last 16 years as the SLP on the district’s Assistive Technology team. I am married to my awesome husband, Randy, who is a retired fireman, and have a step-son, Drew, a son, Corban, and 2 daughters, Kelley and Natalie. I also have 3 beautiful grandchildren! Love, love, love being a Nana! I enjoy spending time with my family, going to the beach, reading, hanging out by the pool, going out to eat with my friends, shopping, and traveling. I am THRILLED to be working in the Developmental classroom at Mahaffey! My heart’s desire is to make a difference in my student’s lives every day! My daughter, Natalie, who is now 24, has Autism, so I am looking forward to sharing what I have learned over the years as her parent- my triumphs and my mistakes—with the parents of my students. Looking forward to a fantastic year! Shawn Castor – Support Assistant I am looking forward to having a great year as a Mahaffey Scottie. For the past eight years I have been working at Schultz Elementary as the Pre-K Assistant. I absolutely love working with children and watching their minds grow. I have been married for 17 years. I have two boys. Mason is a Senior and Myles is a Freshman at Klein Oak High School. I love to go hunting and fishing with my family, watching my son Myles play baseball, and Mason showing his animals at the Klein FFA Livestock and Project Show. Tonna Chavez – Developmental Assistant I was born and raised in Houston, Texas and have lived in and around the Houston area my entire life. After graduating from Klein High School, I attended North Harris County College (now known as Lone Star College). I have been working in Klein ISD for about 15 years and have been in my current position as an A/B Developmental Aide for the last 13 or so of those years. I did marry my high school sweetheart, though unfortunately, after many years of marriage we went our separate ways. But, we were blessed with 7 great children (nope, that is not a typo!), and a 4 1/2 year old grandson! Yet God had another surprise in store for me, about 3 years ago, I began yet another chapter in my life, as I met the man who has become the love of my life! So, all in all I am truly a happy camper! I am so very grateful and delighted to be coming to Mahaffey Elementary and I am truly looking forward to an exciting new year! Coming soon Dace Durante – Speech Pathologist I have been a Speech Language Pathologist for Klein ISD for 18 years. My passion is working with three to five year olds with severe speech disorders. My goal is to eliminate their speech problems before they start kindergarten. I work closely with families for carry over of acquired speech skills into the home environment. I love working with teachers to determine communication needs in the classroom in each grade level. I have two daughters and five grandchildren- all boys!! I love horses and being outside. My four horses keep me busy after school and on weekends. I always say "My therapist lives in a barn!" Heather Johnson – Resource/Co-Teacher Howdy everyone!! My name is Heather Johnson and I will be part of the Special Education team at Mahaffey. I will be serving as a resource and classroom co-teacher. I am so excited to serve in this position and to be a Mahaffey Scottie. I grew up in Houston and went to school in Aldine ISD. I am a born and raised Aggie since both of my parents grew up in Aggieland. I graduated from Texas A&M with my degree in Management and followed with my certification in teaching. I am coming to Mahaffey with 13 years of teaching experience in 1st - 4th grades. My passion is working with students in all settings and helping them reach their fullest potential. We are all winners!! I am also a mom to three crazy boys who are 15, 10 and 8. They keep me very busy and on my toes. If I'm not at school, I'm usually at the baseball field with my boys. My only girl is my yorkie and she is as much of a mess as my boys. I am so looking forward to starting the school year and can't wait to meet all of our new Mahaffey Scotties!! It's going to be a very exciting year! Christine Lummus – Licensed Specialist School Psychologist (LSSP) I am so excited to join the Mahaffey team and be in a new home for work! I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science from Texas A&M and later my Master’s degree in psychology from Houston Baptist University. I received my Specialist in School Psychology from University of Houston, Clear Lake and have been honored to serve in Klein ISD for 23 years. I most recently came from Brill Elementary, and enjoyed working with children and families in this community. I look forward to opening a new school, and working in the Mahaffey community. I am married and have two daughters, Madison a junior at Klein Oak, and Sarah an 8th grader at Doerre. We enjoy time together as a family watching our girls cheer and dance. Jennifer Martin – Support Assistant I am originally from Fresno, California. My family and I moved here in 1998. I graduated from Magnolia High School in 2000. There, I met my husband Jaime. We have been together for 17 years, married for 11 years. We have two boys, both of which will be at Mahaffey. Jason is 9, and will be in 4th grade. Jacob is 8, and will be in 3rd grade. We have a yellow lab named Bob and are expecting a kitten in August! I have been with Klein, in the special ed department for 4 years. I feel that god has put me exactly where I am meant to be. Working with special needs children is something I was born to do. I not only love my SPED kids at school, but I love my Sped kids at home. That's right, both of my boys have Autism, which makes for a crazy and fun house. We love to go to the movies, go out to eat, and we love baseball. I am beyond excited to be at this amazing school with such wonderful teachers, and amazing students. I am glad to be P.L.A.I.D. Lisa Merillat – Developmental Teacher I am so excited to be a part of the Mahaffey Scotties! I was born in Connecticut and then lived up and down the east coast while I was growing up. I actually went to 16 different schools! I have been married to my wonderful husband Mike for 38 years. We have 4 children and two dogs. I love to read, walk on the beach and spend time boating on the lake. I graduated from SHSU and have been teaching in the field of special education for 20 years. I have such a passion for working with students who have special needs. I don't think anything gets me as excited as seeing one of my students accomplish a goal. The smiles on their faces give me unspeakable joy. Leah Ripley – Developmental Teacher I feel blessed to be a Mahaffey Scottie in a new school with the latest and greatest of everything! I know I'm fortunate to continue working as a team member alongside the wonderful group of young students I “get” to spend my days sharing the love of learning with! I was born and raised in Minnesota and South Dakota. I moved to Houston during my junior year of high school, attended Klein High and then graduated from Spring High. I received my B.S. degree from The University of Texas and started teaching Special Education in 1999. When I’m not working I love spending time with my 3 adult children or my other family members. We all love riding bikes, swimming, reading books, talking, or just sharing time together in the kitchen or playing games. I know that this year is going to be one of those years you look back on as one of the best! Sarah Shartle – Case Manager/Diagnostician I am honored to introduce myself as the Educational Diagnostician/Case Manager of Mahaffey Elementary. I began my career in education after graduating from Baylor University in 2001. After working as a third and fourth grade teacher, I made the decision to further my education. I earned my Masters of Education from the University of St. Thomas through a cohort in Klein and am excited to return to the area. I have most recently been working as an Educational Diagnostician in Huntsville ISD. I am passionate about serving students with disabilities and helping their parents/guardians assist in their educational needs. I believe that all children are capable of learning and should be afforded the appropriate opportunities. Staci Snellman – Resource/Co-Teacher I'm thrilled to start a new adventure at Mahaffey. I am proud to say that my roots were established in the Big Sky Country of Montana, and was I fortunate to obtain my degree from the University of Montana. Go Grizzlies!!! After graduating from college, I started my career in San Antonio where I taught for six years. My love for the outdoors and mountains led me to my next opportunity in Anchorage, Alaska to teach for 4 years. The last twelve years of my career have been spent in Klein ISD. My husband, Luke and I have three wonderful children: Shaelyn, Alea and Trace. The joy they bring into our lives is endless! Their activities keep us constantly on the move from the minute we leave work. I am very excited to get to know our students and families at Mahaffey. It is going to be a great place for your children to learn! Counselor Jennifer Matus – Guidance Counselor I am originally from the Dallas area and a graduate of Plano East Senior High School. I attended the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘Em Horns!) where I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master of Science degree in Social Work. I moved to the Houston area in 1999 when I married my husband Brian. I began my teaching career in Klein in 2000 teaching 1st grade for 7 years. I obtained my Texas Counseling Certification in 2003. I worked as an intermediate school counselor for 4 years and have been an elementary school counselor for the past 5 years. Brian and I are blessed to have two beautiful daughters, Lauren who is 13 and Madison who is 10. We are also the recent owners of a little Cavapoo puppy named Rolly who has instantly become a member of our family! As a school counselor I am fortunate to work with every student on campus throughout the year. I am passionate about collaborating with students, teachers, parents and the community to create a nurturing learning environment where students can thrive socially and excel academically. I believe it is through strengthening positive character traits students grow and transform into leaders. I am thrilled to begin this new adventure as a Mahaffey Scottie and look forward to getting to know all of you and your children this year! Literacy Specialist Charla Wilson – Reading Specialist I grew up right here in Spring, Texas and attended Klein schools growing up. It is such a privilege to get to teach in the district I grew up in! I attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. I graduated from Sam Houston in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. I have been teaching in Klein ISD ever since. I find joy in spending time with my family, being outdoors, working out, and reading. My husband Gary and I have been married since 2013. I am a step-mother to two amazing girls, Kylie and Ashlyn. This will be my sixth year of teaching in Klein ISD, and I am excited to start a new journey in my teaching career as the literacy specialist. I am extremely excited to get to know you and your child. I am looking forward to an amazing school year! I will be the literacy specialist. Clinic Amy Hanks – Clinic Assistant I grew up in Lake Charles, LA. I graduated from McNeese State University. In 2002, Texas became my home. My husband, Jonathan, and I have 3 boys. Ryan is a student at Doerre Intermediate, Kade is a student at Doerre Intermediate, and Jace is a Mahaffey student. On the weekends, you can find us at a ball field watching the boys play. I am excited and proud to be a part of this amazing school! Diane Hudson – School Nurse/R.N. I am over the moon excited to be the new School Nurse for Mahaffey Elementary School! I attended Klein schools from Kindergarten until I was a Sophomore in High School. I then attended the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston where I received my degree in Nursing. I absolutely love being a nurse! Outside of nursing I love spending all of my free time with my amazing family, husband Clint and our 3 beautiful children Keeley (9), Hunter (7) and Jase (2). I feel so incredibly blessed to be the school nurse of Mahaffey and I am so excited to be a part of the Scotties! Office Staff Taisha Aponte-Colon – Registrar/Attendance I am totally excited to be a part of the Mahaffey Scotties and serve the students and families of Mahaffey Elementary. I am originally from New York City, and moved to Houston with my family 5 years ago. I have been happily married since 2001 to Leo Colon and have 6 beautiful children (Aaron, Isaiah, Elijah, Matthew, Leah & Khloe). For the past 3 years I have been working within Klein ISD and have met wonderful students, parents and worked with an amazing faculty & staff at Brill Elementary. I'm looking forward to having a wonderful and successful year with you and your children at Mahaffey. I'm glad to be P.L.A.I.D!!! Shannon Fortunato – Front Office I am thrilled to join the Front Office/Workroom staff at Mahaffey. I attended Klein ISD schools from K-12 (Brill Elementary, Kleb and Doerre Intermediate, and Klein High School where I met my high school sweetheart and husband of 20 years, Tim). I earned a BBA in Marketing from Sam Houston State University and worked at HewlettPackard for ten years. We have three children: Blake/Junior at Klein Oak, Sydney/7th Grader at Krimmel, and Brody/2nd grader here at Mahaffey. I was blessed to be able to stay home with them for many years, but now, I’m ready for a wonderful new adventure at Mahaffey. For fun, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, baseball, photography, eating Mexican food, the great outdoors, junking in Round Top, cooking, and doing anything crafty! I’m looking forward to this exciting opening year, and meeting lots of new faces! Vaquetta Hudson – Textbook Secretary/Front Office I am a native of Los Angeles, CA who attended general and higher education in that great state! I moved to Austin, TX in the early 90’s and began working in education in 2007in Manor ISD. I am connected to the greatest, most kind and humble man who happens to call me wife. We’ve been blessed with three awesome children, Michael, Marcus and Makayla. In 2014 my husband’s job transferred our family to the Houston area and I joined the Klein ISD family this school year. I’m thankful to be a part of this trend-setting experience and looking forward to us being the best! I enjoy working with people of all backgrounds, serving in ministry and have helping hands. My motto is, we are better together! Anjali Khanna – Principal’s Secretary/Financial Secretary It is a privilege and honor to be a part of Mahaffey Elementary opening. I am truly enjoying working as the Principal's secretary and look forward to the various first year events as we welcome a new staff and the community! What a great way to start my 19th year in Klein!!! After earning a B.A. from Bombay University, I moved with my husband to Spring Texas 35 years ago and call Houston my home. I have two wonderful children, a boy and girl who are a product of Klein schools and are married and successfully working in New York city. I also have a cute little grand dog Hudson, who lives with my daughter and son-in law near the river Hudson. As a young mom I taught preschool for 8 years and passed on the love for elementary education, which I see in my children who have graduated with degrees such as Business and Education Policy and are ready to make their contributions to this field in their own special ways. I love spending family time, gardening, traveling, trying new foods and cuisines. However, this year my focus is to get Mahaffey off to a great start, making sure all staff members, office buddies and students have all instructional supplies, equipment and things they need for a great beginning! Let's make Mahaffey Elementary a school of Champions!!! Emily Kikuchi – Educational Assistant/Workroom Hi Scotties! I am so excited to be a part of this amazing Mahaffey team! My name is Emily Kikuchi and I will be working in the workroom and as an aide in the classroom. I am a home grown product of Klein schools and I'm thrilled to be back! I left Texas for many years to attend Brigham Young University and then live in Utah and Hawaii. But once I had children I knew the great Lone Star State and Klein ISD was the only place for us! My girls are 7 years old and are thrilled to be 2nd grade Scotties! Keagan and Riley are my whole world and I know Mahaffey will provide the very best that Klein ISD has to offer them! Riley is special needs and will surely light up the halls of Mahaffey with her smile! Keagan can't wait to make new friends and memories! All three of us are glad to be PLAID! Chantel Krenek – Educational Assistant/Workroom I am so excited and blessed to be a part of the Mahaffey family this coming school year! As an Educational Assistant, I can’t wait to meet all our new “Scottie” students and their families! I love being able to interact with all the students - getting to know them and seeing them grow throughout the year. I have been married for 14 years and have three wonderful children! I love spending time with my family and friends. I know this is going to be a fun year for all us “Scottie’s”! I will be in the teacher workroom. Administration Dayna Hernandez – Principal I am blessed beyond measure to be the Mahaffey Principal! As a proud product of Klein ISD, I attended K-12th grade in our incredible school district. I am beginning my 20th year in Klein ISD, after serving as a teacher at Kuehnle, a technology trainer, an Assistant Principal at Krimmel Intermediate and Theiss Elementary, and Principal at Brill Elementary. My relentless spirit to drive a positive culture into schools that foster innovation and focus on student achievement, are all qualities I strive to live by each day I serve students, teachers and my school community. I am attending Rice University with the REEP program (Rice Executive Education Program) to further my knowledge of utilizing business principles into rebranding public education practices. I was recently honored as Klein ISD's Elementary Principal of the Year, and feel so humbly proud to work with amazing leaders in Klein ISD. Outside of dedicating myself to Mahaffey, you will find me supporting my husband, Coach Bo Hernandez, on the Klein Oak baseball field, as well as faithfully serving at my church, Champion Forest Baptist North. I have two awesome sons, Tony, a senior at the University of Houston, and Tyler, a junior at Klein Oak, as well as a spunky white lab, Scout. We are in for an EPIC start to shaping young lives into future-ready leaders as spirited Mahaffey Scotties! Christy Petross – Associate Principal I am so excited to be serving as Associate Principal at Mahaffey. I have been in education for 24 years serving as a teacher and administrator at all three levels including Klein Oak, Ulrich, Benignus, and Oak Ridge. I am a graduate of Texas A&M University where I was a member of the Texas A&M Women's Track Team for four years and also served one year as an Aggie Hostess. I am married to my husband Brent, and together we have two girls, Paige and Brooke, both who are active in track and cheer. We love to travel together and enjoy hanging out as a family. I was raised in a family of educators and coaches and I believe that all students need to be motivated and encouraged in order to be successful! I believe 100% that helping students set goals and achieve them both now and in the future is a vital part of my role as an administrator at Mahaffey and in KISD.
