LEAVE YOUR MARK IN SAN ANTONIO
Welcome to the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society’s™
(WOCN®) 47th Annual Conference. This year we are celebrating our WOC
specialty and you! You influence others around you every day. Take a
moment to network and gain knowledge to help you leave your mark on
patients and your practice day in and day out.
The WOCN Society is constantly focused on helping you leave your mark
on patients, but we want you to know that you leave your mark on us as
well! You spoke and we listened!
To provide the most valuable experience to our Annual Conference attendees
in 2015 and beyond, we have made a few improvements to our program.
Here’s what’s new in San Antonio:
Member Spotlight Sessions: Last fall, we gave our members the opportunity
to submit session proposals through our first ever “Call for Sessions.”
Many members took advantage of this new opportunity and four selected
members are sharing their expertise and knowledge by being a speaker in
this year’s program.
Earn extra credits in the Poster Hall: This year we have select posters
available for CE credit in the Poster Hall. Attendees will have the
opportunity to earn extra CE credits by visiting these designated posters.
More advanced education: Our planning committee worked hard this
year to ensure that there is a great selection of education for all levels,
focusing on getting more advanced practice topics woven into our
conference program.
Nightmares General Session: This year we have expanded our popular
Nightmares on Ostomy Street to a General Session that will include a
variety of complex conditions that many of us often encounter. This has
given us the opportunity to expand beyond ostomy and talk about patient
nightmares in all areas. We hope you join us at Nightmares on Alamo
Plaza on Tuesday afternoon.
Leave your mark on social media and tell your friends all about your
conference experience. Share pictures and updates on Facebook,
Twitter and LinkedIn! Don’t forget to use the hashtag #WOCN15.
We hope that this conference helps you see how you leave your mark
on your patients, colleagues and professional organization as well as
reminds you how they all leave their mark on you.

We believe that to make
a real difference, we have to
think outside the bandage.
It’s easy to stick with the status quo, but to truly champion skin and create better patient outcomes, Coloplast is
continuing to push boundaries. We promote the health of all skin by offering the only end-to-end skin care solution,
from prevention to intervention. And we’ve simplified our products and formularies, so there’s less waste and less risk
of making a mistake. That’s thinking outside the bandage. That’s Coloplast. To learn more visit webelieveinskin.com.

We believe better outcomes
can be achieved with
five products. Not fifty.
In the search for better outcomes, we often find the most effective solutions are the simplest ones. So at
Coloplast, we’ve been doing more with less. Fewer ingredients. Fewer products. And in doing so, we’ve found
that greater efficiency doesn’t diminish the quality of our products, it enhances the experience of using them.

Perhaps you have seen commercials on television by
plaintiff attorneys who solicit clients whose “family
members have been injured in a nursing home” or
patients who have “developed bedsores under the care
of a health provider.” These advertisements infer that all
patients who develop pressure ulcers have been neglected
and that lawsuits against providers can yield monetary
results for family members. This presentation will address
the elements of malpractice and provide scenarios for
patients in home care, hospitals and long-term care
facilities in which WOC Nurses may be called upon to

Wound, ostomy and continence nursing is one of the
few specialty nursing practices that is unique to nursing.
The roots of our professional heritage can be traced to
the rise of enterostomal therapy in the mid-20th century.
From these proud roots, the specialty of WOC nursing
has grown to a globally recognized specialty nursing
practice that is practiced in all care settings by both expert
and advanced practice nurses. Join your colleagues for a
multimedia review of the history of our specialty practice
and a celebration of some its most historically relevant

Peristomal Skin Deserves

The importance of peristomal skin health in ostomy care can’t be overstated.
The condition of the skin greatly affects how well the skin barrier can adhere,
as well as the general comfort and well-being of the patient. Unfortunately,
peristomal skin problems are far too common. Maintaining healthy peristomal
skin right from the start is the ultimate goal. Our newest skin barrier is
designed to do this. The session will showcase innovative technology with a

Doctor’s Orders, and
Allowables, and HCPCs – OH
MY!
As healthcare providers, our focus is on patient outcomes. In order to assist our
patients with ostomies/wounds in the acquisition of their supplies, we must
have a general understanding of the current process and requirements. This
conference presentation provides information to providers that empower
them with basic knowledge of the variations of systems, HCPC’s and allowables
to promote success. The process begins with the provider determining the
appropriate products for their patient and their lifestyle. Once this is decided, the
provider may need to work with the patient, supplier and insurance company
to ensure the patient gets the supplies they require. This can be complicated
when the patient has a condition that may necessitate additional supplies above
the “allowable.” There are guidelines that will be reviewed with conference
attendees that anyone can utilize to assist their patients with continuity of supplies
as well as the documentation necessary to ensure the patient receives their
supplies whether they are within the “allowable” or exceeding the “allowable”
range within their insurance coverage. In conclusion, this knowledge can assist the
provider in the process of obtaining supplies for the ostomy/wound patients and
help them to achieve the goal of improved patient outcomes for this population.

Introducing
Dignity Briefs with Curly Fiber
®
In standard industry briefs, incontinence creates an unhealthy alkaline environment
(up to pH 8.0) that can break down the skin’s protective acid mantle, allowing
contaminants to penetrate skin cells. Dignity Briefs with Curly Fiber instantly reduce
the high pH of voids and maintain a skin-friendly pH 4.5 to 5.5 for more than five
hours, which can be especially beneficial during sleep.1

care setting, a pH demonstration, or a sales visit via our website at

ACTIVE SKIN PROTECTION means these briefs include Curly Fiber, which instantly converts the high pH value of
voids to a skin-friendly pH 5.5; hypoallergenic materials, which have an extremely low potential for causing
allergic reactions; superabsorbent polymer to lock-in fluids and maintain a healthy, dry environment; and
cloth-like, breathable side panels for increased air-permeability and optimum skin health.

The Hercules Patient Repositioning System™ allows
a single caregiver to pull a patient up-in-bed with the
push of a button providing pressure relief in less than 10
seconds. When the head of a bed is raised gravity causes
the patient to slide down. As this occurs, pressure rises
in high-risk areas. The amount of time a patient remains
down in bed increases their risk for HAPUs. Now with
Hercules, one caregiver can return a patient to a safe lowpressure position every time they walk in the room.

Shouldn’t we protect skin
as well as skin protects us?
Skin doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Easily overlooked. Often taken for granted. It’s our largest organ, but we
don’t recognize its importance until something goes wrong. At Coloplast, we’re focused on protecting the body’s
first line of defense across the full continuum of care. From prevention to intervention. Because if we don’t stand up

By focusing on what matters,
we’re doing more with less.
You don’t need more products to raise the bar for skin care. At Coloplast, we’re achieving better outcomes with less.
Fewer ingredients. Simpler formularies. Less risk of skin breakdown. And less waste can result in lower costs.
Every day, in hospitals and facilities around the world, we’re proving that the most effective solutions are often the
simplest ones. To learn more visit webelieveinskin.com.
