The reason for its production is that of the imagery relating to Australia in the papers, 55% concerns Victoria, 30% pertains to New South Wales, and just 15% involves South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia at a ratio of approximately 5.0%, 3.5%, 3.5% and 1.0% respectively (the remaining 2.0% is accounted for by the non-colony specific subject, Imaginative Fiction Illustration). Out of a concern that these less covered colonies may seem a bit lost in the Index, and conversely, to make it easier for researchers interested in imagery from just one or another of these colonies, this cut-and-paste collection of the imagery relating to Tasmania has been compiled. There are three factors which contribute to explaining why South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia received less coverage in the papers. Firstly, the nexus of population and wealth, for following the 1850s goldrushes, Victoria and New South Wales were the two dominant colonies. In fact, the papers can be seen as one of the legacies of gold derived wealth, as moving onto the second factor, three of the four most successful papers were published in Melbourne. The most successful was the Illustrated Australian News (1861-96), and along with the Illustrated Melbourne Post (1862-68) and the Australasian Sketcher (1873-89), it was inevitable that there would be a focus on events, places and people relating to Victoria over other colonies. The fourth paper was the Illustrated Sydney News (1864-92). Of the other colonies, only South Australia produced its own paper, the Illustrated Adelaide News (1875-95). However, virtually all its illustrations were reprints from the Illustrated Australian News, and so it was not included in the indexing process. (For a more extensive account of the publishing history of the papers, please refer to the Index.) The third reason for less coverage of South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia was their historical development, and its reflection in the papers. Both South Australia and Tasmania were more developed than Victoria at the midcentury mark in terms of settlement, pastoral industry and culture. In the wake of gold, though, Victoria developed very quickly, as evidenced by imagery covering an increasingly wide range of subjects. South Australia continued to develop at a much slower pace, whilst Tasmania went into economic stagnation. In the papers, this was seen with a moderate level of coverage of South Australia in the 1860s, and then a slight dropping off over the following three decades, whereas with Tasmania, coverage in the 1860s was comparable to South Australia, and then a real decline. By contrast, with Queensland there was relatively little coverage in the 1860s, but this changed in the 1870s and ‘80s in line with its historical development. Finally, with Western Australia, coverage was minimal until the emergence of its goldfields in the early 1890s, which sparked a population rush to the west. Introduction At this point, it should be noted that this Introduction is an almost complete re-write of the Introduction in the Index, and readers should refer to that Introduction for a full account of the rationale for its compilation. Very briefly, however, this index is medium specific in that it only indexes imagery relating to Tasmania which appears in the illustrated newspapers. It does not refer to photographs or paintings. Secondly, the index is subject-based, with additional place/region and time/date dimensions. Thirdly, all available information concerning the creators associated with an image – illustrators, photographers, artists (virtually all engravers were based in either Melbourne or Sydney) – is included with the image title entry, and then in the case of Tasmania-based creators, this information is cross referenced to the separate Creators listing at the end of this index. As for illustrators who were visiting from the Victorian or New South Wales papers, the reader will need to refer to the Index for listings of their images. There are two final points to be made. The ‘Guide to Index’ has been lifted directly from the Index (although without the maps of Victoria and New South Wales), and this will help serve to place this index within the context of the full Index. As for accessing the actual images, this can be done either on-line or by using microfilm. If using the on-line alternative, all images from the Illustrated Australian News, Illustrated Melbourne Post and Australasian Sketcher should be available on either the State Library of Victoria catalogue or the Picture Australia website, by typing in the full title of the image required. Unfortunately, images from the Illustrated Sydney News have not yet been digitalised, and so cannot be accessed on-line. The great disadvantage with accessing images on-line is that only the illustration is available, and not the text of the accompanying article, which often includes much additional information about the image. Herein lies the considerable advantage of using microfilm. However, at the time of writing, the indexer is not sure about the availability of microfilms of the Illustrated Australian News, Illustrated Melbourne Post, Australasian Sketcher and Illustrated Sydney News in the state libraries of South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia. It is hoped this index will provide easier and simpler access to the imagery in colonial Australian illustrated newspapers relating to Tasmania. 2 Guide to Index This index is comprised of two sections; a subject-based index and a creator-based index. With the subject-based index, illustrations can be searched for at three points of entry: by subject, by place and by date. Alternatively, the creator-based index can be used to search images produced by an illustrator, photographer, artist or engraver. With both sections of the index, it is the illustration title which is the base unit upon which the index revolves. This guide is divided into five parts: firstly, a description of a sample illustration title; then explanations of the three levels of entry into the subject index – by subject, place, and date – and the last part explaining the creators‟ index. EXPLANATION OF TITLES The illustration titles used in the index reproduce exactly the titles of the illustrations in the newspapers. One of the great strengths of newspaper illustration titles is the degree of information they convey, even without being able to see the image. This means that the title can stand alone in giving the user of the index a reasonable idea of what the subject of the image is going to be. As the user then becomes more familiar with the images, s/he will be able to increasingly judge what the actual image might depict. Each title entry carries, in abbreviated form, further information about the illustration, such as title and date of the newspaper it comes from, whether it is a single or multiple image illustration, if it was reprinted in another newspaper, cross-reference details if the illustration has been assigned to more than one subject heading, and any information about who was involved in creating the image (illustrator, photographer, artist, engraver), and further information, if necessary, about the unseen image to assist the user in understanding its subject. It is to be noted that no attempt has been made to correct discrepancies in the spelling of places, creator‟s names, and variations in creator‟s initials. The following is a sample image title entry, from the RURAL subject heading, and listed in the Victoria/Melbourne region. Drove of cattle for the Melbourne market, IAN, 13/8/72 (Repr ISN, 19/3/73, CR Streetscapes, ill. L.V. Richardson)) [Cattle being driven through Melbourne CBD at night] Guide to Index i Drove of cattle for the Melbourne market The title of the image as found in the newspaper. If the illustration is a multiple image illustration, then the number of images is given as the first piece of information in the brackets, or the sub-titles of each image are listed below the main title. As a rule of thumb, sub-titles are listed when their meaning is clear, whereas the number of images is given if the meanings are not clear, as often occurs with humourous illustrations, when image and text need to be seen together in order that meaning can be made. ii IAN, 13/8/72 IAN is Illustrated Australian News. This is one of the acronyms used for the titles of the newspapers, followed by the date when the illustration was printed. A list of all acronyms for newspaper titles is given in Appendix I of this Guide. With the date, the year is given just as the last two digits, on the understanding that all such dates relate to the nineteenth century ie. (18)72. Page numbers have not been given due to variations in page numbering between the different papers. Most issues of papers carried only ten to twelve illustrations, so title and date have been considered sufficient for locating an image. iii Repr ISN, 19/3/73 Repr means Reprinted. Many of the images in the Illustrated Melbourne Post (186268) and the Illustrated Australian News (1861-96) were reprinted by the Illustrated Sydney News (1864-92), especially before 1878, and to a much lesser degree vice versa. With this example, the illustration was printed in the Illustrated Australian News on 13 August 1872, and then reprinted by the Illustrated Sydney News seven months later on 19 March 1873. Usually the reprint occurred within a month. Very occasionally, there will be an illustration that is obviously sourced from Victoria but gets published in the Illustrated Sydney News before it is published in the Illustrated Australian News, or vice versa. The paper in which the illustration first appears is always given first. iv CR Streetscapes CR means Cross Referenced. In this case, the illustration is concerned with stockmen driving a mob of cattle to market along a Melbourne CBD street in the middle of the night. So whilst the primary subject matter of the illustration has meant it being classified as RURAL, the image is also of interest from the perspective of the STREETSCAPES subject heading. All cross referenced images are indicated by an asterisk at the beginning of the title in its secondary subject heading. With nearly all cross referencing, the title is listed in the same region in its secondary subject heading as in its primary subject heading. So that with the sample entry, because it was initially listed in RURAL/Melbourne, it is cross referenced to STREETSCAPES/Melbourne. 4 Guide to Index v ill. L.V. Richardson ill. is the abbreviation for illustrator, in this case, L.V. Richardson. It was customary up until about 1870 for the illustrator‟s name to be followed by the abbreviation „Del‟, meaning delineator or illustrator, and for it to be located in the bottom right corner of the illustration. By contrast, the name of the engraver (abbreviated as engr.), would be followed by „Sc‟, meaning sculptor or engraver and usually located in the bottom left corner of the image. If the image was engraved after a photograph or a painting, attribution to the photographer or artist (abbreviated as ph. and art. respectively) was given in either the caption of the illustration, or in the text of the accompanying article. In situations where only initials or a monogram is given, if the identity of the creator is known, then the initials are given, followed by the surname in brackets eg. the engraver Samuel Calvert usually used the initials S.C., which is recorded in the index as S.C(alvert). If the identity is not known, then only the initials, or monogram, are given. It is also pertinent to note the distinction between just initials, followed by the remainder of the surname in brackets, when there is no spacing eg. G.R.A(shton); and a full name, when there is a spacing between first (and second) name initials and surname eg. G.R. Ashton. Finally, with some creators, there are variations in the format of their initials eg. DAP(lyn) or Dap(lyn). These variations are listed under the one name. Any creator whose name appears in Joan Kerr (ed.), The Dictionary of Australian Artists: Painters, Sketchers, Photographers and Engravers to 1870, (1992), will have the acronym (DAA) after their name to indicate that they are listed in this seminal book, and biographical information can be read about them. All images with any attribution to an illustrator, engraver, photographer, or artist, are also listed in the separate Creators Index where all names are listed alphabetically under the colony in which they worked vi [Cattle being driven through Melbourne CBD at night] Any information recorded in square brackets is additional information provided by the indexer to clarify the subject matter of the illustration if this is not immediately clear from the title. vii Half-tone process Not applicable with this example, however, after the introduction of the half-tone process in 1888, any photographs reproduced as halftones are indicated as „ph x ht, whilst gouaches reproduced by halftone are indicated as „g x ht‟. The advantage of hand-drawn gouaches over photographs was that they reproduced with much greater clarity. 5 Guide to Index SEARCHING BY SUBJECT There are twenty-seven subject headings by which images can be searched, plus four supplementary subject headings to which some images have been cross-referenced due to particular features. For further accessibility, the twenty-seven primary subject headings have been grouped into five themes reflecting different aspects of colonial Australian society and culture. The first four relate directly to Australia whilst the fifth theme comprises subjects that are non-Australian, or more simply, relate to overseas, for example, images relating to New Zealand. Some of these images will have an indirect connection with Australia. If there is one rule of thumb to searching for images by subject it is to look for the image under the heading which would seem the most accessible. This may appear to be stating the obvious, yet uncertainty can easily arise. To give two examples, an image of a theatre will appear under ARTS, not BUILDINGS; an image of a post office will be under TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATIONS not BUILDINGS, however, in both cases, such images have been cross-referenced to BUILDINGS. With two more examples, an image of a seaside resort will be under LEISURE, not PANORAMAS; and an image of a smelter will be in MINING, not MANUFACTURING. Again, such titles eill usuall be cross referenced. Conversely, some lateral thinking is required if a subject is not listed. For example, if looking for images relating to politics, politicians are listed under PORTRAITS, parliament house under BUILDINGS, and proceedings of parliament under MISCELLANEOUS as there were very few such images. The thematic headings are listed below, along with the subject headings belonging to each theme, all followed by a brief discussion of the type of imagery to be found under each heading. The percentage figure indicates the proportion of images belonging to the heading relative to the overall index. MATERIAL CULTURE 30.7% Comprising nearly one-third of all images in the papers, subject headings in this bracket are concerned with the depiction of progress in the colonies as evidenced by the development of a built environment in the wilderness that had been pre-settlement Australia. Images of new buildings were the primary indicator of progress, however, it was also to be seen in images of panoramic views of cities and towns, and streetscapes. One generalisation about this bracket is that the human dimension of colonial life is quite small, this becoming much more apparent in the following Civic Culture theme. PANORAMAS 2.8 % An important category in the context of colonial progress due to the opportunity it provides to trace the growth of capital cities and regional towns from a local vantage 6 Guide to Index point, and later, with the marvellous birds-eye views. It also follows the spread of towns as colonial economies turned from gold to agriculture. STREETSCAPES 1.7 % An interesting category, for in addition to images of streets lined with buildings, it also includes a strong human dimension with varied images of urban street life. Images of poverty, since destitute people were usually associated with the street, are also included. BUILDINGS 7.5 % A broad category that covers all types of buildings: public and private, commercial and cultural. Not listed under this subject heading are images of railway-related buildings and post offices, both of which appear under TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATIONS; images of stone laying ceremonies for buildings, which appear under CIVIC OCCASIONS; and factories which come under MANUFACTURING. COMMERCE 0.9 % A category that is almost a sub-category of BUILDINGS except that it highlights the human aspect of business such as market scenes, wool auctions, shop interiors. MANUFACTURING 1.3 % A revealing category in the way it chronicles the emergence and diversification of manufacturing, especially in Victoria with its protectionist policy. A significant proportion of the titles listed under this category are multiple image illustrations depicting the stages in the manufacturing of a product. EXHIBITIONS 3.6 % A substantial category given the role exhibitions played in showcasing colonial progress. In addition to the imagery of the intercolonial and international exhibitions, it also includes illustrations of agricultural shows. GARDENS .9 % A small category concerned with imagery depicting the development of the various botanic gardens in the colonies as well as private horticultural activity such as flower shows and commercial nurseries. MONUMENTS 0.6 % A small category that deals with monuments and plaques commemorating notable people in the eyes of the colonists: royalty, politicians, explorers. 7 Guide to Index MARITIME 6.6 % Broad ranging category of images relating to maritime transport and communications activity: shipping, navigational aids, wharf side activity, plus commercial fishing and marine disasters. Also included in this category are images concerning maritime activity on inland waters, most notably the Murray-Darling river system. TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATIONS 4.8 % A diverse category concerned with land-based transport and communications such as railways, road transport (especially bridges), the telegraph and postal services. CIVIC CULTURE 29.5% The subject headings in this bracket also make up nearly another one-third of imagery in the papers, with all of them pertaining to the human dimension of colonial society as opposed to the built-environment aspect of the previous Material Culture theme. Civic Culture can be best appreciated as the public manifestation of the pride colonial society took in creating an off-shoot of the British Empire in a New World environment. In reflecting the activities and interests of the targeted audience of the newspapers, the majority of images depict the upper and middle-class levels of colonial society. This also means that most of the images are concerned with depicting the urban culture of the capital cities as opposed to the rural culture seen in the following Frontier Culture theme. CIVIC OCCASIONS 3.6 % This group of images is particularly revealing of how colonial men and women socialised in their non-working hours. It covers presentations and testimonials held to recognise notable people in the colonies, funerals, processions, the arrival or departure of eminent people, opening ceremonies, balls and political rallies. PORTRAITS 6.3 % A self-explanatory category concerned with the depiction of men who figured prominently in colonial society: governors, politicians, and clergy. There is also the occasional image of women, which have been cross-referenced to the Supplementary subject heading, WOMEN and CHILDREN. The ARTS 5.6 % An extensive category that comprises images relating to theatre, music and fine arts. LEISURE 10.4 % A very extensive category comprising imagery relating to sport - cricket, horseracing, rowing, football - outdoor leisure such as picnics, the seaside and mountain resorts, and indoors leisure such as circuses and fetes. 8 Guide to Index MILITARY & NAVAL 3.6 % With a significant proportion of defence activity in the colonies being based on a volunteer militia and naval reserve, which colonists joined as an alternative to playing sport, it is appropriate to include this category in Civic Culture as opposed to Material Culture. This is despite the category also including images of defence infrastructure such as forts. However, most images relate to military reviews, camps and tournaments and naval exercises. FRONTIER CULTURE 17.5% A smaller group in terms of aggregate percentage compared with the previous two themes, yet providing some of the most identifiable imagery relating to colonial Australia. For whereas the Material Culture and Civic Culture themes are concerned mostly with the urban experience, Frontier Culture comprises imagery depicting frontier and rural interaction with the Australian landscape. It is also pertinent that images relating to the two most important forms of export income for colonial Australia, gold and wool, are both in this section. LANDSCAPES 5.3 % This category encompasses the full variety of the Australian landscape, from harsh inland deserts to forested mountain ranges, from wilderness scenes such as waterfalls to settled rural vistas, from newly discovered parts of the continent to urban fringe beauty spots. INDIGENOUS PEOPLE 1.7 % On the other side of the frontier, were Australia‟s indigenous inhabitants. Any images pertaining to indigenous people are included in this category, ranging from depictions of a pre-contact hunter-gatherer mode of life, frontier conflict and post contact lifestyles on mission stations. RURAL 3.0 % As much as anything this category celebrates the bushman, whether in the guise of the itinerant shearer or the sedentary selector. It also includes images of rural work such as droving, timber cutting and crop harvesting. A more unexpected inclusion is imagery of early attempts to control the rabbit plague. MINING 1.8 % The quest for gold dominates this category, and it follows the pattern of initial discoveries in New South Wales and Victoria, to northern Queensland, the Kimberley Ranges and finally Kalgoorlie. In all of these regions, prospectors and alluvial miners were often in the vanguard of European settlement and key players in Frontier Culture. Yet the category also embraces the subsequent emergence of company mining in both settled and remote parts of Australia. It also includes images of all other forms of mining such as copper, silver and coal. 9 Guide to Index NATURAL HISTORY 1.7 % A small yet informative category dealing with colonial Australia‟s evolving appreciation of the country‟s natural history, especially its birds and animals. This evolution begins with a detached, collector-like attitude to natural history which gradually develops into an emotional engagement with particular species; for example, the kookaburra. It also deals with the activities of acclimatization societies with their introduction of European fish, birds and animals. Finally, it concerns the development of exotic animal collections in zoos. NATURAL DISASTERS 2.0 % A self explanatory category which embraces the familiar triumvirate of natural disasters in Australia: fire, flood and drought. It also includes incidents of people being lost in the bush. For the sake of clarity, natural disasters in urban environments are also included in this category, including building fires, even though the cause may not have been natural. CRIME 2.0 % A category dominated by bushrangers and their exploits. Following the capture of the Kelly gang, in 1880, the few images of crime are mostly urban related. This category also includes images concerning the activities of the police and occasional images depicting prisons. SUNDRY 6.2% A grouping of two subject headings comprising illustrations which do not fit in with any of the above subject headings, but nearly all of them relate to colonial Australia. MISCELLANEOUS 4.3 % A collection of images depicting one-off subjects, or images of common subject matter but not in sufficient number to warrant their own subject heading. Many of these images depict the more idiosyncratic aspects of colonial Australian life, and the category should certainly not be dismissed for being likely to lack interest. Most of the images depict the more obscure aspects of Civic Culture. IMAGINATIVE FICTION ILLUSTRATION 1.9 % This category covers all images produced to illustrate serialised fiction in the illustrated newspapers. Much of this fiction was Australian in content and therefore deserves to be included in the index, however, some British novels were also serialised and illustrated. 10 Guide to Index BEYOND AUSTRALIA 14.4% Making up a larger proportion of images in the papers than expected, this bracket of subject headings, comprises all images relating to other parts of the world, both regional, such as New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, and further afield, such as Europe. NEW ZEALAND 6.5 % The large number of images relating to New Zealand is testament to the close relationship between the two leading Australian colonies, New South Wales and Victoria, and New Zealand in the half century before Federation in 1901. The range of subjects with New Zealand imagery, however, is much narrower with the dominant categories being landscapes, buildings, panoramas, maritime and Maoris. Of these, the numerous images of the New Zealand landscape offer a striking contrast to those of the Australian landscape. This is exemplified by the images of mountains, lakes and fiords from the South Island‟s West Coast and Southern Alps, which conformed much more closely to Romantic notions of the sublime landscape compared with Australia‟s much older and relatively featureless landscape. PACIFIC ISLANDS 2.5 % An interesting category for what it reveals of the eastern Australian colonies‟ interest in their neighbouring Pacific islands. The main islands to feature are New Guinea, New Caledonia and Fiji. INTERNATIONAL 5.4 % This category is divided according to continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, America and Antarctica. Images pertaining to Britain, despite it being the „Heart of the Empire‟ are not numerous enough to warrant a separate sub-category. The newsworthiness of most of the images in this heading occurs in its own right, as opposed to having any connection with the Australian colonies; for example, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Where there is a connection, however, it is surprising to realise the extent of connections with Asia and Africa as well as with Europe. The images relating to Antarctica mostly concern shipping in the Southern Ocean. SUPPLEMENTARY These four subject headings have been created to draw particular attention to images belonging to any of the above twenty-seven subject headings that have been crossreferenced into one of these categories because of their importance in their own right. 11 Guide to Index WOMEN and CHILDREN All images in which women and children are the focus, regardless of what they are doing, have been cross-referenced into this category so that they can become a focus of attention in their own right. CHINESE Any images relating to the Chinese have also been cross-referenced into this category. HISTORICAL Images which refer to any dimension of Australia‟s own history have been crossreferenced into this category out of a concern to show what contemporaries perceived to be interesting about their own history. Such images became very common in the 1880s, when Victoria celebrated its half-century and New South Wales its centenary. SUPPLEMENTS All of the major papers periodically produced supplements, which were a broadsheet sized image. These were generally published to coincide with a major event or at Christmas. Readers would often frame them to hang on the walls of their home. SEARCHING BY PLACE Aware that some researchers may wish to search for images relating to a particular location or to compare images of similar subject matter from different regions, the images listed under each subject heading have been divided according to geographical region, initially by colony, and then by regions within the colony. Victoria and New South Wales have been divided into several regions due to the greater number of images relating to these colonies, whereas the other colonies are divided more simply. In addition to these regions there is also a Non-specific section. This is to cater for those images with which the specifics of place are not given. This is usually because the image is a generalised subject for which specific location is not relevant to the meaning of the image; for example, a teamster crossing a creek. Indeed, in the case of the RURAL subject heading, many of the most interesting images are in the Nonspecific section because of their relevance to rural life right across the colony concerned. A listing of all regions in each colony is given in Appendix II of this Guide. 12 Guide to Index SEARCHING BY DATE As with „Searching by Place‟, some researchers may want to search for images for a particular date or year. This can be achieved by going through the Subject Headings, and then, region by region, focusing on finding the year that is being researched. This process will be slow compared with searching by subject or by place, however the option is available. SEARCHING BY CREATOR There will also be researchers who wish to focus on the output of particular illustrators, photographers, artists and engravers. These are listed in the Creators Index, by colony and then profession. At the end of each title entry, the subject heading from which the entry originated is given in capital letters. There are also listings for those who worked in New Zealand and Pacific Islands, and in the case of colonial Australian illustrators who travelled to New Zealand and/or the Pacific Islands (eg. Nicholas Chevalier), their images from these places have also been included with their main body of work. The various Creator professions are briefly described as follows: ILLUSTRATORS The men and women, professional and amateur, employed and freelance, who submitted drawings to the illustrated newspapers for reproduction as engravings. PHOTOGRAPHERS People, who as with illustrators, submitted photographs for reproduction in the illustrated newspapers. ARTISTS People who had produced works in other mediums – oils and watercolours - that were submitted, or chosen from exhibitions, for reproduction. ENGRAVERS The people who reproduced drawings, photographs and paintings as wood engraved illustrations for publication in the newspapers. Also included in this group are the sub-contracted lithographic printing firms that produced the lithographs used for some full-page supplements in the Melbourne papers. 13 Guide to Index Nearly all creators worked in just the one profession, although some worked in two. For example, Samuel Calvert, who was not only a prolific engraver, but also worked as an illustrator. Occasionally he produced an image, particularly double-page supplements, in which he acknowledged himself as both illustrator and engraver, but more often he would include just his monogram, but without reference as to whether he was illustrator, engraver, or both. Although there is no way of really knowing, these images have been listed under his name as an engraver. The acknowledgement of creators by the newspapers was haphazard. Sometimes an illustrator or photographer would be acknowledged but not the engraver, sometimes vice versa. Identification of illustrators and engravers is further complicated by the fact that they would often use initials or a monogram. Some of these have been identified but not all of them, in which case, only the initials are given, especially for illustrators. In the case of images after photographs, there would be the acknowledgement, “After a photograph”, but without the name of the photographer. In these cases, the image is listed under „Photographers – Unknown‟. Artists were always acknowledged, otherwise there would be no way of knowing an image was after a painting as opposed to a drawing or sketch. The image titles listed for each creator in the Creator Index are exactly the same as those in the Subject Index, where they are listed in the colony the creator came from. The only difference is that at the end of each title entry, the subject heading from which the image title originates has been added in capital letters. This will serve to assist in identifying the preferred subjects of illustrators, photographers and artists; for example, F.W. Woodhouse, an artist and occasional illustrator who specialised in depicting race-horses, all of which belong to the LEISURE subject heading. 14 Guide to Index Appendix I Listing of newspaper acronyms, the full name of the newspaper, and its publication period, in chronological order of founding date.* Acronym Title Publication Period (Month/Year & type) ISN Illustrated Sydney News 10/53-6/55, weekly ISA Illustrated Sydney Advertiser 4-6/54, weekly MIN Melbourne Illustrated News 10-11/53, weekly Cassell’s Cassell’s Ill. After 1862, only images from the four main successful papers, the Illustrated Melbourne Post, Illustrated Australian News, Illustrated Sydney News, Australasian Sketcher are included in the index. This means that those newspapers which are not identified by an abbreviation have not been indexed. There were two reasons for not including all papers published after 1862. Some were short-run papers, such as the five-issue Australian Pictorial Weekly, and so considered irrelevant in terms of contributing to the overall range of imagery in the papers; and secondly, a longer-run paper such as the Illustrated Adelaide News which relied on another paper for most of its imagery ie. the Illustrated Australian News, rarely produced an image in its own right, and this would be reprinted in the latter paper anyway. As for the Illustrated London News: Australasian Edition, this was a locally printed copy of the London paper, which once a month included a supplement carrying Australian news and illustrations. 16 Guide to Index Appendix II Listed below are the various regions for each colony.
