Celebrating 100 Years
We officially started
our 100 year celebration with a float in the
Hibbing Jubilee Parade.
Members of the board,
their family and the
Wirtanen family participated in this event.
The float boasted a 4’ x
5’ curling rock made
out of paper mache
that was designed by
club members, Mark
and JoDee Wirtanen.
The club placed second
in the jubilee parade.

Directors:
Message from our President
It’s that time of year
again! Time to start
thinking about curling!
The busy season is upon
us and we are excited to
be celebrating our 100
year anniversary this year.
Also, there are many
things to do before a rock
goes down the ice.
You will notice a few
changes to the club this
year. We have been under construction since
July working diligently on
our new floor and view-

ing wall. For all of the
details, see the Ice Committee/Building Renovation Update article on
page 2.
Registration dates and
dues information can
also be found on page 2.
The dues will remain the
same as last year, and
once again we will be offering a new curler rate.
So, I encourage everyone
to invite your friends,
family & neighbors to
give curling a try. Let’s
increase our membership and keep the Hibbing Curling Club one
of the best clubs around.
I hope that you will have
an excellent recreational
& social experience as a
member of the club this
year. I look forward to
seeing you on the ice
and in the clubhouse.
Good Curling!

Renovation Update:
Summer has been busy for the
curling club—we are well underway
with construction and nearing
completion of our building renovations!
After receiving $1M in funding
last year from the IRRRB, we have
been working with the City of
Hibbing and Mark Wirtanen of
Architectural Resources to renovate the ice arena. We originally
started last fall with replacing our
20+ year old dehumidifiers in the
curling area. Those two units
were replaced with a single, roof
mounted, gas-fired desiccant unit.
That unit was up and running in
January and performed great last
year.
The next step was the floor. Max
Gray Construction was selected to
complete the demo work, with
Commercial Refrigeration selected
to install the new piping and concrete floor. All three previous refrigerated floors (2 concrete, 1

Junior registration will be held on Sunday, December 8th at 1:30 pm with curling at 3:00 pm
sand) were removed, and new fill
brought in. At this time, the contractors are nearly complete with
the new piping installation, and we
are scheduled to pour the new concrete floor on October 8th. New
walkways and dividers will be constructed after the concrete floor is
completed.
The “pebble room” was completely
gutted, and when renovations of
that room are completed, we will
have the ability to remove the
scraper from behind sheet 7 and
store it in a dedicated room of its
own.
The last major part of the project,
in addition to all of the above, was
a new seamless glass viewing wall.
This should greatly increase the
spectator’s view of the curling
sheets. Sorry, the pillars haven’t
moved!
If construction proceeds as
planned, the plant will be turned
on near the end of October and ice
install will begin soon after...with
the target date of November 15th
for the ice to be ready to curl.
With the very busy last couple
months before curling is set to
begin, there are still many things
that need to be done—not to mention EVERYTHING NEEDS TO
BE CLEANED BEFORE THE
SEASON STARTS. If you are
handy with a hammer, a broom, a
mop, or a rag — please get in touch
with any member of the ice committee or a board member. We need
your help!
Save the Date:
Fall membership meeting will
be held on Wednesday, October 23rd, 7:00 pm at the club.
Tentative cleaning days are set
for the evenings of Oct. 14—17
any time after 5:00 pm.
