The YMCA
Building health in spirit, mind and body
Our Charitable Mission
The YMCA is a charity dedicated to providing opportunities for personal growth
in spirit, mind and body and service to others.
Our Vision: Building healthy communities in which individuals and families have opportunities to
reach their full potential.
Our programming in 2015 became very focused and we saw the successful result of this work.
Child Care registration hit an all-time high and Day Camp numbers reached a new record. More
importantly, the community gave us high praise for our programming and it only continues to
grow. More and more community groups are asking that the Y be part of what they do. These
are strong indictors of our mature programs delivering high quality, outcomes-based, child
development initiatives and the high regard for them in our community. We are proud to be a
Family YMCA!
We began the long road towards solving the issues we face with our Downie Street facility and how
we can further address the health and wellness needs of our community. Studies were conducted
to access our ability to be a “centre of community” and what that will look like. As we move through
this process, we will be investing in ways to better serve the community while stewarding this 146
year old institution that we are privileged to be part of.
A YMCA is its community and needs to be supported by that community. Partnerships and colocating options are important realities that we will be addressing. We need to do things together,
as we cannot do what is needed alone.

YMCA Mission
in Action
A blog created by one of the youth using our Youth Centre:
“Through the eyes of many adults, this generation is seen as
spoiled-rotten, selfish and inconsiderate. Not only that, but many
adults think that this generation is doomed to failure; that we’re
too “attached to our phones” or “pre-occupied with our image”
to function as a society when the adults in our life now are long
gone. Too often the wonderful and innovative things our youth
are doing are overlooked.
A prime example of today’s youth being misjudged are the
community youth centres. The same place that young people
go to feel safe and secure when there is nowhere else is a sitting
target for hate from adults who don’t understand what it is. They
don’t understand that while those teens are in that building,
they are not: stealing, vandalizing, or being violent. They’re in a
controlled environment where they: cook, play pool, play video
games, play air hockey, have adults able to counsel them, and
participate in healthy conversation. Conversation could range
from sex, to politics, to sexism, to school, to hair and makeup, to
religion, to prom, to video games, to cars, even better ways to
solve world crisis. Yet, before some adults know anything else
about it, they’ll see a teen smoking outside and assume we’re
criminals. They’ll brand the Youth Centre as a place that births
young criminal activity and dismiss it as harmful (if anything).
This is not the case. For every one child they see smoking outside,
there are three inside debating what universities to go to.”

YMCA
Peace Medal
The responsibility for peace begins
with each person, in relationships
with family and friends, and
extends to community life and
national activities. There are no
simple recipes. It is we ourselves
who must seek – act – pray for
ways to be “peacemakers”
Faye Herbert
Memorial Scholarship
Faye Herbert was a long time employee of the YMCA of
Stratford-Perth who dedicated much of her time to the
development of young people of this association and the
community. To honour her commitment and dedication, a
scholarship has been established in her name to recognize
YMCA staff and volunteers who have made a significant
contribution to this association through their work and
who are pursuing post-secondary or continuing education.
This year’s recipients are:

The YMCA is proud to recognize the
volunteer efforts of Sue Orr in improving the
lives of others.
Sue Orr is a community volunteer who
dedicates her skills to improving her local and
international communities. Among her favourite
peace activities is her work with Sleeping
Children Around the World, where she is now a
team leader having distributed over 29,000 bed
kits in Kenya, Bangladesh, India and Togo. She
is also working to provide clean water through
Stratford and Area World Aid. When Sue is not
overseas, she provides her time and talents
to local community agencies such as school
breakfast programs, the Council of Churches,
House of Blessing and Salvation Army, among
others.
When people ask Sue why she volunteers so
much, she responds “I have been blessed, so I
need to bless others”.
