We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Weeth Primary School. It might be the first time that you have had a child starting school or you may be a returning parent. We hope that you find the information in this newsletter helpful and it helps to answer any of the questions that you might have about school. General routines and reminders *You will be given a book bag, this needs to be brought to school every day and placed in the book bag box. * A PE bag needs to be in school and can be left for the half term on their peg. PE is on Wednesday afternoon this term. *All money that is brought to school MUST be in a named wallet or envelope with amount and purpose. *Please label all clothes with a permanent marker or sewn name label. *Show and tell is on Friday and the children can bring one item from home to talk about with their friends. *If you have any concerns or want to share information then please come and see Mrs Peacock who will arrange an appropriate time to see you. How can you help at home? *Reading - Please read or share a book for ten minutes with your child every day. During the Autumn term your child will get the opportunity to visit the school library and choose a book to bring home with them. You may also like to visit Camborne Library and borrow books from them. *Letters and Sounds- Your child will bring home a letters and sounds book in which the letters learned each week will be recorded. These must be practised daily. Please go through the sound books every day as this helps your child to remember them. If your child is tired, do feel free to leave it and try another time. Children will receive a reading Karate band for every twenty times they complete this homework and their name will be announced in assembly on Friday. *Maths – Please help your child learn their numbers to 20 by looking for numbers when you are out and about. Each child will bring home a set of number cards with some ideas on how to use them to help them learn their numbers. *Please encourage your child to play educational games on the computer. CBeebies has some excellent games and activities. *Tapestry – Don’t forget to log in and keep yourself updated with your child’s online learning journal. We also love to find out what the children have been doing at home so please add your own. Our Topic for this half term is SENSATIONAL ME and we will be exploring the theme in many different ways. PSED – We will be settling into classroom life and learning the rules and routines we need to follow when we are at school. We will be thinking about new beginnings and how things change now we have started school and how that might make us feel. We will be thinking about what makes us special and celebrating our differences and things that make us unique. Communication, Language and Literacy - We will be using our senses to explore and talk about the world around us. We will read Owl Babies which is a lovely picture book all about a family of owls. Physical Development – We will be developing control of our bodies through music and movement activities. We will be using our indoor as well as outdoor classroom to master new skills. We will be working hard to exercise and strengthen our hands to enable us to hold a pencil efficiently to write our names. This will involve play dough, cutting and sticking, bead threading, finger painting and much, much more. You can help with this at home by logging in to ‘Letter Join’ and practising forming letters and patterns using the computer or tablet. Maths - We will be learning the numerals 0 – 20 and sequencing them into the correct order. We will be practising the skill of counting reliably giving just one number name to each object counted. Understanding the world - We will be learning about our senses and how we use them. We will be finding out what happens when we are deprived of our senses. We will be making fruit salad by exploring taste, colour and texture. We will be exploring how optical illusions can fool our senses. Expressive arts and design - We will be learning about different artists and how their work appeals to our senses. How colour, pattern and shape can be used to appeal to our senses. We will be learning about sound and listen to different composers work. We will create our own music to represent a character or a place. Maths and English targets for this term Each term the children in the Foundation Class are set targets for Maths and English. They follow a whole school focus and are practised regularly in class. It is helpful if you can help your child with these at home. Maths I can count from 0 to 20 and back again. I can recognise what each number looks like and put them in order. How to help at home: Look for numbers when you are out and about and point them out to your child to see if they can tell you what they are. Play games that involve counting, Snakes and Ladders is an excellent example. Use the number cards in your maths pack to play some simple games. English I can say a good sentence. I can write my name. How can I help at home: When reading together ask your child talk about the story, what they did or didn’t like. Put interesting words into a sentence, adding a new word again and again so it gets longer and longer. e.g. The tiny, timid mouse was hiding in his hole. Encourage your child to write their name on everything they draw or paint at home.
