Newsletter
Welcome to our final newsletter of 2010. We have said farewell to many of our international
students as they head back to their northern hemisphere homes and reunions with families and
old friends. We have enjoyed the company of all our visitors, felt culturally enriched as a school
and formed what we are sure will be lasting friendships.
As we head into 2011 we remind ourselves the recent goodbyes will soon be replaced with new
hellos and the chance to once again show the delights of our New Zealand home to
our new arrivals.
Until then, we wish you all–students, families and agents – a wonderful festive holiday.
We hear many of you are enjoying snow…we’ll be thinking of you all as we head for the beach!
We look forward to more contact with you all in 2011.
If you have any queries or would like any more information about the opportunities we can
offer the young people you work with please don’t hesitate to contact our Dean of
International Students, [email protected]
Our academic stars
Our international students often set themselves very clear and challenging
learning goals. and studying away from home in a second language adds
to the challenge. So, to have so many of them recognised and celebrated
for their academic achievements at our recent end of term prize giving events was
fabulous.
Misaki and Momoka (right)have excelled
at school this year and have proved to be superb
all round students taking every opportunity and
enjoying whatever came their way, always with a
cheerful smile. This ranged from dance to woodwork to general class work. They have been every
teachers’ dream students! At prize giving Misaki
Hiroko, a proud mother!
and Momoka won a myriad of certificates with
Misaki winning the Best Academic Performance Cup for Year 9!
And the learning doesn’t stop here...having completed their NCEA Level 3
exams senior students such as Steffen and Antonia return to Germany to
attend university to study biology and medicine, Sunny will be returning in
the new year to start a computing degree in Auckland and Aya will return
to MBAS to study in Y12. We wish them all continued success and we are
proud to have been able to help them on their learning journeys.

End of term—time to slow down...not us!
Our international students may be getting ready to return home but they know how to make the most of
their last few weeks. A full and fun packed summer activities programme included a trip to New Chums
Beach—not a bad place for Tim to celebrate his birthday on reportedly the 2nd most beautiful beach in the
world, hiking up to the Pinnacles Lodge for an overnight stay and an overnight dive trip to Mercury Islands
where they collected scallops and crayfish for our final barbeque. Add to that boat trips, glass etching,
making chocolate, Kiwi cooking and the fun of the barbeque around the school pool and you can see they
have made the most of ther last few days here.

A reminder about our 2011 term dates and that the second half of our academic year
will be shorter than normal. The reason for this is the adjustments the Ministry of
Education have made to the New Zealand school year to accommodate the
organisation of the Rugby World Cup. The fee structure (available on our website
www.mbas.ac.nz) will remain the same but if you have any queries about how these
date changes might affect international students please contact our International
Student Dean, Lorraine Bristow, [email protected]
Coming soon...the 2011 school production of Bugsy Malone. It will be a chance for
performers and backstage support crew to work on this amazing musical. Performances
will be in June but the planning has already begun and for any new international
students joining us at the beginning of 2011 it will be great opportunity to sign up and
become part of the team!
