2015 This fall, Southern Pines Primary School participated in a “One Book, One School” project. The school provided all children with copies of the book Toys Go Out by Emily Jenkins, which they read in the classroom and at home with their families. For many of the children, this was their first experience reading a chapter book. They fell in love with the toy characters—two stuffed animals named Lumphy (a buffalo) and Stingray and Plastic (a red ball). To support the project, the Library created related interactive displays and purchased copies of other titles by Stingray signing books the author for check-out. As a culminating event, the Library hosted a party for the children and their parents. Staff members dressed up as the book characters and autographed copies of the books. The children played games such as Pin the Tail on the Buffalo. The Friends of the Library funded supplies for the costumes, prizes for the classrooms, and a special picnic snack. Two hundred fourteen parents and children attended! For some Pin-the-tail on the Buffalo families, this was their first time in the Library, and many signed up for cards. This Holiday Season, Give a Book. To encourage the community to give the gift of reading to children for the holidays, the Friends have decorated their tree in the Town’s Parade of Trees with the message “Read, Read, Read.” Visitors to the tree will find coupons which they may bring to the Library and redeem for a free children’s book to give as a gift this season. Having books in the home and sharing reading time together is essential for language development in young children, ensuring they enter kindergarten ready to learn and be successful in their school careers. The tree is located on Pennsylvania Ave. between the Coalition and the Douglass Center. The program identified 33 children in grades K-2 who were at-risk for falling behind their peers in reading skills. These children received scholarships to attend the Boys & Girls Club, who then brought them to the Library three mornings a week. At the Library, they worked with certified teachers on reading skills in small groups and individually. They learned to use the library and practiced other social skills. On the other two days, the children had the opportunity to participate in a book club led by Library staff at the Club and to go on field trips for other experiential learning. At the end of the summer, 88% of the children who had regularly attended the program were shown to have maintained or improved their reading skills. Due to the success of the program, the partners plan to continue it and to seek funding, leadership, and support from community groups to expand this model into Aberdeen and other areas of Moore County. The Southern Pines Public Library held a special 20th Anniversary Dedication Day celebration on September 10, the date when the Library moved into its current location at 170 W. Connecticut Avenue. Over 100 guests came to celebrate this “Happy Birthday” with games, cake, a timeline of Library history, and a picnic dinner provided by the Friends of the Library. The day culminated with a multi-generational presentation by Storyteller Sherri Lovett. The event launched the Library’s year-long programming theme , “One Community, Many Voices.” Value Line, one of the most trusted names in investment research, is now available as an online resource through the Southern Pines Public Library’s website. Please join us for stories, songs, and fun — and stay for playtime after the stories are over! This is a caregiver and child interactive storytime featuring rhymes, songs, and stories! It is exclusively for babies and young toddlers. To help caregivers keep on track with this goal, the Library provides information about early literacy and reading. Displays within the children’s spaces guide patrons to popular books; early literacy stations encourage interaction between children and adults; and toys such as puppets and tablets create opportunities for learning play. Storytimes are also available during the week. All of the activities provided in the Library use five easy practices of singing, talking, writing, reading, and playing to help prepare children for reading. The goal of this initiative is to implement a Community Solutions Action Plan ensuring that all children in Southern Pines are reading on grade level by the time they complete third grade. Southern Pines was one of the first three communities in North Carolina to join the nation-wide Campaign in 2012, and the only to be named an All-America City for its efforts. The project has grown, and there is now a state lead for the Campaign—North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation—which is expanding participation. Workgroups reported on 2014-15 projects that supported the five focus areas of the Plan: preventing summer learning loss; encouraging consistent school attendance; engaging parents and families; ensuring children enter kindergarten ready to learn; and promoting community investment. Growth was made in many of these focus areas. In summer learning, children made gains in retaining learning over the summer, and new storytime programs for parents and children were launched in low-income communities. In student attendance, the data showed that in 2014-15, 2nd grade students did not have any chronic absences. School readiness had exciting developments, too. Partners for Children and Families received new grants that funded Summer Learning Program participants additional intensive technical assistance for childcare centers and expanded the Reach out and Read program provided by pediatricians to parents. Finally, the parent and family awareness increased with the Give 5 Read 5 program through Moore County Schools, which promoted community donations of books given to students to read over the summer. After the reports, the group decided to build on the success of the Campaign in Southern Pines and expand to a county-wide effort. Partners for Children and Families (PfCF) agreed to assume the leadership for a Moore County Campaign, enabling the initiative to reach more children and families, develop a greater message presence, and grow more great readers.
