ST. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Warren, Ohio VOL.11-14 NOVEMBER 2014 SYNAXIS OF THE ARCHANGELS All the Angels, according to the Apostle Paul, are ministering spirits, - sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation - (Heb. 1:14). God set them as overseers of every nation and people, and guides to that which is profitable (Deut. 32:8); and while one Angel is appointed to oversee each nation as a whole, one is also appointed to protect each Christian individually. He commands them to guard them that hope on Him, that nothing should harm them, neither should any evil draw nigh to their dwelling (Ps. 90:10-12). In the Heavens they always behold the face of God, sending up to Him the thrice-holy hymn and interceding with Him in our behalf, seeing they rejoice over one sinner that repents (Esaias 6:2-3; Matt. 18:10; Luke 15:7). In a word, they have served God in so many ways for our benefit, that the pages of Holy Scripture are filled with the histories thereof. It is for these reasons that the Orthodox Catholic Church, wisely honouring these divine ministers, our protectors and guardians, celebrates today the present Synaxis that is, our coming together in assembly for their common feast to chant their praises, especially for the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who are mentioned in the Scriptures by name. The name Michael means "Who is like God?" and Gabriel means "God is mighty." The number of Angels is not defined in the divine Scriptures, where Daniel says that thousands of thousands ministered before Him, and ten thousands of ten thousands attended upon Him -(Dan. 7:10). But all of them are divided into nine orders which are called Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. ANDREW THE FIRST- CALLED APOSTLE This Saint was from Bethsaida of Galilee; he was the son of Jonas and the brother of Peter, the chief of the Apostles. He had first been a disciple of John the Baptist; afterwards, on hearing the Baptist's witness concerning Jesus, when he pointed Him out with his finger and said, "Behold the Lamb of God,Which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1.29,36), he straightway followed Christ, and became His first disciple; wherefore he is called the First-called of the Apostles. After the Ascension of the Saviour, he preached in various lands; and having suffered many things for His Name's sake, he died in Patras of Achaia, where he was crucified on a cross in the shape of an "X," the first letter of "Christ" in Greek; this cross is also the symbol of Saint Andrew. 2014 St. Demetrios Church Parish Information Proistamenos Fr. This gift comes to us in the form of time. The month of November for me has always held a secret joy. The golden days of October have ended, and yet in this month we begin our ascent toward the Nativity of our Savior (Christmas Day). As a nation, it is during this month that we designate one day specifically for the purpose of expressing our gratitude to God. Therefore it is in the midst of the joyful but quiet sadness of November, that we are afforded a period of time (especially during the Lenten Christmas season) to reflect upon that which is essential in our life; all the blessings in our life for which we are thankful. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that according to many of the Saints of the Church, the most important virtue one could possess as a Christian, is gratitude. And gratitude in this sense, is not only the ability to verbalize our thankfulness, for whatever. This Christian virtue of gratitude goes deeper. It is an approach to life. It is a way of being. It is the way we respond to the needs of other people as well as to the circumstances of life. Can you be grateful for everything that has happened in your life? It is a question that I find myself asking more and more. Grateful not only for the good things but for all my life’s experiences that have brought me to this day, including my own moments of personal failure and pain. Here however, I must remember and remind others as well, that it was through Crucifixion that the world was saved. Jesus was Risen from the dead with His wounds visible for all to see. So often we encounter people who wish to remain in their house of resentment and pain because they refuse or are unable to see beyond it. One of our tasks as an Orthodox Christian community is to help others gradually let go of resentment and to discover that right in the middle of the pain, there is a blessing for which we can be grateful. Seen from below, from a human perspective, there is an enormous gulf between good times and bad; between sorrow and joy. But from the perspective above, in the eyes of God, sorrow and joy are never separated. Where there is pain there is also healing. Where there is mourning there is also dancing. Where there is poverty, there is the Kingdom. Enjoy your families during this season of Thanksgiving. Live your lives with joy and gratitude. For we have good reason to be joyful and grateful: the joy of friendships; the joy of family; the joy of the Divine Liturgy; the joy of knowing that through the Church we live in the certainty of God’s Kingdom and Love. It Is Not Happiness That Makes Us Grateful, But Gratefulness That Makes Us Happy – Part 2 15 July 2014 The Lord in His mercy has taught me a hard lesson. You see, I’m the type of person who complains—a lot! My entire life I have tried to find that mystical and mythical pot at the end of the rainbow—I have been searching for the perfect job, the perfect house, the perfect school for my kids, I have been a restless soul always on the lookout for the next big thing. No matter how many blessings the Lord has bestowed me with I have had cause to grumble. Why can’t I be happily married? Why can’t I live in a big house in the suburbs? Why oh why oh why? Why can’t I have a well-paying respectable job? Why me? In my thirst to better myself I have trekked around three continents, changed addresses 35 times, dreamed of paking my belongings and moving to jungles in Costa Rica or island villages in India. I am absolutely nuts! I have never been happy with what and where I was. My daughter who has suffered through all my mad dashes to “get ahead” which have resulted in her changing elementary school four times before she got to middle school (changes that included a mid-transcontinental move to the Midwest and a transatlantic move to the Middle East) has summed up the matter for me very succinctly: “Mom, it doesn’t matter where you are or what you do, you will never be happy anywhere.” She is absolutely right. I am so restlessly unhappy I cannot find fulfillment anywhere. I keep circumambulating the globe thinking I can find that place I yearn for where people are connected , where they share sympathy and apple pies along a long picnic table. But this place doesn’t exist. I used to think in the rosy glow of youthful idealism that I found that place; it was called Barcelona and the Costa Brava. But then the man I had married at that time relapsed into drug addiction and I had to abandon a great job and a great apartment in a chi-chi section of that city to escape in the darkest midnight with a 5-month old baby swaddled in a hanging baby carrier under the threat of his killing me and denouncing me for kidnapping. I lost everything in a matter of a couple of weeks. Hell kind of blew up in the middle of what heaven I was concocting. Now that I am older, the glasses are off and the stark reality of hard won experience has set in. There is no heaven on earth. A woman can travel the whole world over looking for something but in the end has to return home to find what was missing. It Is Not Happiness That Makes Us Grateful, But Gratefulness That Makes Us Happy – Part 2 –page 2 That “home” is the true heaven, the one we can only find through a close intimate connection to God. Christ has taught my soul a deep lesson—that one thing I was looking for was Him. No one can find peace without the only peace possible and necessary. It is the peace that lies within. Every attempt by human beings, however ideal and well-meaning, to create a communal utopia, a heaven on earth, has ended in delusion, disappointment, and worse, tyranny. The closest I have seen to utopia is a monastery. And that is because the focus of such a community is God. “Our souls will not rest until they rest in Thee” St. Augustine remarked. Our soul will not find fulfillment till it has established a home for the Holy Spirit within it. Now that my life has become really brutal—now that I have come to grips with really a bitch of a boss, with real economic uncertainty, and real deprivation—I look back at my grumblings and want to kick myself in the butt. How stupid! How foolish I was to confuse blessings for troubles. How ungrateful! What an overbearing grumbling tiresome woman I must have sounded to the Lord. No wonder He’s put me through “hell” to make me see how in all things I must glorify God. Now when people ask me, “How are you? How’s your job? How’s your kids?” I stop myself from complaining and say, “Doxa to Theo,” “Glory to God, I am good.” For now I have learned that it is not what troubles and persecutions you are put through that determine whether you have it “good” or whether you can have peace or not, but rather the spirit of holiness, of patience, and gratitude that makes you happy.” The kingdom of heaven, the Lord has said, resides in you. And in order to acquire heaven, peace, or “home,” I have had to learn to stand still. I cannot move anymore. I have neither the money nor the time and three children act as pretty good anchors. I have been taught the hard way to seek the Lord quietly, methodically, patiently—like a bird watcher or one who wakes early to see the sunset creep and then explode in majesty before them. Through my daily prayers, through the cycles of the seasons and feast days of the church, through my obedience to the counsels of my spiritual father (he warned me about moving to faraway places), I am learning to make heaven out of this plot of hell I am standing on at the moment. And there is no heaven without listening to the voice of God, that whispers in the secret chambers of silence that curl into sinuous swirls of eternity like some Caribbean conch. Only by learning to bless even the darkness of my pathetic, sin-filled life, only by learning to bless what I once cursed, can I find the heaven that exists in the everyday hell I live through. “Be ardent in your labor and you will find God in your cooking pots,” Theresa of Avila said. And I know the closer I come to the Lord, the more the spirit of peace I will acquire and the joy, that ineffable joy that I lost through the dark journey through Mordor and the valley of the shadow of death, that joy will return again. And I will with a joyous heart filled with peace cry out to the Lord for the whole gift that has been my life—“Doxa si Kyrie”—“Glory and thanks be to You oh Lord. I am truly thankful.” Source: http://iarchos.wordpress.com/ SUFFERING CHRISTIANS Asia Bibi's Death Sentence Upheld by Lahore High Court Asia Bibi‘s death sentence was upheld by the Lahore High Court in Pakistan on Thursday. Bibi, a Roman Catholic mother of five also known as Aasiya Noreen, was sentenced to die in 2010 after she was convicted of blasphemy. Bibi‘s Muslim coworkers accused her of drinking the same water as them and verbally challenging their faith. ―I met Asia in prison a month ago. She‘s fine and was hoping to hear good news, but, alas, our ordeal is not over yet,‖ Bibi‘s husband, Ashiq Masih, told Morning Star News after yesterday‘s decision. World Watch Monitor reports that Bibi‘s attorney Naeem Shakir challenged the testimony of the women who feuded with Bibi, arguing to the appellate court that their testimony had been hearsay because the complainant in the case had not heards Bibi‘s words himself. The judges ignored Sharkir‘s critiques, suggesting he should have raised them the trial level. S. K. Chaudhry, the attorney who represented Bibi at her trial, explained that he had not crossexamined the only two eyewitnesses to the alleged blasphemous words. He told the judges it would violate his Muslim faith to repeat the words. ―In the process of administration of justice we need to be ‗secular,‘" one judge responded. ―Pakistan being a Muslim majority nation, where Christians and those of other religions are a tiny miniscule minorities, it is all the more incumbent on them (the government) to be vary (sic) of such accusations of blasphemy,‖ wrote Thomas Dabre, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Pune, an Indian diocese. ―The Pakistan government there should be very careful in applying such laws and the International community should hold the government of Pakistan accountable. The Pakistan government cannot disown responsibility of this death sentence and should overturn immediately the death sentence of innocent Christian woman Asia Bibi.‖ A staff editorial for Pakistan‘s The Nation also criticized the law, but stopped short of calling on the government to repeal it: The flaws in the blasphemy law, the repercussions they have against anyone who has been accused of blasphemy and the amount of cases that have little or no evidence proving that blasphemy was committed, mean that a revision of the laws is due. The law is based on the principal (sic) of innocent until proven guilty, yet in the case of blasphemy charges, the guilt of those that have been charged is accepted as fact, long before the case even goes to court, with the public often stepping in to execute their own brand of vigilante justice. ―This vile attack on a Christian wife and mother cannot stand. Like the case of [Sudanese woman Meriam Ibrahim], who is now a free woman because the world spoke out with one voice, it‘s time for the international community to condemn Pakistan‘s barbaric violation of Asia Bibi‘s human rights,‖ wrote Jordan Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice. ―She‘s done nothing wrong, and these trumped up charges are merely because she is a Christian.‖ SUFFERING CHRISTIANS-p2 David Griffiths of Amnesty International also condemned the attacks against Bibi, the first Pakistani woman to be sentenced to death for blasphemy. ―Her mental and physical health has reportedly deteriorated badly during the years she has spent in almost total isolation on death row,‖ Griffiths added. Morning Star News notes: ―Death sentences have rarely been carried out in blasphemy cases, but that is in part because such allegations have frequently led to deadly vigilante attacks on the accused or their lawyers.‖ Bibi‘s lawyer Naeem Shakir told MSN that they plan to appeal the decision to Pakistan‘s Supreme Court, though because of backlogs, the case will not likely be seen before 2017. After receiving her death sentence, Bibi‘s case attracted international attention, including that of Pope Benedict, who personally called for her freedom. In her own country, two Pakistani politicians were assassinated in 2011 after speaking out against anti-blasphemy laws. In 2013, French journalist Anne Isabelle Tollet and author of Blasphemy: A Memoir: Sentenced to Death over a Cup of Water told CT that she had little hope that Pakistan would repeal its blasphemy law. ―With the new group (Sharif's administration) it is impossible. I don't have any hope,‖ she said. ―The blasphemy law fits the definition of terrorism. It's a terror law. It's a way to instill terror. Everybody is scared of this law.‖ Earlier this year, Open Doors moved Pakistan up to number eight (from 14), on a list ranking the worst countries in the world for Christians. In 2013, more than 80 Christians lost their lives after bombs went off following a church service at All Saints Church in Peshawar. Previous high-profile attacks against Christians came that same year at Lahore's Joseph Colony and Gojra in 2009. ASK THE FATHER Question: Why does the Orthodox church use leavened bread and most Protestant fellowships use unleavened bread? I am a member of the Church of Christ (Restoration Movement) and we use unleavened bread because we assume that is the type of bread used at the Last Supper. When was unleavened bread brought introduced to the church? Answer: Actually, leavened bread has always been used in the Eastern Church. In fact, at one point in time, a great controversy raged over the fact that in the Eastern Church leavened bread was used, while in the Christian West unleavened bread was the norm. In the Christian East there is no concern for using the exact type of bread used at the Last Supper— known in the Orthodox Church as the ―Mystical Supper.‖ Christ ―leavens‖ our lives, so to speak, and the purpose of the Eucharistic celebration is not to “recreate” or “reproduce” a past event but, rather, to participate in an event that is beyond time and space and which, in fact, continues to happen each time the Eucharist is celebrated in fulfillment of Our Lord’s command. BIBLE STUDY Catechism classes are not scheduled yet, look in the weekly bulletin for further announcements. Orthodox Prayer of Thanksgiving O Lord my Savior and my Master, I, Thine unprofitable servant, with fear and trembling give thanks unto Thy loving goodness for all Thy benefits which Thou hast poured so abundantly upon me, Thy servant. I fall down in adoration before Thee and offer Thee, O God, my praises; with fervor I cry to Thee: O God, deliver me from all adversities and mercifully fulfill in me such of my desires as may be expedient for me. Hear me, I entreat Thee, and have mercy, for Thou art the Hope of all the ends of the earth, and unto Thee, with the Father, and the Holy Spirit, be ascribed glory, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. I praise Thee, O God of our Fathers, I hymn Thee, I bless Thee, I give thanks unto thee for Thy great and tender mercy. To Thee I flee, O merciful and mighty God. Shine into my heart with the True Sun of Thy righteousness. Enlighten my mind and keep all my senses, that henceforth I may walk uprightly and keep Thy commandments, and may finally attain unto eternal life, even to Thee, Who art the source of life, and be admitted to the glorious fruition of Thine inaccessible Light; for Thou art my God, and unto Thee, O Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be ascribed glory, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. PRIEST VISITATIONS Please inform the church office of any loved ones who are hospitalized or “shut ins”, so that they may be visited and receive the grace and comfort of the sacraments. Hospital Visitations Even though hospitals may ask your religious affiliation, THE HOSPITALS DO NOT CALL THE CHURCH OR THE PRIEST to inform who is a patient. If you or a loved one is a patient at a hospital and would like Fr. Costa (or a Cleveland area priest if you are in The Cleveland Clinic or University Hospital) to give the Sacrament of Holy Unction for healing or Holy Communion, you must call the church office. Confidentiality laws, “HIPAA,” make it impossible for us to get that information. THERE IS SOME CONCERN AS TO HOW CARS ARE BEING PARKED IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT ON SUNDAYS. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE AND ONLY PARK WHERE THERE ARE MARKED PARKING SPACES. THE LOT IS CONFIGURED FOR THE APPROPRIATE NUMBER OF SPACES FOR THE SIZE OF THE LOT. PARKING WHERE THERE ARE NO LINES CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE. DUE TO WINTER WEATHER, THE PARKING LOT IS EVEN MORE HAZARDOUS. PARISHIONERS WILL BE ASKED TO MOVE THEIR CARS, IF THEY ARE NOT PARKED APPROPRIATLEY. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE MOCHA HOUSE LOT, AS THERE ARE PLENTY OF SPACES IN THE CHURCH LOTS TO ACCOMMODATE PARISHIONERS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION. Fr. Costa‘s Cell Phone Fr.
