Season Concludes
THE FIRST SERVE
The Georgia State volleyball team returns home for the first time since mid-October
to conclude the regular season with a pair of match-ups on Senior Weekend. The Panthers
will honor lone senior Jocelyn Waldern in her final two matches in a Panther uniform.
State takes on VCU on Friday night at 5:30 p.m., followed by the final match of the 2009
season on Sunday at noon against William & Mary.
The Panthers enter the weekend 16-12 overall and 3-9 in the CAA. VCU, who
defeated the Panthers 3-1 earlier this year, enter Friday night’s contest at 22-8 and 10-2 in
the CAA, tied with Delaware for first place. VCU needs to win both matches this weekend
to clinch first place and have the honor of hosting the CAA Championship in Richmond
next weekend.
William & Mary also earned a 3-1 win over the Panthers back in October. The Tribe
are 16-10 and 8-4 in the CAA, needing one more win to clinch a spot in the CAA Championship. The Tribe will make a stop in Wilimington to face the Seahawks on Friday night,
before traveling to Atlanta.
Waldern, who has played in 109 matches in her career, enters the weekend with 465
kills, 438 digs, 103 service aces and 49 assists to her career. A team leader on and off the
court, Waldern has been recognized in the classroom for her studies as well, earning the
CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award the past three years, while also earning Faculty
Scholar honors during her freshman season for a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was also named
to the McAlister’s Deli/Seahawk Invitational All-Tournament team during her freshman
year.
The statistic to watch this weekend will be digs. Redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell is
just 29 digs shy of Kumi Ishiyama’s 2002-mark for the most digs in school history with
513. The Rockwall, Texas native has already moved into the top five in career digs this
season and overtaken Christen Garcia for the most digs per set average in school history.
Sunday’s match will conclude the regular season as the Panthers will start to look
ahead to the spring practice season. One win this weekend would give the Panthers the
most successful season during head coach Mike Webster’s six-year tenure as head coach.

After a year in which injuries and a tough non-conference schedule led to the
Panthers earning just three wins, Georgia State has returned to its old form this
season. The Panthers won the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge, as well as the Elon Invitational. State also took second at the Hilton RTP/NCCU Invitational. Georgia State
is just four wins shy of the biggest turnaround in school history and is already tied for
the second best turnaround with seven matches to play.

TRIPLE LINDY...TIMES SIX
Junior Ashley Jones continues to be a threat on the court in a variety of different
ways. Jones has scored six triple-doubles this season to stand second in the CAA and
among the top five in the nation. Jones scored her latest triple-double against James
Madison on October 30th, garnering 11 kills, 23 assists and 12 digs. She has also
scored 16 double-doubles this season.
Before missing a triple-double by one dig just over a month ago against Delaware,
Jones scored three straight triple-doubles, including one in a come-from-behind
win over Towson on October 16th. The junior has also missed five additional tripledoubles by just one dig this season, including last Saturday against Northeastern.
Jones scored her first triple-double of the season in the championship match of
the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge, scoring a career-high 24 kills, 22 assists and 11 digs
to earn tournament MVP honors.
She now has 12 triple-doubles for her career.
Jones is averaging just over a double-double per contest on the season with 12.5
kills per match to go along with 11.7 assists per contest. The junior is also adding 8.4
digs per match.
During her sophomore year, Jones scored six triple-doubles and tied for the
NCAA regular season lead. When the season was over, the San Diego native had
averaged just under a triple-double per match.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
With just one weekend to go in the season, Georgia State ranks among the top of
the CAA in several statistical categories. The Panthers lead the league in service aces,

After a stellar 2008 season, redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell has figured out a way to
top it in 2009. Cantrell earned Elon Invitational Tournament MVP honors after scoring
52 digs and leading the Panthers to the tournament title earlier this season.
For her career, Cantrell has already moved ahead of Jennifer Rizzo, Molly Sapp, Lee
Barnhill, Beth Van Fleet and April DeCoste into the top five in digs all-time in Panther
history. On October 18th, she became just the seventh Panther with 1000 career digs
and is now just 34 behind Ana Paula Ferreira (2003-07) for fourth on the all-time list.
She currently stands third in the CAA with 4.61 digs per set, with a total of 484 already
this season, which is already the third best single season total in school history with two
matches to play. The all-time single season record is 513 set by Kumi Ishiyama in 2002.
She needs 29 digs, a 14.50 dig per match average, to tie Ishiyama.
Last season, Cantrell registered double-digit dig performances in 23 of the Panthers
28 matches, scoring a pair of career-high 30 dig matches against Mercer (9/30) and Hofstra
(10/19). This year, Cantrell has scored double-digit digs in 25 of 28 matches with a season
high of 28 against Delaware.
Cantrell also has also moved ahead of Christen Garcia (2003-06) on the all-time list
with 3.69 digs per set, the highest all-time mark in Georgia State history. She has also set
the single game digs per set record with 4.61.
