Rubric – Appeasement at Munich HAT
To answer Question 1 correctly, students must explain how the Munich Agreement is
connected to the Treaty of Versailles. Possible answers include:
a. Students explain that the Treaty of Versailles created Czechoslovakia, which Nazi
Germany threatened to attack if it did not cede the Sudetenland. In the Munich
Agreement, Neville Chamberlain and Édouard Daladier agreed to not intervene
in the annexation of the Sudetenland in return for Adolf Hitler’s guarantee that
this would be Nazi Germany’s last act of expansion.
b. Students explain that the sanctions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of
Versailles contributed to German anger and hardships, which created the climate
for Nazism to boom, leading to German expansion. The Munich Agreement was a
response to German expansion.
c. Students explain that the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles against
Germany, including the transfer of German territories, led many British and
French citizens to be indifferent towards German expansion. Strong students
may reason that this indifference supported the policy of appeasement, of which
the Munich Agreement was a part.
