How to Write an Opinion Editorial What is an Opinion Editorial? Opinion editorials (op-ed) are articles that appear opposite the editorial page of practically all newspapers. They are written by local citizens, experts and leaders of organizations on topics that are relevant to the newspapers' audience. Depending on the paper, the topics can range from a hotly debated national issue to a problem only important to the readers of a town’s newspaper. Purpose of an Op-Ed They are an extremely powerful and cost-effective way to highlight issues and influence policymakers to take action on social or societal problems. They also contribute to educating media about issues. The following tips will help in writing an op-ed. 1. Know the classic form The material you send should be neat. Typically you should include the following: A covering letter on letterhead (if submitted on behalf of an organization). The article with a suggested title, signed with your name, title, affiliation and degrees. A brief sentence describing the author's expertise. All relevant contact information (address, phone, fax, e-mail etc). Note: Op-eds are typically around 750 words in length. 2. Know what your local newspaper's preferences are It is recommended you check the op-ed page of the paper to see if writing guidelines are included. This information may also be available via the newspaper’s website. If you can't find this information, you can phone the paper to see if they can provide you a copy. This information will help you determine what style, tone and writing techniques will increase the likelihood of your letter being published. Reading several other submissions will further help you hone your approach. 3. Further increasing your odds of acceptance Media respond more positively to a local community member than to someone from outside the community. If you are making a submission to your local paper, be sure you clearly indicate that you are a member of the community. 4. What to do if your submission is not accepted If your submission isn’t published consider shortening the article and submitting it as a letter to the editor. While op-eds average 750 words in length, a letter to the editor is typically 300 words or less. Program Training and Consultation Centre, The Media Network | How to Write an Opinion Editorial 1
