Confirmation Mass – Wednesday 4th February at 5.00pm On Wednesday 4th February, we
welcome Father Robert Byrne, Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham to school. This is the first time in
four years that we have received a visit from a Bishop, so it is a very special occasion, particularly
for the pupils who will be confirmed by the Bishop that afternoon. Attendance at Mass is
optional for pupils in Years 3 and 4 but we very much hope that all pupils in Years 5 to 8 will
attend the Mass. The Chamber Choir will be singing at the Mass. Pupils in Years 5 to 8 will have
no prep that day and after match tea or collation will have some time for recreation before Mass
begins at 5:00pm. They should be ready to leave soon after 6:00pm. Parents are very welcome to
attend this special celebration and we look forward to seeing many of you there.
Carol Service Collection The retiring collection at last term’s Carol Service amounted to £521.15
and will go to Shelter. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
Music News The recent Music Newsletter can be downloaded from the school’s website in News
and Information. A new website dedicated to music at Winterfold is now available at

Music Competition Assessment for the Music Competition will take place in the week starting
Monday 2nd February. Please ensure your child has one piece prepared on each instrument for the
annual music assessment.
CBSO Trip On Tuesday 20th January, all pupils in the Orchestra and Year 5 are going on a trip
to the Symphony Hall to listen to the CBSO. They are performing a selection of classical favourites
which will support all of the work we have done with the children in Year 5 on ‘The Orchestra’.
Children should wear blazers and normal uniform. There is a listening link on the Music website via
Spotify, with which your child can listen to all the pieces that will be played. Please do have a
listen!
Year 3 and 4 Trip to the BFG - Thursday 22nd January As part of Year 3 and 4's Drama
studies this term, the children will be visiting the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to see a morning
performance of ‘The BFG’. The coach will leave Winterfold at 9.00am prompt and return for a
5.00pm collection. The children will need to be dressed in their Blazers and Bests but will NOT
need any spending money. We will spend the afternoon visiting the new Birmingham library.
Year 5 Drama Monologues All of the Year 5 children are busy writing and learning their Drama
Monologues. In order to add to the performance, could you please provide a basic costume for your
child. 5A performances will take place at 4.00pm in Penryn Hall on Tuesday 3rd February.
5J performances will take place at 4.00pm in Penryn Hall on Thursday 6th February. Please
contact Mrs Miles if you have any questions.
Reading at Home Please could you ensure that your child reads at
home every evening or in the car on the way to school! This is a
particular request for children in Years 4 and 5. All pupils have books
and Reading Records to keep a track of their home and school reading.
Thank you for your support.
Congratulations to Mrs Thurlow on the birth of her first grandchild,
Tyler John!
SPORTS REPORTS
U13 Ingle Shield Football Tournament On Wednesday, Winterfold hosted the Ingle Shield
Football Tournament. This is our annual 6-a-side football competition for local prep schools and
always generates enthusiasm and excitement. This year was no exception with matches played in a
very friendly and competitive manner. The spirit between all of the boys and coaches was
excellent. Our team consisted of Ben Hollingworth, Tom Martin, Freddie Harvey-Gilson, Frank
Coughlan, Ben Russell, James Massey, Tom Bullock and Joe Miszkowski. The boys played some
very good football and certainly our passing and movement in mid-field was as good as any
team. This resulted in a good number of chances, but unfortunately we didn’t convert enough of
these opportunities. Our best performance was against the Elms, a fixture we lost 1-0, despite
dominating all aspects of the game and we were even congratulated by the opposition coach for our
team work. Overall, we achieved one win and one draw. However, this wasn’t a fair reflection on
our boys’ performance and there were two other games that we could easily have won. Having said
that, Moor Park and Malvern Downs were the two strongest sides on the day and ultimately a 1-0
victory to Moor Park in the match between them ensured that Moor Park were the winners. Our
boys, as ever, were a credit to the school and showed the usual determination, spirit and sportsmanlike behaviour that makes us proud. Well done.
U13B Netball v Bromsgrove We lost the toss and Bromsgrove had first centre pass. They were a
good team but we defended well, with Taylor Williams and Katie Beckett working hard to stop
their attempts at scoring. However, Bromsgrove dominated the game and scored five goals in quick
succession. Charlotte Karvaski and Emily Clark both scored for Winterfold to get us back into the
match. There was some great play from Missy Hingley and Ella Norie and Grace Williams and
Emily Bills defended well. Winterfold scored again but we could not catch up and Bromsgrove
went on to win the match convincingly. Well tried girls.

U11A Football Tournament at King’s Hawford We competed very well on Wednesday, often
led by sheer determination. Our first game was against The Downs. After taking the lead, we then
conceded two goals, the last one seconds before the final whistle. Both RGS and King’s Hawford
were strong sides and so narrow defeats there meant we went into the plate competition. In the
semi-final, we beat The Elms to set up a final against Abberley. This was a great game and, after
extra time, it was still 0-0, so we shared the plate trophy. The most pleasing aspect of the afternoon
was that although we were often under pressure in terms of territory and possession, we fought all
the way through and showed great character. Well played!
U11B Football v RGS The Grange The boys improved as the game went on and the second half
was a competitive match. Ben Taylor was enthusiastic in goal and was helped out by man of the
match, Charlie Withers, in defence. Owen Price made some good passes whilst George McEwan
was energetic on the right midfield. Will Evans, Jack Maydew and Louis Thompson also did their
best and we will now work on our ball control and passing skills. Good effort boys.
U11A Netball v RGS The Grange We had first centre pass but The Grange took the ball and
passed it up the court to score. This was how the game continued. We tried hard but they were a
very strong team. We managed to score 3 goals but unfortunately this wasn’t enough and The
Grange won 11-3. Well tried girls.
Report by Emily Langford and Mia King
U11B Netball v RGS The Grange We had first centre pass and got off to a good start with some
great play from Kristin Camargo, Evie Richards, Izzy Bolton and Kitty Merritt. We scored a goal
but The Grange also scored and by half time it was 2-1 to them. In the second half, there was some
good defending from Emily Vines, Millie Hooper and Isabella Myatt. Mia King made some
excellent shots at goal and we scored another 3 goals but The Grange scored 2 goals so it was a 4-4
draw in the end. Well played girls.

U10A Football v RGS The Grange Winterfold played host to The Grange on a very cold and
blustery afternoon on Wednesday. After the previous evening’s snow, the pitches were very wet and
playing was not an easy task. The Grange took control early in the game and looked a lot quicker
and decisive than the Winterfold boys. They scored midway through the first half and dominated
thereafter. As the second half began, an early goal from The Grange took the lead to 2-0 and from
here on a further three goals were scored. A notable performance from Jacob Stirk was a highlight
of the game, with a solid and determined performance in defence. It was a difficult first game of the
season against a strong team but it is onwards and upwards boys!
U10B Football v RGS The Grange The boys took time to get into their stride and were 5-0 down
at half time. However, they improved after the break and the second half was much more evenly
matched. The final score was 7-2 to The Grange.
U10A Netball v RGS The Grange We started off well. Poppy Sawyer, Pippa Fleming and Sophie
Spittle played well in defence and at the end of the first quarter it was 3-1 to us. In the second
quarter, The Grange were a lot stronger and at half time it was 5-4 to them. After the break, there
was some good play from Nissa Niroumand, Patricia Sfrantzis, Amy Ranasinghe, Kayla Newton
and Emily Williams. We scored another 3 goals but The Grange scored 2 so it was 7-7 in the end.
Well played girls.
Report by Emily Williams and Pippa Fleming
U10B Netball v RGS The Grange RGS were a strong team but we tried hard. Niamh King, Alice
Price and Poppy Pinfield all played well in the first half but we did not score and it was 1-0 at half
time. In the second half, Eleanor Dunn, Annabel James, Amelia Bayliss, Charlotte James, Alysia
White and Amellie Clare played some good netball but in the end it was 5-1 to The Grange. Well
tried girls.
Report by Amellie Clare
U9A Football v Malvern Downs The first football game of the season proved to be a competitive
game and also gave us a few pointers for improvement. Charlie Felton had a solid game as
goalkeeper, whilst Edward Bowers and Harry Cooke worked well in defence. Alex Evans scored a
hat trick and Finlay Harvey-Gilson also scored a goal after a good pass from Will Wilson. Will
Millard and Sam Mason also made good contributions but Malvern played well to win by 6-4.
U8A Football v Malvern Downs The first game as a team for Winterfold was a very successful
one as we dominated the game throughout. Our shape was very good for most of the game and our
composure on the ball excellent. We scored goals regularly throughout and only conceded two to
give us a comfortable victory. This will give the boys great confidence for the tougher challenges to
come. Well done!

Year 2 This week, we have continued our study of Florence Nightingale. The children followed
her journey to Scutari in Turkey and described the route in detail. In Literacy, they have undertaken
further research on Florence and created their own information texts.
Year 1 We have started our new History topic this week and have been thinking about Toys of
Long Ago. We have begun by looking at new toys and the children all brought in their favourite
toy from home and described it. Next week, we are going to Hartlebury Museum to look at some
very old toys and how they compare!
Reception This week, the children have been looking at the world on a globe. They have
identified the seven continents and leaned how to differentiate between land and sea. We have also
been to Forest School and the children had a lovely time learning new skills.
Kindergarten 2 We have continued with our topic on Space and have been busy changing our role
play area into a space ship and cutting out astronauts. In PE we practised moving like spacemen
and have learned some new songs and rhymes about space. We even made our own rock cakes!
Kindergarten 1 We have been thinking about dinosaurs and how they would have moved around.
We pretended to be dinosaurs and set our movements to music. We have also made paper plate
dinosaurs and used small world dinosaurs to design ‘stomp paintings’!
Woodhouse All the children have settled back to nursery really well after the Christmas break. The
babies have enjoyed singing gentle songs and playing with soft toys, whist the Tweenies have been
working on their Winter theme, making polar bears and penguins! The Toddlers, meanwhile, have
started their Colour theme and have made a lovely, big hand-print rainbow!
