THE GREAT ARTISTS, The Dutch Masters - A DVD documentary.
The Dutch Golden Age of Art is that period generally spanning the 17th century, during and
after the later part of the Eighty Tears War for Dutch independence. The Dutch artists were
considered more distinct from the European art of the time, in that works of Dutch art
reflected such detailed realism. Bosch & Bruegel: Little is known about Hieronymus
Bosch’s life or his thoughts about art. He was however known as a popular painter of the time. He received commissions from home and abroad and was part of an arch conservative
religious group. Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Flemish Renaissance painter know for his
landscapes and peasant scenes. He was known to dress as a peasant and mingle at weddings
and celebrations gaining inspiration and details for his genre paintings.
Rubens & Van Dyck: Peter Paul Rubens was a Baroque painter with the extravagant style
that emphasized movement, color and sensuality. In addition to his fame among the nobility
and art collectors, he was known as a scholar, art collector and a diplomat.
Sir Anthony van Dyck was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in
England and famous for his portrait of Charles I of England and his family.
