Where it’s celebrated: Shetland Islands, Scotland Public Sleeping Day What it’s about: A series of fire festivals to mark the end of the Christmas season. “Up Helly Aa” literally means “end holy day all.” How it started: It grew out of an older tradition known as tar barreling which involved groups of young men who would drag barrels of burning tar through town on sledges and make mischief. The first fire festival was celebrated in 1876.
