Hanover County Public Schools Adult Education 2014 Fall Programs Adult Education Classes • GED® Preparation • Official GED® Practice Testing English for Speakers of Other Languages • English Literacy/Civics education Adult Basic Education / Fast Track to GED® Adult Basic Education Adult Basic Education classes are designed to help adults improve their skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. • Classes are also designed to assist adults with basic computer literacy skills needed to pass the GED®. • Classes are for adults 18 and over and no longer enrolled in public education. • Career counseling services are also provided to students. First semester courses are scheduled for September 8, 2014 - January 22, 2015 Second semester courses are scheduled for January 26, 2015 - May 28, 2015 Cost - $60 (includes textbooks) Tuition must be paid prior to beginning class. Before beginning classes, students must: • Register on designated registration dates (students must provide a government issued photo ID) • Take a placement test (TABE) which determines the appropriate class level. • Attend orientation. NOTE - Classes have a minimum number of participants that must be met two weeks prior to the start of the class. Classes may have to be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Don’t delay. Register early. Registration begins August 11, 2014. Fast Track to GED® Classes provide targeted instruction to students preparing to take the Official GED® test. Small group and individualized instruction is provided in the following content areas: • Reasoning through Language Arts • Mathematical Reasoning • Science • Social Studies Classes also include: • Test taking strategies • Digital literacy and preparing for computer-based testing • Practicing Evaluation-based writing • Official GED® Practice testing NOTE - Students must take the TABE and Official GED® Practice test and earn a minimum score to qualify for this option. Classes meet twice weekly for three hours each session. • Students are expected to bring to class a three-ring binder, paper or notebook, and pens or pencils. • Career counseling services are also provided to students. Enrollment information When the registration form has been completed and tuition has been received, an individual is immediately enrolled and should be in attendance the first class session. Enrollment is accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis until the maximum number of persons is accommodated. Registrants will not be notified unless the requested course has been filled or cancelled. Courses are open to adults 18 years of age or older who are no longer enrolled in a secondary school program. Refunds Refunds are automatic when courses are filled or cancelled, otherwise there are no refunds. Class Cancellations/School Closings Class sessions may be extended due to weather cancellations or other unforeseen circumstances. Classes will not meet when schools are closed for holidays or other emergencies. If schools close early, announcements will be made on TV99 for Comcast customers and through other local TV/radio stations.
