Gwen Egg is running a workshop called Fun With Flax, to pass on the enjoyment of weaving with plants. Weave a fish, frog, snake or lizard and other wonderful critters. Learn ingenious weaving techniques and make a basket. Using leaves from the New Zealand flax plant, participants can make toys and containers that don’t come from a shop. All materials and equipment are supplied. The workshop, for children aged 8-12, runs from 10am-1pm on April 21. Tickets are $15, available from www.clarenceartsandevents.net Skilled street artist Rory Dick will run a workshop for nine- to 12-year-olds to learn the art of cutting detailed stencils and then applying their own stencils to a complimentary T-shirt. Participants are asked to bring two images, either on their phones or printed out on A4 paper, that they would like to use as a basis for their stencil. Children should also bring a packed lunch. Then look no further, because the Theatre Royal has got you covered with entertainment for children and their parents. The wonderfully entertaining story of Mr Stink comes to life in a touching, twisted, hilarious — and very smelly — tale. Hold on to your nose as you follow the loneliest girl in the world as she makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp. Based on the book by British actor and author David Walliams, this is fun for children aged 6-12. Follow your nose to the Theatre Royal on April 18 and April 19. And for kids who like making things, using up all materials and getting into mischief, you mustn’t miss Loose Ends. Come to a place where gadgets are made, machines tamed and circus tricks pop up when you least expect them. This is the story of a man who thinks he can organise his life in boxes, and has a knack for getting into trouble. Meet the Easter Bunny and receive an Easter treat. The Easter Bunny will be visiting Eastlands between 11am and 2pm on Tuesday (April 11) to Saturday (April 15). Children can meet the Easter Bunny and receive an early Easter treat. Children can enter our Easter colouring competition and go in the draw to win one of three Easter hampers valued at $50 each. The intensive school holiday learn-to-swim program will run for three days of each week. Students can enrol for three or six days. Week one classes start on April 19, with week two starting April 26. The holiday program gives children lifelong skills while having lots of fun. The fully qualified teachers use games and fun activities to develop a love for swimming. Classes lasting 30 minutes are offered in the mornings, and hour-long classes are offered for advanced students in the afternoons. This year’s program, which runs from April 18-28, includes the annual touring children’s film festival Little Big Shots, circus and art workshops, and the opportunity to join the Story Island team in learning about the history of the Brooker Highway. Little Big Shots will screen films for youngsters every Thursday of the holidays. The films will include the best in local and international children’s shorts, animations, documentaries and, impressively, child-produced films. Films for children aged two and over will screen at 10am, and films for children seven and over will screen at noon. Each session costs $8. For film-goers feeling a little bit inspired, kids can have a crack at producing and starring in an original short film that will be broadcast on YouTube in Script to Screen — Guerilla Filmmaking! This year the festival will explore all things “animal’’, with a range of special events, displays, programs and activities for and by children running over five days from April 26-30. Visitors will be able to learn how to draw cartoon animals and make animal puppets in special workshops, party at an animal-themed Kids’ Disco, meet people who work with animals every day, and much more. The best part is that all festival activities and events are free. A highlight is sure to be the Festival Artists in Residence, the Trash Puppets — artists Jhess Knight and Katie Boon, who will encourage children to be creative using recycled and reusable materials. Visitors will be able to drop in to the Puppet Studio to create their own trash puppets, write or draw their puppet’s story to become part of a storybook, track a Tasmanian devil puppet through TMAG’s galleries, and watch a puppet performance created by workshop participants. The performance will be the culmination of a special puppet-making, story-writing and performance workshop, featuring puppeteers aged 8-12 performing with their MAKE IT: Artists Jhess Knight and Katie Boon will encourage children to be creative using recycled and reusable materials. These free workshops have limited spaces available that will be allocated using a ballot process, and participants need to enter via the TMAG website by April 19. Another highlight of the festival will be the return of the Megafauna — TMAG’s much-loved models of giant extinct marsupials, which were part of the permanent galleries in decades gone by and will be on display for a limited time only in the Central Gallery during the festival. For the Festival Finale on April 30, the museum will also be a hive of activity, with lots to do across the whole museum, including facepainting, live music, Reptile Rescue demonstrations, puppet performances and more. The festival is generously supported by the City of Hobart, and members of the TMAG Children’s Reference Panel have once again provided advice and input into the festival program.
