There’s so much to see
ARTS
Clarence City Council
THERE is plenty to learn and do in
Clarence these school holidays,
with local artists Gwen Egg and
Rory Dick sharing their skills.
Gwen Egg is running a workshop
called Fun With Flax, to pass on the
enjoyment of weaving with plants.
Weave a fish, frog, snake or
lizard and other wonderful critters.
Learn ingenious weaving
techniques and make a basket.
Using leaves from the New
Zealand flax plant, participants can
make toys and containers that
don’t come from a shop.
All materials and equipment are
supplied.
The workshop, for children aged
8-12, runs from 10am-1pm on April
21. Tickets are $15, available from
www.clarenceartsandevents.net
Skilled street artist Rory Dick
will run a workshop for nine- to
12-year-olds to learn the art of
cutting detailed stencils and then
applying their own stencils to a
complimentary T-shirt.
Participants are asked to bring
two images, either on their phones
or printed out on A4 paper, that
they would like to use as a basis for
their stencil. Children should also
bring a packed lunch.
The workshop runs from 10am2pm on April 26. Tickets are $15,
available from

Theatre Royal
LOOKING for holiday fun? Then
look no further, because the
Theatre Royal has got you covered
with entertainment for children and
their parents.
The wonderfully entertaining
story of Mr Stink comes to life in a
touching, twisted, hilarious — and
very smelly — tale.
Hold on to your nose as you
follow the loneliest girl in the world
as she makes friends with Mr Stink,
the local tramp.
Based on the book by British
actor and author David Walliams,
this is fun for children aged 6-12.
Follow your nose to the Theatre
Royal on April 18 and April 19.
And for kids who like making
things, using up all materials and
getting into mischief, you mustn’t
miss Loose Ends.
Come to a place where gadgets
are made, machines tamed and
circus tricks pop up when you least
expect them.
This is the story of a man who
thinks he can organise his life in
boxes, and has a knack for getting
into trouble.
Highly visual, unpredictable and
full of inventions and fun — this
show is for children aged 5-12. Bring
your sense of humour — and your
sense of adventure — to the
Theatre Royal from April 27-29.
Shows are at 5.30pm on April 27,
and 2pm on April 28 and 29).

Eastlands
EASTER is almost here and to help
celebrate the spirit, Eastlands will
be holding free Easter craft
workshops these school holidays.
Meet the Easter Bunny and
receive an Easter treat. The Easter
Bunny will be visiting Eastlands
between 11am and 2pm on Tuesday
(April 11) to Saturday (April 15).
Children can meet the Easter Bunny
and receive an early Easter treat.
Children can enter our Easter
colouring competition and go in
the draw to win one of three Easter
hampers valued at $50 each.
Colouring templates can be
collected from the Eastlands
Customer Service Desk or
downloaded from the website
www.eastlandssc.com.au
Children can also come to an
Easter Rabbit Egg Holder Craft
Workshop.
Assemble a wooden rabbit
platform and decorate with adhesive
Easter shapes and markers. These
craft workshops will be held on April
18, 20 and 22 from 10am-2pm.
Children can also create a
unique Easter flowerpots, which
are excellent gifts for friends and
family. Decorate the pots with
markers and then take them home
and plant an Easter flower, or fill
them with Easter eggs.
These craft workshops will be
held on April 19 and April 21 from
10am-2pm.

classics by British playwright Glyn
Robbins, this fun and adventurous
story will be told by a talented cast
of Tasmanian actors including
Andrew Casey, Ellen Roe, Matt
Wilson and David Gilkes.
Director Chris Hamley said the
classic story was a staple of most
people’s childhood.
“The opportunity as a director
to bring these characters to life in
such a beautiful outdoor setting is
very exciting, as is playing the role
of the bouncy favourite, Tigger!” Mr
Hamley said.

can enrol for three or six days. Week
one classes start on April 19, with
week two starting April 26. The
holiday program gives children
lifelong skills while having lots of fun.
The fully qualified teachers use
games and fun activities to develop
a love for swimming. Classes lasting

Huon Jet
HUON Jet has been operating from
The Esplanade at Huonville for
more than 26 years, providing an
exciting jet boat ride on the Huon
River.
The boat zooms from Huonville

boat navigates a number of rapids,
and for a bit of added excitement
executes a series of 360-degree
spins on the river.
Huon Jet operates pedal boat
and aqua bike hire. Canoes are also
available.
A cafe with a balcony over the
river serves light meals.
Huon Jet is open daily, except

EASTER BUNNY
The Doone Kennedy Hobart
Aquatic Centre is running a fun
school holiday program that is an
extension of the popular Swim and
Water Survival School.
This is a wonderful way to get
an introduction to learning to swim
or to consolidate progress made
during the school term.
The centre also offers advanced
classes for students who need to
work on stroke development,
endurance and technique.
THE Collegiate Pool will be
running a Learn to Swim holiday
program for two weeks for all
swimming levels starting on April 18.
The program is open to the
public and makes the most of St
Michael’s Collegiate School’s heated
indoor 25-metre pool in the heart
of Hobart.
Collegiate Pool’s Learn to Swim
program offers clients a safe, quiet
learning environment. Highly
trained instructors provide a
friendly, fun and enjoyable lesson

Oceana Health and Fitness
OCEANA Health and Fitness will
be holding a school holiday
Swimming Intensive Program over
the Easter break.
This program will be running
from April 18-28. You have the
option of two separate four-day
programs, with a discount if you
enrol in both weeks.
The staff at Oceana want your
child to get the best out of their
swimming program, which is why
all of the teachers participate in an
online training module called the
World Wide Swim School designed
and developed by Laurie Lawrence.
This educational and innovative
portal is where the teachers go to
learn new ideas and further their
knowledge.
Following the principles of
Laurie’s training program, which is
based on progressive teaching and
the learning of basic skills, the
teachers are able to make sure
children understand and learn in
the correct sequence of skills.
This includes water
familiarisation, breathe control,
submersion, free floating,
propulsion and safety skills.
They believe mastering these
skills is very important for your child
to become a safe and happy
swimmer.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN
Follow your
animal instinct
THE Tasmanian Museum and
Art Gallery in Hobart will
again be turned over to
younger visitors for the
TMAG Children’s Festival
during the April school
holidays.
This year the festival will
explore all things “animal’’,
with a range of special events,
displays, programs and
activities for and by children
running over five days from
April 26-30.
Visitors will be able to learn
how to draw cartoon animals
and make animal puppets in
special workshops, party at an
animal-themed Kids’ Disco,
meet people who work with
animals every day, and much
more.
The best part is that all
festival activities and events
are free.
A highlight is sure to be the
Festival Artists in Residence,
the Trash Puppets — artists
Jhess Knight and Katie Boon,
who will encourage children to
be creative using recycled and
reusable materials.
Visitors will be able to drop
in to the Puppet Studio to
create their own trash puppets,
write or draw their puppet’s
story to become part of a
storybook, track a Tasmanian
devil puppet through TMAG’s
galleries, and watch a puppet
performance created by
workshop participants.
The performance will be
the culmination of a special
puppet-making, story-writing
and performance workshop,
featuring puppeteers aged 8-12

Other workshops during
the festival will include a
session on cartooning tips and
tricks, as well as one led by
Hobart Hackerspace,
teaching participants how to
make and set up a camera trap
to capture wild animals on film.
These free workshops have
limited spaces available that
will be allocated using a ballot
process, and participants need
to enter via the TMAG website
by April 19.
Another highlight of the
festival will be the return of
the Megafauna — TMAG’s
much-loved models of giant
extinct marsupials, which were
part of the permanent galleries
in decades gone by and will be
on display for a limited time
only in the Central Gallery
during the festival.
For the Festival Finale on
April 30, the museum will also
be a hive of activity, with lots
to do across the whole
museum, including facepainting, live music, Reptile
Rescue demonstrations,
puppet performances and
more.
The festival is generously
supported by the City of
Hobart, and members of the
TMAG Children’s Reference
Panel have once again
provided advice and input into
the festival program.
