Exclusive for KQED Members:
35% Off Select Performances of
SF Ballet’s ‘Frankenstein’
Liam Scarlett, the youngest choreographer ever to have
a full-length ballet commissioned by The Royal Ballet,
helms this darkly beautiful exploration of Mary Shelley’s
Gothic classic. Lowell Liebermann, one of America’s
most frequently recorded living composers, created the
original score. Master designer John Macfarlane brings
us sumptuous costumes. More a love story than a
monster story, Frankenstein is a meditation on what it
means to be human.
San Francisco Ballet is pleased to offer KQED
members 35 percent off tickets* to select
performances of Frankenstein. KQED members
also enjoy a 15 percent discount at The Shop
at SF Ballet — show your KQED MemberCard
at the register.
To purchase Frankenstein discount tickets,
visit sfballet.org/KQED. Enter promotional code
CREATURE when prompted and select one of
the following performances:
Saturday, February 18, 2pm
Tuesday, February 21, 7:30pm
Wednesday, February 22, 7:30pm
Once the promo code is accepted, the ticket prices
shown will reflect your 35 percent discount.
NOTE: Frankenstein deals with mature themes and
subject matter. Not recommended for children under 12.
Don’t delay — this offer expires December 30, 2016,
and is valid only while supplies last.
* This special offer is valid only for the performances listed above and excludes box seats. Online purchases only. Limit two
tickets per member. KQED membership will be verified after purchase and nonmember orders will be declined. Offer subject
to availability and cannot be combined with other offers or applied to previously purchased tickets.

KQED’s Newest Podcast Explores the Bay Area,
One Question at a Time
Join host Olivia Allen-Price, a Bay Area transplant
who’s fallen hard and fast for her new home, to explore the
Bay Area, one question at a time.
Each week Bay Curious will answer questions like:
Why are there so many ships buried under San Francisco?
What is the origin of the word hella? What would it take to
make Lake Merritt swimmable?
If you’re as curious about the Bay as we are, subscribe to the
podcast and participate at BayCurious.org.

If you live anywhere long enough, certain local quirks seem
normal. In the Bay Area, maybe it’s the unusual belted shape
of Sutro Tower. Or the overwhelming noise of a BART train
as it travels underneath the bay. Or the mere existence of
those brightly colored parrots perched above San Francisco’s
Telegraph Hill.
For most of us, these idiosyncrasies and mysteries are
like wallpaper: barely noticed and largely unquestioned. But
what if we stopped to take a closer look?
KQED’s new podcast, Bay Curious, will get to the
bottom of the under-the-radar mysteries and peculiarities
that help give our region its unique identity. And we’ll do
it with your help! You ask the questions. You decide what
Bay Curious investigates. And you come along to discover
the answers.

On June 29, more than 80 media
outlets joined together in an
extraordinary collaboration —the SF
Homeless Project. The idea: one day
of coverage spotlighting the issue of
homelessness in the Bay Area.
KQED and The San Francisco
Chronicle, which organized the
collaboration, each produced more than
a week of coverage. KQED focused
on telling first-person stories to reveal
the huge range of people living on our
streets. We also looked at the issue
from a regional perspective and told
stories of the people living on the edge
of homelessness — facing housing
4
insecurity, living in cars and on couches,
and facing eviction. And we’re proud
to share that the Northern California
Society of Professional Journalists
recently recognized the project with its
2016 Public Service Award.
On Wednesday, December 7, the
collaboration will continue with another
day of coordinated coverage, focusing
on accountability and follow-up. This
time, KQED will tell the stories of
college students choosing to get an
education rather than pay rent because
they can’t afford to do both. Look and
listen for special editions of KQED
Newsroom and The California Report
during the week.
KQED is committed to providing
ongoing coverage of the housing crisis,
to help us all better understand the
problems and explore solutions.

Bay Area Bites Is Your

Taste This host Leslie Sobrocco celebrates the holidays with
a cocktail. Or three!
From the sophisticated Dark and Stormy and Moscow
Mule made at Spoonbar in Healdsburg to a new version
of traditional eggnog created with a San Francisco twist to
her own creations — the Stolen Spice and Sip ’N Pretty
— Leslie will be shakin’ it up this month with the best Bay
Area mixologists and offering plenty of tips and ideas for
amateur forays into bartending.
And lest we forget the pain that comes from
over-indulgence, watch for enlightening and energizing
“cures,” or hair-of-the-dog remedies, for the morning
after your celebration.
Dust off the bottles and shine up your shaker —
toast the 2016 holidays in style.
KQED’s food blog, Bay Area Bites, is preparing a host of
new recipes to inspire you during the December holidays

delicious entrées and desserts.

In the late 19th century, King Ludwig II of Bavaria
created extraordinary and extravagant castles
that were described at the time as “so ridiculous
they are beyond all taste.” Yet today these
stunning palaces are among Germany’s biggest
tourist attractions. Fairytale Castles of King
Ludwig II explores his rich aesthetic — from
the mock medievalism of Neuschwanstein, the
iconic fairytale castle that inspired Walt Disney’s
Sleeping Beauty castle, to the rich baroque
splendor of Herrenchiemsee, Ludwig’s answer
to Versailles.
Fairytale Castles of King Ludwig II airs
Tuesday, December 6, at 8pm on KQED 9.
