Labor Day, the unofficial mark of the end of summer, is usually celebrated with barbecues, sports, road trips, and a long weekend of fun and leisure. Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Today we honor the hard-working citizens of the United States! Labor Day Facts: First Monday of every September. First celebrated Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City where 10,000 workers took unpaid leave to march from City Hall to 9th Avenue. Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a Holiday in 1887. In the 1800s the average work day was 12 hours, seven days a week. Children as young as 5 worked alongside their families in the factories and mills throughout the United States. 1916– Adamson Act was the first law to regulate hours of working in private companies. Labor Day is celebrated by many other countries, not just the US. “No white after Labor Day” is a fashion trend set by upper-class as an end of summer attire. http://www.forbes.com/sites/steveodland/2012/08/29/10-labor-day-facts/#494aed8e6a27 Benefits of adding Spices to your cooking! In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and to help raise funds for research and family support.
